Lie about what? Your name, your credit card number, who you're travelling with? You'll need all of those to book tickets and the details will then be stored, so unless you've got a spare false identity with it's own credit card and passport and your travel companions have the same then I fail to see how lying will get around this.

Don't take their IDs in the first place. Don't use their shitty airports or anything that requires your passport/ID, let them crash and burn.

Yes, but it also said they wanted your reason for travelling. To be fair the above details are probably already stored on the quiet.

I don't see why the goverment needs to know why I'm going abroad though.

Came back into the country this weekend and the queue for Passport Control was massive, as all details now being cross-checked with databases Shocked

If you have to queue for nearly 25 minutes in a provincial airport, it'll be a nightmare at the big airports - like the International travellers' queues, no more benefit in the EU queue!! Evil or Very Mad

I worked with the Border Force at Heathrow for 6 months last year - I think the longest anyone EVER waited in the EU queue was 25 mins when the entire hall was full and the queue was backed up beyond the entrance ramp. Contrast that with the 'others' queue that sometimes hit 2 or 3 hour waits at busy periods.

The average time for processing an EU passenger is about 10-15 seconds, compared with a couple of minutes for a 'good' overseas arrival.

heh quite usually its the immigration control officers not doing their jobs properly that is the delay , on return from Asia in September last year it took nearly 40 minutes to get to the front of the queue as the women on the counter thought it more important to chat than to do their jobs.

That's sometimes the case, I'm sure.

On the other hand, you have no idea what checks they are waiting on while they are talking - and it's often a ruse to satisfy the officer as to a person's story/likeness/ID/children's welfare, etc. the new British chipped passports are quite literally the slowest in the world - older style passports swipe quicker.

IO's are trained to cover all of that up with polite chat - it's usually ignorant British passengers who don't seem to get it. The same people probably read the Daily Mail on the way home and complain about how many foreigners are sneaking through our porous borders.

You can't have your cake AND eat it.

The border is something to take seriously - unless you're one of these 'without borders' lunatics who don't pay taxes so don't care if the country goes to rack and ruin.

They had special signs up this weekend to explain why there would be delays coming through Control, so fair to say that there was something new or additional to the normal checks.

The actual time through the desk was very quick but there were only 3 desks open as the airport is going through building work and given the space I'm guessing that's all they can fit in at the moment.

I think someone's perspective as an Employee working on Border Control will seem very different to someone who travels through on an almost weekly basis and there is definitely a difference when commuting with regular air travellers and holiday makers. Mind you there is always one arrogant business person tutting thinking they can buck the rules 'do you know who I am?' Rolling Eyes but they're still way less frustrating than the dippy bunch that can't read the signs and faff at security Evil or Very Mad

Still, at least we're denying them the comfort of in-flight meals and a movie.

We had those up when I worked at Heathrow - it was part of the new UKBA branding procedures - "New measures to secure our borders mean that there may be delays at the control....." or words to that effect. They haven't introduced any new checks since I left - it's only been 4 months and I'm still in contact with my mates there. (mostly because they were all stunning asian lasses!)

Yup- someone who works there is there for 35hrs every week, rather than a few minutes!

Or the idiots who are a mix of the two - loudly complaining about the queues but when they get up to the control it turns out they can't find their passport.

Not entirely true, as plenty of dangerous and unpleasant people fly in - but yeah, our sea ports are ludicrously lax.
