Taking Your lid off at petrol stations

Im well aware this has been done before but fancied a rant so im sorry in advance !

Pulled into a Shell garage in East Grinstead yesterday, ( quite a nice town not chavy or scumy ) on my 848, with a friend on his 848. So to illustrate the point you have 2 £10k bikes sitting together on the forecourt

Anyway I fill up no problems go into the store and the cashier asks me to take my helmet off, naturally I said no, he then proceded to give me some answer that due to the language barrier made not much sense as he clearly didnt have a fucking clue anyway however the main part I did understand and came out loud and clear was 'for our safety' Hang on a minute I thought, do I look like a fucking criminal, oh wait he's a biker must be a thief/robber/burglar/scumbag

Maybe they should ask every person that pulls up in a rough/chavy looking car wearing tracky b's to pay outside through a glass window and bullet proof glass, but no just bikers, because we obviously all go in there and nut them one and steal the petrol, we could of course just ride away and not bother going in in the first place......

ah fuck it i wont be going there again, one more thing, nice how they wait for you to fill up, go inside get your card out ready to pay before calling you a criminal, bunch of c****

I don't understand that if you are standing there with the money wanting to pay and they say they won't take your money unless you remove your helmet, does that mean you can walk out as they have refused payment?

Tho I don't like getting my lid on and off, in these situations I think it's a lot quicker to do so, than to start arguing.

At some stations 'these are rules', if you don't want to accept them, just go somewhere else. (not trying to be offensive, don't get me wrong)

If they refuse your payment and you have offered you can walk out without paying. They can call the Police (who may attend or may not) but there is nothing they can do - civil debt.

You have offered payment, the offence of Bilking (not paying for petrol) is not to offer payment. If they refuse WTF can you do LOL, unless it's cash you can't force it on the cashier.

The Police may come and try and persuade you but they will know and you can point out that it is a civil debt and they are welcome to take you to court for it .... like they will?

I am in the camp of it just being polite to remove helmet when dealing with someone face to face. And before you mention the Ninja's (burka??) if their religion says that they cant show their face in public then so be it.

I can see why it can be quite intimidating. Under full bike gear a skinny short person can look pretty hefty, plus not being able to see their face properly just makes it more intimidating

For all you know it could be for when open late at night when a little old lady is on the tills and doesnt feel comfortable serving fully kitted up bikers staring at their blacked out visor as they silently type in their pin number and leave. Requesting that bikers remove helmets all the time ensures that the more vunerable staff are less likely to come up against the problem.


And i know this is a largely debated issue, but if you choose to keep your helmet on then fair enough. But if the person serving you would prefer it if you removed the helmet then who is in the right?

You could always just use the serve yourself petrol stations. More and more of them springing up these days.

I was brought up to understand that gentlemen remove their hats when going indoors, it's only polite.

Though most of us don't wear hats anymore, removing your helmet falls into the same category as far as I'm concerned.

I've never been asked to remove my lid.

If I was asked when I entered the shop, I would do. It's not really a big deal although whilst filling up it is more convenient not to have to have to hold the lid too.

I can't see why the cost of your bike makes a difference either

what annoys people more?? taking your lid off when going to pay or being made to pay first at night even when your in a car - ive never understood why im made to do it at all

When I rode my bike in Ireland, I stopped for petrol and had a struggle with some bloke who seemed to want to snatch the nozzle off me (I fought him off in the end).

Sounds stupid now, but I'd never got petrol from anything other than self service pumps.

Psh, Usually fill up at the local texaco because the fuel is alright, and as i have to go there for my work allowance, all the cashiers have me on a first name basis. Always take the helmet off before filling up, through politeness.

On the odd occasion i am stuck for juice in town, i just go to tesco, and pay-at-pump. In this day and age, is that really that hard? No need to take anything bar your gloves off, and as little interaction with the till-monkies as possible.

if they refuse to switch the pump on, the most effective way is to throw the pump on the floor hard and ride off, this creates mild annoyance and will generally make you feel better.

In the situation you had, where you had already filled up causing a scence and an argument would make their life more stressful and would probably make you feel better.

or is this just my outlook ?
