Ignoring the whys and wherefores of the OP, this guy does seem like a bit of a self righteous prick.

The 'raghead' comments of fellow captains probably stem from them being ex-RAF, where the term is bandied about referring to them as the enemy.

I see that he defended Labour's economic record in the BA magazine, which started the whole thing. Firstly, he's got to be a bit of a spanner for defending it, and secondly he has to have a fairly high opinion of himself to then put it down on paper and submit it for (potential) publication. He's not coming across as a top guy IMO.

I question the assertion of racism also - since he is apparently trying to define Scotland as a race. I would suggest that it is not a race - his 'race' is white, Western European, it's just a region within. Could a Geordie or a Scouser also sue for racism if it was asserted that they were stupid coal miners or thieves, respectively.

He's just pissed off that someone doesn't agree with him, which his ego can't take, and cannot take any ribbing, again due to an inflated ego. Typical pilot.

As an aside, on the whole 'racsim' thing, why is it wrong to have an opinion regarding the character traits of a particular race or nationality of people? From living here in Aus, I have been exposed to a large number of Chinese people. I generally find their attitude to life, their priorities, their social etiquette, their general selfishness distasteful and completely at odds with my own beliefs. Clearly they are not all like this, just 80%. So why is it unacceptable for me to express this opinion, based on my experience?

Similar things could be said about all different races/groups of society, yet any adverse opinion about a section of society is unacceptable. Seems crazy to me - it's like saying that everyone is exactly the same, which is total bullshit.

So the pilot was harrassed over a long period of time, being sent abusive letters etc. He complained to his bosses who decided to ignore it.

How can you critisise the guy for taking it to a tribunal? He followed his company procedures and was obviously let down?

As for the OP, obviously a closet bigot who doesn't want to use his real login, was just waiting to post this crap.

If he is a noob then he seems to be the sort that the world could do without Rolling Eyes

Sadly (for you) the law disagrees:

Quote:
According to British law, racial group means "any group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin".[4]

It's a fairly common-sense definition that most people would identify with.

With reference to the article in the OP - The Daily Mail seems to be deliberately obscuring the nitty-gritty of the incident. To me, the worst bits are the alleged 'raghead' references and the inadvertent but unacceptable insult provided to the pilot's wife that was clearly grounded in prejudice.

The comment about Scotland being a welfare state funded by England is exaggerated and obviously meant to offend - but it's not a million miles away from the truth!

There are many laws, as you must be aware, that are badly thought out, and thus are wrong in the eyes of the people.
In fact, many 'laws' are themselves illegal under Common Law, so please, don't start spouting 'laws' as if that is proof of being right.

The 'race laws' are a charter for chancers.

They tend to be implemented as such in many cases, I'll be the first to agree.

That said, if there is to be legislation in this regard - and I'm quite content for there to be - the definition as listed above seems common sense to me.

Quote:

I'm not quite sure what you intend that to mean.

Common law is merely a matter of precedent and accepted practise, based on hundreds of years of oft-bizarre decisions by judges. Statute law tends to overrule Common law, as it's something that's actually been considered.

Common Law doesn't make anything illegal, as it doesn't really exist in the manner you seem to be describing.

As far as I'm concerned, race hate/religious hate laws are totally unnecessary.
If I hit someone, it doesn't matter why I hit them, the fact is, I hit them, and thus should be prosecuted for it.
We've always had adequate legislation to cover that.

Having these additional 'hate' laws, only encourages people of a certain mindset* to go winging to the courts, "because the nasty man called me names", in the hope of a nice payout. Usually at the taxpayers expense.

The Jock mentioned in the OP, is a classic case and should grow a fucking backbone, instead of blubbing that he's been 'racially abused'.

*I believe that the majority of people, have too much self-respect to go squealing to the courts every time someone insults them/takes the piss.

It sounds like he quite rightly tried to deal with the matter via his company's grievance procedures, and then when that failed went to the employment tribunal. I fail to see the problem with that, perhaps you could explain to me why someone should sit there and listen to other expound their racist views - some of which directly affect him as he has an asian wife?

I'm not really sure why I'm trying to argue the toss over this with someone I believe to be an apologist for racist groups/people, but it's a slow evening.

Hmmm, you may have a point there:

Quote:
Brand made a joke following the leaking of details of almost 13,000 BNP members last November.

She commented that as a result of the list becoming public knowledge on the internet, she now knew the addresses where to send the 'poo' through the post

Her routine was a hit with the live audience, who laughed and cheered at her remarks.

However, the joke, which was broadcast on the late-night BBC1 show from Hammersmith Apollo on January 16, offended members of the BNP.

The following day, Simon Darby, the BNP's deputy leader, made an official complaint to Hammersmith police alleging that Brand's comment had been an act of incitement to cause racial harassment.

Oh the poor love. Like I said, he should be a man and grow a backbone, the spineless twat, instead of using the race card as a get-rich-quick scheme.

As someone who's never been a BNP member, or a member of any political party, that has what, to do with me?

As a bystander, I would say that besides being a less than childish 'joke', outside of a few lefty comrades and some diesel dykes, who the fuck finds fatso Brand funny at the best of times?

The second bit I would guess, is the BNP attempting to use the 'race laws' against the very twats who helped instigate it.
Can't blame them for that.

Scotland will only be allowed by the UK to gain real independance when North Sea oil runs out and it has nothing left to contribute. UK is a major player in OPEC because of the oil reserves but an independant Scotland would control the oil.
Scotland also exports water and electricity to England among other things.
It is a convenient myth that Scotland is funded by England. The figures are there to be manipulated by any party that cares to do so to drum up a bit of political capital and they do regularly.

It is a convenient myth that the oil is mostly in Scottish waters. Normal borders would continue into the sea in line with the land borders, which would put much of the oil into English waters. But as both England and Scotland are both part of the UK there has never been any point in dealing with the issue.

All the best

Keith

I think oil is moot now. Fine when the prices are high and it is cost effective to extract, but I don't think it can be relied upon these days.

This is one of the things about independance that irritates. English folk see it as a slight on them but it isn't. Why can't both countries have their independance but work together as equals? There seems to be a lot of ire generated by free care for the elderly, free university (it isn't) and free prescriptions (they aren't yet.) Its not being paid for by English middleclasses, its being paid for by reshuffling what we get back via the Barnett Formula. If you insist; think of it as England paying back the oil revenues they 'borrowed' in the 70's and 80's. Wink

Personally I have no strong views either way, I tend to rise above the English view that we're all buckfast -swilling freeloaders up this way and that you're all arrogant tosspots down your end.

At the end of the day, we're just people trying to rub along. Something tells me if the labour government didn't need Scottish MP's there would be less opposition to further devolution.

I've read the Daily Mail report and to me it all seems a bit meh. Also, its the Daily Mail, so the juicy morsels will have been cherry picked for maximum titilation. (I could say the Pilot should've just given as good as he got, its not like there isn't any ammo. Wink )

Thumbs Up
