My Dog has a Cut on His Leg

Hi, my dogs went into kennels whilst I was away. Picked them up, and one of my dogs has quite a sizable cut (see images). He seems to lick it a lot (keeping it clean).

Is there anything I should do? Anything I shouldn't? Worth taking him to a vet?

Get him to a vet, no saying what he might have picked up from there. Might be a bite, cut on metal or anything. Looks quite a clean cut though.

Plus if you watch the vet dressing it, then you can do his future dressings.

What did the kennels have to say about it?

I in the past have applied antiseptic cream, a light bandage and modified tube-e-grip.
Kept a close eye on my dogs mood looking for signs of stress and checking the gums are nice n pink. Checking dressings and wound.
Any signs of infection and off to the robbers..err i meant vets Rolling Eyes

It is healing, but it is also inflammed and granulating.

The dog licking it is stopping it from healing properly. If this continues he will land up with an Acral Lick Granuloma. They are a MAJOR pain in the arse to sort out.

He wants it cleaning up, probably some antibiotics (either ointment or systemic ones) and critically, he needs to be stopped from licking it either by means of an Elizabethan collar or a bandage.

He is probably licking it a lot because he is bored. If it becomes a habit, it is very difficult to break it.

That looks like it might be a burst abcess, my cats just had one and needed antibiotics. I would get him checked at the vets.

Thanks for the help all.

I'm going to try some anti-septic cream on it with a bandage to prevent him licking it. It doesn't seem to hurt him, he just seems to find it overly interesting. Rolling Eyes

If it doesn't look much better by the end of the weekend, I'll take him to the vets. Thumbs Up

If my dog had come back from the kennels with a belter like that on his leg I would be very interested as to how it had happened and if they'd had anyone out to look at it.

Im just looking at my dog and thinking about him getting sweat rash between his toes and how much he'd savage me while I was putting cotton wool in between his toes!

I would go ro the vets, they will give him a proper good dressing and keep a good eye on it.
Try your hardest to stop him licking/scratching. Because when it starts healing proplerly it will get itchy for him.
