PostPosted: 20:53 - 16 Mar 2009    Post subject: Microchips in our bins from June Reply with quote

South Oxfordshire District Council just made the same list that I had reserved for Reading Borough Evil or Very Mad

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7946208.stm

My quiet countryside hassle free living has just recieved another kick in the nuts, they are introducing chipped wheelie bins and fortnightly collections from June.

Currently we get weekly collections and they just take everything away that you chuck onto the street in a black bag. (The way it should be).

I couldn't give a toss about recycling, since it isnt me causing the waste packaging. Too add insult to injury I got my council tax bill today and its £50 more than it was last year.

I was hoping living where I do that we would be the last to get stuffed with this kind of nazi rubbish collection. Anyone else dealing with microchipped bins?

What is your view?

How would you approach it?

Tempted to either take the rubbish to work in the van weekly and dump it in a skip I haven't paid for, or run it up to the local tip (10 mins away) and introduce a bit more EVAL CARBON OMGZZZ for good measure.

Bunch of scum. Thumbs Down

Governments putting microchips in your wheelie bin? HAHAHA. Sounds like something out of one of dem Sci-Fi films we see on the TV! Next you'll be telling me they'll be implanting our children with microchips from birth! Laughing

Stop spreading this conspiracy nonsense around.

Seems a lot of effort for bins doesn't it-and you are right its not us who"s the cause of waste packaging, the hammer should be coming down on industry to change there ways...weighing your bin and charging you more does not deal with the problem.

Erm Bury and Bolton councils did this about 4 years ago , I told this to Kai's dad who got annoyed, as a result we went (he is retired) he went round and used a screw driver to jimmy most of them out. I remember seeing an enourmous pile in his back yard.

Bury council then spent another £152,000 replacing them , he removed them yet again , Bury council then gave up.

I'd continue to put my paper and card in the paper and card box, my plastic bottles and aerosol cans in the blue bin, take my glass to the bottle bank, my garden waste in the brown bin if I'm not composting it, give my milkbottles back to the milkman, take my waste oil and lumps of metal to the tip every now and then and whatever's left over goes in the rubbish bin. Which is rarely all that full.

Bit of a shitty attitude to have in my opinion.

If you don't like the waste packaging, don't buy the product. Or write in to the company responsible and complain.

Oh, no, you go ahead and make a stand by doing nothing. Nice. Thumbs Up

It used to be sold to China in that giant ships with shipping containers often returned empty to China and thus you could get shipping containers for as little as $200 on the way back. Councils used to fill them with rubbish and ship them to Tsingtao and stick them on a train north near harbin , and empty them onto a gigantic think London sized but even bigger waste tip.

Where a clandestine sort of recycling operation happens where salvagers roam the tip picking out useful items and recycling them.

Several councils were involved in this I believe, and thus recycling is ineffect a sham......

But then scrap costs fell through the floor and China doesn't want them anymore, and as such the government are starting to build incinerators and hiring staff in Bury at least to sort bottles and recycled bin rubbish.

It was announced about midday on news websites, I read when I got home from work, should I have pitched a tent outside the council offices by now? Get real.

And the alternative is what? Not eating, nope don't think that will work. Undressing all your food on the supermarket checkout counter, yup sure that'll go down well.

It's the producers responsibility to reduce the packaging and make that which is necessary easily recyclable, not the end user. If this was about anything but raising revenue that is where a common sense approach would start. All the while they are blowing their own trumpet with 'below inflation' council tax increases.

Since most 'recycling' just ends up in landfill anyway, tell me why I should waste my time doing the job myself, then paying someone for such a priviledge.

How about sharing your view on whether or not you agree with the idea as was originally asked rather than trying to tell me i've got a bad attitude. Of which incidentally, guess what, I don't give a fuck. Mr. Green

Actually that is what they do in Germany , in Hamburg we lived near this place called pfenig mart and they had big recycling bins outside, people would literally stand outside at shelf and remove the excess packaging. The shop would be charged to take it away and the manufacturers were in effect encouraged to produce less of it , pointless things like toothpaste tubes didn't come in boxes, fruit wasn't in plastic boxes it was loose and was put into paper bags..... boy do I miss Hamburg...

Erm my wheelie bin has a 'microchip' in it, I can even get some photo's of it if you really want? (although you will have to wait till I get home from university).

It is a ridiculously thought out idea and will never work. From what I gathered from our local paper, the 'microchips' are nothing more than RFID tags, which when hooked up onto the dust wagon identify the bin and then the wagon weighs it (this is the general waste black bin). However there is no system at all to stop bins getting swapped with neighbors or for other people to dump stuff into your bin while it is at the bottom of the drive waiting to get picked up. If I ever got charged because my general waste bin was over the weight limit I'd challenge them in court and ask them to prove none of the above had occurred.

Hi, welcome to Current Affairs, you must be new around here - that was a severe dose of sarcasm that only the regulars around here would probably understand Wink

How does it take any longer? Extended mental process deciding whether something should be thrown slightly to the left or slightly to the right?

If everything that goes in my recycling boxes went in the bin, I'd have to empty the bin more. Which would take longer (and is more unpleasant).

The thing about that is, since we've lost the innocent until proven guilty/onus of proof is on the Police/Authorities; that won't work.

You'll probably find yourself with a letter from the council detailing a fixed charge notice. Since the councils already have special access to civil courts (country courts in the south, small claims in the north.) Essentially, they get a ruling in their favour by default.

The point is, you will have done nothing wrong, some pikey's dumped an engine block in your bin but you have to do all the work proving it wasn't you as opposed to how it used to be when they had to prove it.

Even if you remain silent, you're still liable so that one's out the window, but then its not a criminal court issue, its a civil one so you don't get that right anyway... And of course, its not a fine; its a penalty charge.

This is just a foot in the door for ID cards as most of you will know. First airport workers, then wheelie bins... Its a slippery slope, you know who's next... I wonder if the wheelie bin tags are compatible with the border control database... I hope so, because those evil terrorists might spot another way into the country to wreak havoc! Wink

Thumbs Up

Its a matter of principle,

a ZX10R costs £8950 OTR

a 2008 CBR600RR costs £7503 OTR

For that extra £1447 , you get at least 60bhp more, a stiffer frame , stuffer suspension and all sorts of betterness than a CBR600RR. Ie the extra £££ gives a tangible benefit.

The council keep adding 4% each year to the council tax bills , and yet the services they provide appear to be getting tangibly worse, ie bins used to be collected weekly now every 2 weeks.

Its not right that the price of something increases and the quality goes down. Ie when chocolate bars get smaller and the price goes up its not on.

While I can choose to buy the ZX10R or the CBR600RR or the bigger or smaller chocolate bar, the council has an absolute monopoly on the tangible services provided ie the bins in this case.

Next door has a private company come collect his waste, and yet he isn't exempted from the council tax of waste disposal.

And thus the councils are ineffect abusing their monopoly positions.

Really? Some of our services are improving, such as the overhaul of the local tip which is now open longer hours and is better designed for public use. Our bins are still collected weekly, it's just alternated between waste bins and recycling bins. Council tax always goes up, it's one of life's constants. The cost of things the council pays for goes up, so the council tax goes up. The world turns and life goes on. How would *you* run a council?

Finally, I fail to see the logic behind not recycling just as a matter of principle. Sure, some of it's probably just being shipped to China so some arbitrary quota gets met. But some of it will actually be recycled and what's so uncool about saving a little bit of waste? For virtually zero effort you can do something vaguely useful. Even if you forget the earth-hugging for a moment - I like that my rubbish isn't all in one stinking mess, cos when I need a bit of ceral box to make a gasket, I can find one in the recycling box. When I need a jamjar, there's one in the glass box. There's an almost unending supply of plastic bottles sitting around just ripe for filling with old oil or hacking up to protect my plants. And my compost bin (usefully made from a stack of cooked 010s and Supercorsas) converts more of the potentially stinky crap into lovely soil which'll hopefully keep me supplied with carrots and onions through the summer.

*shrugs*

I don't have any recycling bins, therefore I don't recycle. I fail to see how a weekly collection that alternates between waste and recycling is as good as a weekly waste collection, all food scraps and other stuff that really starts to hum goes into your general waste so it's left festering for 2 weeks at a time, nice.

We have a green waste bin that was provided a couple of years ago, general waste is collected weekly and they take all the black sacks you leave outside, way it should be.

I agree with Goose's sentiments on it being the manufacturers responsibility to sort out the packaging. Over the years so much has gone from paper packing to plastic all because it provides a sealed environment or foil packed freshness etc yet it creates huge waste that won't break down. As Itchy said, toothpaste comes in a useless box, fruit in plastic trays with polystyrene bases it's all totally unnecessary, and if you actually read a lot of plastic packaging most of it says it can't be recycled.

Food waste should go in the "compost-able" green bin Tut Tut Edit: May I add un-cooked food!

Once we got use to the new bin system it works quite nicely, we have a big green compost bin (which also does card-board), slimmer blue paper bin, glass and cans box, and a big grey general waste bin. There is a bit of an odd cycle with the bins though. Still it works out nicely and we don't have stinking bins often.

Although with the new bins they where a bit funny about collecting the wheelie bins when the lids are slightly open and can be picky about picking up bags next to the bins. Neutral

I'm in the middle of nowhere and until this year had no recycling facility from the door, but there has always been the option to take it to the depots dotted about at supermarkets etc. I now have a weekly black bag collection and a fortnightly recycle bin collection but that's only for plastic, tins and glass. I take all my garden refuse directly to the tip as I'm a bit anti compost heaps as in my experience they attract rats (but that's just me). My CT is astronomical, always has been always will be, but that's because of where I live!

I could be wrong but I find that it's all the very convenient stuff that has the most packaging, so if you buy the cheaper or loose stuff it tends not to have all the fancy packing. Maybe you can choose your shopping with this in mind and that would certainly make the manufacturers think, as their sales would be affected. Maybe we all need to think about how much waste food we are discarding - you've paid good money to throw food away? You're way richer than me! My toothpaste is in a glass jar that goes back to where I bought it, to be cleaned and refilled - it's all in the DOING, guys!

I do my bit because it makes sense given limited space and a rising population (not my fault!!) not because I'm a subscriber to the Global Warming School of thought. All very thought provoking!

The news reports make me laugh, its as if 'we' invented the plastic bag, or carry on polluting because we don't give a shit. It's not our fault, give us the choices, and don't fucking charge for it.
My rubbish goes in other people bins, the only thing i recycle is glass. Thumbs Up

They introduced wheelie bins here a couple of years ago, but it was a half-arsed implementation. In my road the houses are "integral linked", so they are in blocks of three. Only the people on the end of each block have access to their rear gardens, so if you are in the middle (like me) you would have to keep the bins in the front garden. The road level is higher than the front of the house, so you would have to wheel your bin up steps, or leave it on the path all week, neither of which are acceptable.

The council's answer to this? We get a black bag collection weekly, as well as the wheelie bin collection. In their infinite wisdom though, they can't use the same carts to pick it up, due to health and safety, so we get two dust carts and two crews coming round.

If they tried to implement chipped bins here, then any excess rubbish would simply be put in black bags next to the bin.

I have to admit...

Thinking about chips (of the silicon variety) in bins seems more and more asanine. Other than charging for over weight bins which is impractical at best and a tax on families at worst; what is the point?

Presumably all they'll have is a unique tag that the lorry will be able to sense... If its over weight, surely they can't issue fines on that basis. Also, how do they set out what is or isn't overweight?

Is there going to be a garbage trading system put into operation?

You can get a fridge that'll read barcodes and reorder food as you use it automatically over the net, maybe if one can't afford a fridge, one could plump for the cheaper option of a wifi wheelie bin.

Be careful, if you get a job lot of agregate and some hookey monoblock dumped in your drive way, you'll know those gypo's have been round...

Thumbs Up

Laughing Laughing Laughing

They can do anything they want. And you'll cough up. And as to what's overweight? Whatever number they make up. Get used to it.

If you really want to know where RFID will go in the future (10-25 years?) You'll go to the shop and take your shopping (all RFID tagged) . You'll wheel it out and it'll all be scanned. The total cost will be deducted from your bank account, no cash, no cards, via your personal RFID tag. The weight of the items and packaging will be noted on your personal database (makes instant purchase and waste taxes so easy), as will what items you purchase (protecting us from terrorists and home made bombs). When it comes to empty your bin, your bin will be scanned, and all packaging item tags within, which will have an acceptable weight accounted for on the database. If the totals don't match, instant fine for unauthorised waste. Put the wrong packaging in the wrong bin? (the scanned tag will flag if it should be in that one). Another fine. The penalty for removing RFID tags will be something ludicrous for aiding terrorists. You don't think all this is possible in the future state of cheap electronic surveilance and database storage of everything?

Go back to 1984 and look at all the things that have changed in the time since. Things aren't going to get any better. The public is dumber than ever in their bleating support for the intrusive police state.
