Hey all i have fallen in love with the tl1000 after looking at many bikes, plus the insurance is really cheap, and the bikes are really resonable, what is there to look out for in them, would prefer the r to the s but not fussed, any help much appriciated

Early S models are prone for frame cracking, so try to aviod those.

The rear rotary shock on the R is pretty crap on the R, you may not be rossi on the roads but it makes the bike feel wallowy and a bit loose, hense why alot of them have aftermarket shocks, this is a good thing.

They dont feel as big and heavy to ride as they look, i found mine handled very well, although it did have Ohlins front and rear.

I picked up my 1999 TLR for £2500 with Ohlins front and rear and damper as well as a full Yoshimura system.
Sold it for that aswell.

yes mate they are awsome bikes for the money, i have found aload of them i like, i do prefer the r anyway due to it being fully faired as i like this, my mate had one and said it was too much for him as he was only 9 stone where as im a more bulky 12 stone so shouldnt be a problem, i prefer bigger bikes as well, considering im only 5ft 8, problem is i really want to test ride one but cant find any dealers local to me who have one and my mates sold his now so no luck there, i also love the v-twin with having the sv650s before and although this wasnt the fastest bike in the world i really enjoyed it.

There are a couple of nice later r's going for around what you paid for, i even found a 52 plate for 2k at moment, im only 22 with 2 years no claims and insurance is only 193 a year tpft, against a older blade which is 350 a year tpft!!

i had one briefly. fookin loved it. Sounded like thunder and went really well. really comfy for a sportsbike and hell of a good fun ride.

If i got one with the whole sportsbike riding position n stuff i would have kept it. But i prefer me proper handlebars.

Get one bought, and ditch the shitty rear shock ASAP if its the standard one. They are cack and make the bike feel heavier than they really are

I have an S. It'll make your SV feel like a toy.

The rear shock is not as bad as people make out, the worst part of it being the fact its near impossible to adjust, as the compression and rebound adjusters are part obscured by the frame, and the preload adjuster can only be adjusted a tiny amount using a hammer and drift

I've replaced the spring on a stick and rotary damper with a bitubo race shock now (its better than the other designs in the fact that its a conventional unit. No seperate spring/damper), and the difference is night and day. The rear end is supple without the squatting, and fidgeting. The back end keeps working over bumps and drops without getting constipated like the standard setup, and balances out the hard front end. If anything it shows up the front, so that'll be new fork internals next. Handles very well anyways.

The frame cracking isnt a big deal; the top damper mount went on mine, due to the bottom bolt working loose and putting extra stress through the top one, however I had the option of either getting it welded up or replacing with the bitubo.
I'm sure a skilled welder could have added reinforcement, and made a better job of it than suzuki did.

Its quite a compact bike too, besides the bulky tank. I'm 6ft 1 apparently, and it looks a bit on the small side in this pic...

A very long time ago when i went up to Maxton to pick up the forks for the 400 they had a TL rear damping unit mounted on the doors as a closing mechanism,a suspension technicians joke,i found it funny.
