I think most experts agree it is happening. How much of it is natural seems to be in dispute. Very hard to work out due to the complexity of the planets weather systems, and the effect of things in the universe.

Hi

Depends what you really mean by global warming.

Basis theory is true and no way to argue against it. If it wasn't true we would be shivering on a block of ice floating around the sun.

However if you mean man made global warming then it is far more complex. The basic theory is sound, that CO2 (amoung many other gases, CO2 being a fairly poor greenhouse gas) traps energy that is reflected from the earth as heat and causes warming. An increased level of CO2 will by this basic theory increase global temperatures.

However where the theory comes unstuck is all the assumptions made based on it. For example it seems poorly understood how much of an increase causes how much more energy to be retain. If a linear relationship is assumed then you will get very different results than if there is a fairly limited band where CO2 is important (sort of like poison gas, if you have enough poison gas to kill everyone in a room then you do not make them any more dead by increasing the amount).

There is also the major issue of feedback mechanisms. Even assuming that the claimed CO2 warming is accurate it only counts for about 1/3 of the claimed total warming. The rest is due to feedbacks which are even more poorly understood. For example higher temperatures should result in more water vapour in the atmosphere, and water vapour is a far more important greenhouse gas than CO2, hence this is an assumed warming feedback. However that is counteracted by the formation of clouds, which in themselves can have a warming or cooling effect depending on their level but this seems to be poorly understood let alone accounted for.

There is a substantial body of scientists who do not agree with global warming theories. For example the main NASA guy pushing the global warming agenda is James Hanson, but it has recently come out that his recently retired boss is a sceptic.

Even ignoring the evidence and just trying to base a decision on how many scientific supporters each side has is not easy. For example check out this document where someone went to the effort of identifying the names that had been counted twice as contributors to the IPCC report. As the total number is given as a about 4000 who support IPCC supported claims, this knocks that figure down by about 25% (even ignoring claims of whether contributors actually support the conclusions). There are similar errors in the numbers of supporters claimed by the other side.

There is also the issue of whether any warming is happening at all at the moment. It is pretty much acknowledged that the temperature has been stable for the last decade (some claim a small amount of cooling, some claim warming but really depends on whether you base your start point on cooler 1997 or warmer 1998) yet CO2 has continued to increase. Question is whether this stability is due to something counteracting the CO2 based rise, or whether the previous small warming was from something else and not related to CO2.

To summarise, I do believe in the basic idea of possible man made global warming. I do not beleive that current understanding in any way supports current political hysteria about it, nor do I believe we are anywhere close to understanding it. Far too much of the current scare mongering is politically motivated.

All the best

Keith

I just think it's a crock of shit and an excuse to force "green taxes" on people.
There are too many other external forces that effect our weather for us to have any real impact. For one that great big yellow blob in the sky might have some sort of impact on the climate not me tuning my central heating up to 24! Omg think of the polar bears when you boil that full kettle for one cup of tea. Fuck off hippies.
So what cause the last ice age / heating up on the planet? All those T-Rex's chasing it's prey in a BMW X5? Nah dont think so.

I tell you what I don’t believe, I don’t believe the sheer amount of co2 we are pumping into the atmosphere has no effect. How can it not?

I also don’t think there is much disagreement among sensible people that putting as much co2 into the atmosphere as we like is probably not a good idea. It seems very unfair to future generations to just say we can’t prove the overall impact, therefore we should ignore what we do know about what it does.

Well then you're a bloody idiot. Sensible people question what they have been presented with and form their own opinion based on the evidence they have to hand.

Being such a person Wink I have looked at the crap they have attemped to shove down my throat and dismissed it as just that. The crux of the argument is that over a period of around 50 years we have impaced the climate massively by increasing our CO2 emissions from consumption of fossil fuels. What a load of crap.

Firstly, the proportion of total CO2 produced by non 'organic' (yes, I see the paradox) operations is very small when compared with the general increase in biomass (particularly huge human population growth).

Secondly, a time period of 50 years is so short in geological time that it is impossible to use as a reliable piece of evidence/

Thirdly, a point which I like to use a lot. 10,000 years ago (a geological blink of the eye) most of the UK and Europe was under a couple of miles of ice. Clearly we have warmed up since then. That certainly wasn't the result of humans leaving their tellys on standby or going on foreign holidays. Kinda suggests that there are bigger factors at work, don't it.

Those that don't think about it properly believe it, and use it as an excuse to buy a new car/telly/fridge because it is more energy efficient, when in fact doing so has quite the opposite effect.

My recommendation is that people use their brain and think about what they are being spoonfed, rather than jumping on the bandwagon then fucking off to Gap to buy a new pair of ethically produced, carbon offset jeans.

Still nobody has explained why Mars is suffering warming though , must be all those martians in their very well hidden SUVs.

Its hard to tangle any truth in that there are vested interests on both sides , scientists who want research grants , oil companies, governments wanting more control.

From memory the extra CO2 we put out by human activity accounts for about 3% of total CO2 emissions.

By historical levels the current CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is pretty low. For example, from here:-

https://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/dp5/clim7-2.jpg

About 450 million years ago CO2 concentrations were about 10 times higher yet that was during an ice age.

There is aso the issue of whether CO2 increases are a cause or an effect of increased temperature (or both). While CO2 levels are believed to have increased at the end of the last ice age it also appears that the CO2 leves increases started after the temperatures increased.

Is it fair to future generations to destroy countries industries in the hope that not only will this reduce CO2 emissions (rather just just moving them somewhere else) but also that reduced CO2 emissions have the hoped for effect. It is not a case of not being able to prove things, it is more of a case of not even knowing if what is suggested will have any positive or negative impact.

All the best

How do we predict millions of years ago? do we simply base this on the trend when we started accurately recording it and follow it backwards in its given direction?

Up in this case?

Actually I had previously secretly though, `how do we know we are not actually offsetting some disaster, not causing it`. Wasn’t it Maggie Thatcher who started the whole idea for some campaign strategy?

I don’t know if I’d say I don’t believe it after reading some of your stuff. Having to "believe" kind of means you don’t really know and seems like a pointless exercise. I’m certainly going to be more open-minded about it now though. Thumbs Up

The earth's climate is changing yes, but I don't think we are having a noticable effect on it either way.

Badly worded poll, yes I think maybe the climate is changing, not necessarily global warming as you put it, however the climate has always been changing, we have bugger all to do with it, it's just a another good way to keep everyone in check by blaming ourselves.

You look in ice core samples which we once liquid millions of years ago The content of this water tells you a lot about the atmospheric conditions at the time it froze. You can also look in peat bogs, when these were created pollen was trapped into it which provides us with view of the conditions when the bog was formed(ing).

However this records only give us an estimate as we can't reliably plot them year by year like we have done for the past 50 years.

Climate change is happening (although I voted no on the poll) however I very much doubt we (humans) are the sole/main reason for this happening. There are plenty more factors which are neglected. The sun is currently (from what I last read) in an odd state as we are waiting for another sunspot and it has differed from its normal cycle for the past couple of years.

The idea of global warming is a nice concept which people can make (and lose) lots of money, especially when it is overhyped by the media and is used as the explanation for everything changing with in the natural world.

Don’t know exactly what you mean.

`Climate change‘ has killed millions?..... Yes in some way or another, but nature's always changing if we are around or not. It all just goes in cycles.

I think you need to define what you mean by "Global warming". From the last ice age there has been global warming. I guess

Global Warming Policies-

Quote:
March 10, 2009 (EIRNS)—Yesterday, Dr. Arthur Robinson, Director of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine and the originator of the petition against Al Gore's global warming hoax which as of now 32,000 scientists have signed, told the 2nd International Conference on Climate Change, that the people like Al Gore who promote global warming alarmism are committing genocide by the withdrawal of technology from the developing world. Speaking at the conference hosted by the Heartland Institute in New York City, he said, "there is a current example of genocide by the removal of technology, and that is the ban on DDT, and that has resulted in the deaths of 30 to 40 million people and has left half a billion infected with malaria."

https://www.larouchepub.com/pr/2009/090310climate_warming_conf.html

It would seem the policies we will be seeing in the coming years will
do as much harm to society's and populations as a case of man made global warming would its self-its going to Destroy economy's and way of life and in the less developed country's cost many lives.

All ties in with agenda 21 one if my memory is right,i cant stand these people "we have xx to save the earth"..there agenda is transparent...

Some of those pushing it don't even know the order of the planets Laughing..like i said shit useless post was just wondering who at this moment in time is still buying into this lie.

I would say its existence is undeniable but the fact that we as humans have had any hand in it, or can do anything to stop it is very deniable.

fairly certain floods/bad weather/droughts/tidal waves/earthquakes/meteors/volcanoes etc have killed plenty of people before we started using fossil fuels and long after we have moved onto other power sources.

hate it when people are claiming that humans are causing the bad weather, for example when chunks of england was underwater last year people said we caused it yet in the past the uk was under ice so obviously the weather will change from time to time.

every few years theres a new scare, in the 70's there were worries of the world going into an ice age yet that hasnt happend or shows now signs of it happening.

bassically its a way for governments to guilt people into being taxed more and more as its easy to claim its happenings, if it rains too much its global warming, if it doesnt rain its global warming.

It's more likely caused by the 26,000 year cycle of our system passing through the galactic eliptical plane (peaks in december 2012). According to some 'experts', and tied in with the end of the Mayan calendar, this is when the poles might reverse, cataclysms may occur and general other weird stuff might happen (change of biological frequency etc).

The basic solution is to go "I don't give a fuck, get fucked and where can I pick up a cheap 3.5ltr Shogun?"

It's a fucking video-game, and there are more important things to worry about.

What kickstart said Laughing

So much money has been spent and political decisions have been made around the assumption that it is out fault the earths temperature changes.

Yes we produce co2, but the amount is minimal.
Loads of c02 is stored in the sea, so if the temperatures rises a bit, more is released and people assume its the c02 that we pumped out that did this.

Its very complicated and I do not agree with the majority of claims.
Big organisations find it hard to admit they have made a mistake. (reminds me of changeling)
