Just had to post about my rather crap morning and what happened to my lovely Bandit.

Wheeled my bike out of the side gate, got it onto the road and put the sidestand down (so I thought). Started her up, turned to close the gate, the next thing I hear is an almighty crash.

I turn around to see the bike on its side, would really have loved to have seen the expression on my face.

Two smashed indicators, knob on the end of the gear lever snapped off and scratching on the fairing front and rear.

Bugger. My own fault, didn't check the stand properly. Had to pay 17 quid for a taxi to work. I am surprisingly Ok about it really.

Phoned up my local mechanic to see if he could get me some new indicators really quickly as I really need to bike next week, he couldn't, but he did say I could come and rummage in his box of assorted old indicators and have any that may fit for a fiver, which I thought was very nice of him. Might tide me over till I can get on e-bay.

What a tit, but thats life........ Embarassed

Anyone know how to make scratches on plastic look less crap?

Just replace the whole panel , in that the only real way to undo scratches is to sand the whole panel down put some primer on it and respray.

T cut and such like still leaves visible scratches

To be fair, you chose to spend £17 - it sounds like the bike was perfectly ridable Smile.
I've regularly ridden bikes with no indicators for long periods in the past.

Scratches give people the suggestion that you might 'use' your bike more than have it as a mantle-piece-piece Smile. Sure, some people will look down on you a bit more, but others will look down on you less Smile.

Yup wear your battle scars with pride.... a few scratches is NOTHING, as said (yet again I hear those groans) I rode my CBR home with a snapped swing arm.

Doh!

I once did this on the NC29. But It was alot more embarrassing.

Pulled up to a petrol pump, Opened fuel cap, Filled up with fuel (Tanked it). Cap back on, Nozzle back on pump.

Lean bike to left onto the stand. Which wasn't actually down. Rolling Eyes

It had already gone past recovery stage at this point. So I just had to gracefully fall over with the bike.

Felt like a right CUNT.

Yeah G, perhaps I was just being a bit of a pussy there, think I was in a bit of shock TBH!

If I can't get hold of any indicators, I'll just ride it. Is the law ok on that?

Yep, pretty sure anyway. Plenty of road legal bikes don't have or come with indicators.
When they were going over my zx9 with a fine tooth comb (trying to do my for having dodgy tyres, though they were road-legal race tyres, etc) they didn't care about no indicators.

My mate got pulled up on his Pit bike the other day. And A traffic cop tried to do him for the indicators.

Its a bit of a gray area really. I've heard different things.

As far as I know. If they are there, They must work. If they are not there, Then it doesn't matter.
However, an MOTer will get funny if there's a switch to operate the indicators. But no indicator lights.

You'll get away with having no indicators for a while, If you intend to keep it that way. Make sure you remove or tape up the switch. And completely remove all 4 indicators from the bike.

I've ridden plenty of bikes with switch and no indicators with no problems (the zx9 being an example). It may well depend on a cop in a bad mood - but then they may just make something up anyway Rolling Eyes.
I can't see it being a problem if it's obviously been recently broken.

If it's only for a short while, just be cautious and honest. If you get pulled, just tell them;

"I dropped it this morning and needed to get to work!"

I've done similarly stupid things. Got off my 125 without the stan down, bending the gear lever to the point it was fouling the sidestan bolt, leaving my stranded whilst i waited for th AA. Got fed up of waiting so got a spanner out my tool kit and wedged it between the lever and frame and bent it outwards enough to make it rideable.

After throwing my bike own the road coming back from work, I was working on it in my garden. Had finished removing all the fairings, and had just put my one good crash bung back on, on the LH side (exhaust stops the RH side engine cover touching the floor), so that i could ride th bike naked. Lucky i did put the R&G on that side, because i dropped it on the bloody floor! Little cratch on the engine case still, but nvm, shit happens.

Get her fixed up and enjoy riding!

You could buy new indicators and fit them yourself easily - two wires and a bolt each. Ditto on riding the bike I have ridden my bike home with a broken-off footrest, busted gearchange lever, broken throttle cable, broken clutch cable and various other small things.

You haven't seen the state of my bike, battered and bashed, well loved and still takes me on very long rides.
Just get on it and ride regardless of the scratches.

I'll raise you broken footpeg and both brake levers broken Razz (using the kill switch to brake, something you need to be careful with when idle is at 1/3rd revs!) To be fair, that's just been in the race paddock, though, so most I've done is about a mile, maybe.

Had a very similar experience, only at the pump right next to me there was a car full of lads. The walk to pay for the petrol and back felt like a million miles Laughing

Yay! Fixed it.

Went to my local place (motorcycle trade-ins, excellent guys). They had a massive box of assorted indicators, found two and have just fitted them. £10. Work fine.

To be honest, I didn't really want to ride the bike like it was. There are so many ped boi types at my school and I didn't really want to send the message that it is OK to ride round with half your indicators gone....

AND I was already running late and didn't have the time to check if there was more serious damage, so I just took the easy route and got a taxi.

I think I am resigned to the fact that I am a bit clumsy with the bike and that it's not the last time I will do something stupid like that. Mint bikes are not for me, I can't be trusted! As lomg as it works and I can go fast, I'm happy...

Anyway, thanks for the replies. Time to write 41 reports Rolling Eyes

Bikes used for work never stay mint condition. If your using it as a workhorse then regard it as one to save disappointment.
