Anyone here work in IP CCTV and/or IP Access Control?

Anyone deal with?

My firm is branching into this and I'm looking to get on the training courses, want to know what work is like and prospects etc if possible.

Training course is £2000 for 2 days so I want to make sure I'm 100% interested before we pay that out.

I've been reading up on it and understand most of it so far, seems fairly interesting and the possibilities with IP control is limitless for commercial and even domestic installations.

What's the pay like?

I already work as an electrician and won't be leaving the company, however I do want to specialise and run that side of the business at some point in the future if it's lucrative.

I work for one of the bigger access control companies Audio/Video/Coded/Proximity/Biometric.

We offer free training courses for all our equipment.

Dont deal with IP access control though nor cctv.

You could make a killing installing this sort of stuff. I work in tech support and the people we get calling us (apart from a few) dont really have a clue.

I've thought about doing it myself. Have a electronics degree + knowledge in the field. Just need to get my arse in to gear and sort out my 17th edition.

Are you doing this for the company or are you wanting to go solo ?

If you are deciding to go solo i wouldnt even bother with the training, all you are doing is hooking a camera to the internet which you will find is fairly straight forward once you've read a couple of books.

The camera will more than likely be connected to some sort of custom box which is essentially just a glorified PC.

Obviously the internet connection plays a major role in the process as well, because a slow shitty connection means lower quality (possibly even less frames per second) video feed, although all video will be recorded onto the computer directly linked to the camera.

then you have another choice, either allowing the customer direct connection to the computer connected to the camera to view live feeds or routing the camera through a server you will buy/rent which they can connect to to view the video feed (the latter opens the opportunity to charge monthly fees for access to view the live camera feed and possibly monthly fees for video feed backups in the event of a burglar compromising the "in-store computer" - fear mongering ).

I've dabbled in the past and it's fairly easy as long as you have a basic understanding of TCP/IP and computer networking.

I'll be doing it for the company, not going solo but I do intend to push to take over that side of things if it goes well.

I've done a fair bit of reading and it all seems fairly straightforward.

The training I mentioned is for Milestones software which we intend to be using... they won't let you commision it unless you're "qualified" which comes at £1000 a day 2 day course

This has all come about due to a commerical contract we are doing the electrics on, we've secured the CCTV and access control side as well and need someone to get trained to do the commissioning. Only putting one person from the company in for it, I want that to be me so am trying to learn as much as I can about it all. We have also verbally agreed to do another server house which is high security ip based access control and camera systems. I definetly want to be running that job.

Seems pretty easy.. IP camera, cat5e cabling to a switch... connect up to a normal pc running milestones software and plenty of storage.. then to internet if required for watching the cameras off-site. Most of the "harder" bits comes to siting cameras and bandwidth allowances etc... most of the places we would be working have gigabit networks so it's not a major issue.

As for access control that's all pretty much the same, Power Over Ethernet door mag locks and card readers.. then all the programming is done via computer.

It all sounds a bit tooo easy! Anything I should look out for or read up on now? any tips/advice.

I'm not an expect on networking but I have a home-user knowledge and can learn fairly quick.

if you want, i'll give you access to my server for a little bit and run you through how it works (because i have nothing better to do lmao), regardless of software its always the same process, just in different software you'll need to learn what icon does the thing that the icon on the program you learned on does (if that makes sense, for example a cross hair on the program you were taught in may create new user accounts, where as on another program the icon could be a blank square with a plus sign next to it)
