Ok so i recently bought a divvy. and im pig sick of it. It slow, dull, vibrates and rattles, so im after something more beefy.

It WILL be restricted, but i would like it to atleast have a sports orientated engine (By which i mean a bandit, Fazer, Hornet etc).

I dont care on it's mileage, but im looking at an absolute maximum of 1700 quid which will have to include restriction.

Insurance would have to come back cheaper than the Divvy600s at £330 TPO.

Im CONSIDERING a bandit 12, but i doubt it will take lightly to restriction. But i can insure a naked one for just £125.

Id rather stray away from the fazer as my mate just bought one and i dont wanna have the same bike Very Happy

Oh one more thing, the divvy doesnt cope with pillions well at all. I need a bike capable of accelerating with about 20 stone of weight on it Razz

Suggest!

I know a few divvy riders that can get good performance out their machines (albeit non restricted), you sure you don't have an underlying problem?

An older speed triple

abit more than 1700,

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRIUMPH-T509-SPEED-TRIPLE-1997-NEW-MOT-TAXED-33-0000_W0QQitemZ300301339270QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycles?hash=item300301339270&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318

But in good nick, I would have on of these over a bandit anyday, engine from the Daytona, if your limit is 1700 and you want something vaguely sports bikey the hornet ould be a good bet

Here is a Hornet for £1700

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-CB600-HORNET-CB600S-CB-600_W0QQitemZ120391444702QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycles?hash=item120391444702&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318

I could handle Pillions on my Speed Four but at the same time 33bhp is not a brilliant way to take pillions, if you are going to restrict it I doubt there will be much performance increase if you are restricting it.

Get a hornet 250 Thumbs Up

Keeps up with my mates bandit fine and we both seem to have the same top speed. One went cheaply on ebay the other day. I think it is insurance group 8, and it is geared for just over 33bhp so it still revs and performs as it should.

33bhp is 33bhp right?

Would the engine make that much difference (in terms of mid sized inline 4s)? Maybe look for something a little more lightweight to make the power deficit less noticeable?

I still don't fully understand the power craze for need of 'fun' in a bike. All of mine are 'fun' in their own way, from the 10bhp 125 to the 110bhp 600. I guess it's what you want out of a bike, or how you use it that counts.

Here's the thing, i like the sheer acceleration of sports bikes, and ive ridden a good few, including owned 3 400cc sports bikes which i adored.

But they dont offer what im after.

The divvy doesnt have the acceleration im after, its overtakes are seriously slow and dangerous if planned even slightly wrong.

I dont care about top speed at all.

The divvy is VERY soft, i need a bit more aggression in a bike.

It will nto carry a pillion restricted, i had hell on getting upto speed and maintaining anything about 65 wasnt an option with my 9 stone and my mates 12.

The fazer provided all of the above even restricted.

Its not just brute force im after but id like it. Smile

I REALLY like the x11 though!

My 400 was loads of fun. I could scream around more on that than I can on my 1300. I miss my 400.

Horses for courses and all that.

33bhp is 33bhp. I would rather ride a 33bhp Diversion than R1 or Fireblade.

I'd expect that most bikes you are considering will perform a little worse than a diversion in decent nick at 33hp; they are likely to have higher gearing, meaning they'll make relatively less use of the available power.

They are for different purposes, a divvy is a simple air cooled commuter while a bandit is derived from a sports bike engine , its also liquid cooled so more power is possible. Its like comparing apples to oranges, a fair test would be a fazer 400 or a hornet 400.

Confused

Surely the pain in the arse SV is going to take having half its power taken away better than the bigger bikes. The X11's are gorgeous but how come you can insure the bandit 12 so cheaply? Are you an older rider on an A2 test, I thought younger riders wouldnt be able to get insurance so cheap!!

I remember my first go on a bike was on the back of a restricted 400 VFR and it was pushing a ton 2 up so I dont think you should have too much toruble even with the littler bikes.

If you're going to stick with 33bhp, go for a natural 33bhp bike. Any restricted bike is going to feel like it. A few will do the same trick as a diesel car of promising lots of power low down, then running out of puff in no time.

There's a fair chance you got fooled by this on a test ride. On a test ride I rarely really open it up and push hard, I get to know the bike for a few days first.

Off the top of my head - suzuki goose 350, honda srx400, cagiva river 500 or 600, assorted single cylinder trailies. In fact, probably half the middleweight single cylinder bikes would come out at 33bhp or less on a dyno. A lot of them have staid commuter looks, but bugger all weight and therefore pin sharp handling. You'd be surprised how good a single disc with a brembo caliper is when it's only stopping ~140kg with a reasonable wheelbase.

Restricting a bandit 12 to 33bhp is as bad as putting a bodykit on a corsa.

A lot of the big naked bikes (twins/triples) have much better acceleration (0-80 anyway) than a sports bike! Thumbs Up

I disagree.

Remember in some bike magazine the fastest 0-60 bike they had was a ZX6R for all the bikes they tested that year. Suspect 0-100 was the GSXR1000 of the time.

There's something wrong with your bike by the sounds of it mate. 125cc bikes can go two up and do 60mph all day long!

I'd like to see that article! - I suspect the P to W ratio has a bit to do with it plus also the weight of the rider!

OK, I will amend that (until proved otherwise) and say that generally a torquier bike will be much better lower down (on the road) for day to day use. Your 'average' rider will accelerate to 60 faster than they would on a 'four' sportsbike, but to be honest the differences in 'acceleration' are very little over a lot of bikes but the 'perception' and 'ease of acceleration', I believe, is a lot more on a torquey bike!
