ZXR400 L. As late as you can afford. All other 400 cc bikes are pointless. Parts are plentiful, they handle superbly, are comfy even for a lanky sod like me, easy to work on and downright fun.

Depends how much you have to spend really.

I'm finding my vfr400 just that little bit too small. Great bikes though, lovely engines. I think a newer zxr400 would be more satisfying to ride quickly though.

as mentioned the newer the better. Spares etc. . . do become a problem.

Care to elaborate?

NC29 and NC30 parts are 2 a penny on ebay. Even for the early models.
And even if you cant pick them up second hand. Dave Silver spares are still selling genuine Honda parts for all the early 400s.

Had this misfortune to work on both, yes the parts are available but tend to be pricey in comparison.

ZXR's are unreliable compared to most other sports 400's (other than the FZR's which sometimes snap conrods). Appetite for head gaskets, camchains / tensioners and valve collets. Same as most other kawa's of said era but compounded by the high rev limit and utter abuse they get.

Again that is on the earlier ones ( pre L4), mine had one camchain and tensioner in 70,000 miles due to being worn out and nothing else.

Youngest brothers is 19 years old and on its origional headgasket camchain and tensioner, as is my sister in laws L model which is 6 years old.

CBR400 and Bros 400 are two of the most fun bikes I've had, both reliable too. Any reason why you want a 400 though? Not many advantages over the much wider range of 600s available, even insurance wise is there? I love 400s but I went for a 600 now as it just made more sense.

fuck me binge is quite hot, always thought binge was a dude

anyway i have not found any trouble finding parts for my NC35 and have only had one or two problems with it, bassically crappy spark plugs and the original pipes have joints that rot fairly easily.

well apart from the V4's get very very hot while riding so bassically wearing shorts is not really a possibility.

Brilliant! Laughing
Its Roxanne. I was teaching her to ride the NC29 that day.

Anyway, Back to OP. If you are over 5`10 and want a 400. Get a ZXR400 as they are pretty much the same size as the ZXR750 iirc.

If you are 5`10 or under. And dont fancy the ZXR. Then I'd go for an NC29 (CBR400).

The NC30 (VFR400) is over rated in my opinion. I've owned 2 NC29s and an NC30.
Roll on response on the VFR was shocking. Really sluggish. Once it was moving it was alright. But nothing like an IL4 screamer.

The NC35 (RVF400) is another over rated bike IMO. Cool forks. Thats about it. They don't even look that nice I don't think. And far too pricey. If you are going for a 400 because they are cheap. And choose an NC35. You may as well have just got a 600 to start with.

Gixxer 400s are nice. But parts are few and far between. Bloody quick bikes thought.

The FZR400 (Yamaha), doesn't appeal to me one bit. Dont know why. Just doesnt.
I've only ever seen one in real life. And the owner had BODGED R1 plastics on it.

Ben
