What do you guys consider to be the greatest games console of all time, and why.

If the console is not in the poll please fill us in, I am 20 I am garanteed to have missed something.

I have included broadly known consoles.

Handheld consoles do not count here.

My vote lies with the Sony Playstation, no other console has such a broad selection of games for the time, neither has any other console provided gameplay, graphics, good sounds, FMV's in game, and most importantly mature games with depth and character eg Final Fantasy VII onwards, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro ect, GTA was born here, Syphon Filter, Rainbow Six, Soul Blade spawned the Soul Calibur series, Tekken, Gran Turismo was born here, I could go on for ever, it's just my generation talking, and my soul.

Despite the Nintendo 64's power, just like the PS2 had one up over the Xbox, the Playstation ruled the show.

I provide you with the option to defy me, and my choice, and hereby state that I think the consoles to be in most ferocious arugment with me are going to be the NES/SNES.

Thank you all for taking part, gaming means a lot to me, as does talking about it and finding others' interests and reasons for those interests, enjoy the thread Thumbs Up

Edit, the poll forced me to remove some options, these are as follows, please just state your vote.

Sega Mega Drive I.
Personal Computer.
SNES/NES Were made into one entry.
Nintendo Gamecube (It was shit).
Nintendo Wii.
Xbox/Xbox 360 Was made into one entry (please specify)

Soul.

And then the PS2 came along and you could still play all your PS1 games. Thumbs Up

Snes all the way, it has a huge catalogue of incredible games and it's worth remembering that many cult classics were just follow ups to snes titles (and the originals were often arguably the best, mario kart anyone?).

It had some amazingly ground breaking games in it's day too, Yoshi's island was way ahead of it's time pioneering the use of pseudo 2D to achieve stunningly smooth animation without the data bloat suffered by the DK country games.

Of course, this adds to the PS2's superiority over the original Xbox, and also the fact that Microsoft were stingy enough to demand payment for a dvd remote to use a feature the console was capable of to start with, where as Sony lets you utilise their machines, and you can play dvds on a ps2 out of the box.

Ahh here we go, I knew the SNES would get a mention, I have yet to try this machine, maybe I will look into it, I am in a retro phase at the moment.

Gotta be PS1 the step up at the time was epic.

With early games like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7 which looked awesome at the time using pre rendered back grounds.

Moved from the ps to ps2 then jumped to xbox360, also have the ps3.

My vote goes to xbox360 though, the online play brought me back to gaming and the 360 is the leader in this with ease of use etc.

I love my Ps3 and Xbox BUT in my opinion I need to be awkward!

For the warrant of your poll, I will have to say Nintendo 64

It was out when I was working in a hotel with loads of woman, going out a lot more and having the occasional drag on something with my mates drinking beer and generally just enjoying myself.

Goldeneye
Mario Kart
Zelda
Bomberman
Turok
Destruction derby
FIFA
Killer instinct (ultra!)
Mortal
Resident evil

And on etc

I prefer the PS3 now or the xbox for gears and Halo

But for me having the fondest memories its has to be the Nintendo64

Thumbs Up

I think it is all relative. I thought the Mega Drive was the dogs bollocks when I owned it, I now think the Xbox 360 is amazing. They all have their own merits and i'm not sure I could pick out a clear favourite. I mean, what exactly do you base a decent console on? Graphics? Catalogue of games? You can get a lot of retro games for newer consoles, so are they better? I'm not sure.

The PC, although not a console introduced me into the soul destroying online arena. Online gameplay has turned a market which was close to stagnating (AI still isn't as good as you would hope) into a highly competetive arena. Finally being able to play Fifa against opposition instead of learning the AI's fallacies is fantastic.

I really cannot pick a favourite console. A lot of a consoles success is down to luck, but although I have never owned either console, Nintendo have always IMO been at the forefront of gaming. Goldeneye on the N64 was one hell of a coup, 4 player FPS? Game ON!

Nintendo Wii, motion based gameplay, although primative and the fact that Nintendo cannot convince themselves to grow up and stop accomodating for families (although a tried and tested formula for game sales)is pretty much up there with future development.

As such, I think it's safe to say I am positively excited by the next 10 years of console development. However I wont make any guesses as to where I think it is headed. Who'd have thought that near-perfect graphics would exist in only 10 years back in 1999?

With Ray-Tracing graphic technology expect to see the ceiling of graphics development in the next 5-10 years, some of the rendering through ray-tracing is as good as life like. Thumbs Up

It is a Gamecube with extra RAM and a new controller, literally, only other changes are the case it comes in and getting rid of shitty 8cm discs, although it still accepts them AND Gamecube controllers, because, it is in fact, a Gamecube.

I've never been a fan of games consoles, as I've always played games on my computer, from ZX spectrum, through Amiga to PC gaming.
My brother though, was a console fan, from Sega Master system, through Megadrive/snes, N64, Xbox, 360 and now he owns a ps3, and a Wii.

In our house we have a PS2 (now just a doorstop!) an Xbox 360 (in the kids bedroom) and a Nintendo Wii (in the living room.

Both my brother and I agree that the Nintendo Wii is the greatest console ever made.
Sure, it's not as awesome techniocally as some of the others, but it's accessability is awesome, any console that can get my parents playing has my vote.

Also, I can beat up my kids in Wii sports boxing, and not get arrested!

My vote goes for the original Xbox - Microsoft nailed the whole live experience from the outset and had some fantastic games to play. Project Gotham Racing 2, MotoGP 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein & Splinter Cell all bring back fond memories.

Unfortunately - I found that the Xbox 360 was just more of the same and became over crowded with screaming teens.

So I think the Xbox for providing something new, its just a shame (or maybe a good thing) that the novelty wore off after a year or so!!!!

hmmmmmmmm

Never really did games untill the 360 come out.
But that fucked up - and M/soft didnt wanna know so we sold - but i loved most games on that system.
We sold - got PS3 for good money and I like some games on that right now.
Split from the OH and got a 360 again - which was faulty from the word go Thumbs Down
Just getting back into it - with the 360 - Its ok.
But I will never forget PS1/2 Thumbs Up

For me it has to be the nes/snes. Purely because its what i was brought up on. I miss the days of playing real street fighter and donkey kong and blowing into the catridge to get it to work. My second choice would have to be Xbox 360 because of the online gameplay.

360 can play the orig xbox games same as ps2 can play the ps1 games, also the 360 can play dvd's outa the box (no need for remote). At the end of the day Its the hacks etc that make a console successful hence the wii and the 360's popularity.

Lol, the PS2 & PS3 can play DVD's out of the box two, with the PS3 being able to upscale them to HD resolutions & play BLu-Ray.

How is it the hacks that make a console sucessful? I always thought it was sales figures Rolling Eyes

Being able to play copied games is a massive incentive to buy a 360.

Although I'm sure LIVE pulls more people in, that and it being cheap.

The most amount of fun I've had on a console is 4-player Goldeneye and Mario Kart on the N64.

I voted mega drive.

I refuse to play first person shooter types with a gamepad, and also will never succumb to online multiplayer via a console, so for this reason the seventh generation consoles - or whatever we are on now - hold no interest for me what so ever.

PC gaming is losing its identity very quickly next to the consoles, too much copy protection, lack of decent paper manuals, a move towards digital distribution, and publishers generally not being arsed with it. Fed up of reading about a decent sounding game (that GTA4 biker expansion thing for example) only to hear it is a console exclusive, and usually exclusive to rival consoles as well). Evil or Very Mad

Mega Drive was my first proper game system and I have all the games on emulator now, some still hold up very well so this will hold a special place for me. The lack of a save system means that its not the kind of thing you play for hours at a time, but for half hour stints it can't be beat.

For sheer grin factor after this, it has to be the N64 for solid hours of multiplayer fun. Piled a scary amount of hours into Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Mariokart, but it didn't have much to offer beyond these big hitters.

Gamecube barely warrants a mention short of the resident evil exclusives. The Wii is too gimmicky and attempting to appeal to a much wider fanbase than just hardcore gamers so have found that it really has nothing to offer me. I am one of the few people that was totally unimpressed by the control system right from the off, I wonder when people will start waking up to the fact that is sucks.

This interactive dance dance revolution, guitar hero, repetitive puzzle game button mashing idea repeated ad nauseum phenomenon has totally passed me by.

Playstation was a good step up from the 16bit consoles, but after the novelty of half decent graphics wore off, far too many games were released and only very few were passable. Ones that I remember off the top of my head were tomb raider II, final fantasy 7, resident evil series, metal gear solid and gran turismo. Nothing else really stands out.

Unless you were into 2D fighting games the saturn didnt have much to offer (Nights into dreams, clockwork knight and panzer dragoon saga excused), and the dreamcast was fucked up by a woeful controller.

I've found my 'modern' gaming niche in the end of the 90's, early 2000's. I think the newest game i've bought was Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and I stopped playing that 2 years ago. Got a group of about 20-30 PC games that I just play over. For when none of these appeal, i'll go and fire up my genesis emulator. Thumbs Up

I don't like the way gaming is going.

I voted Atari 2600, as thats the console that started it all really. I still remember unwrapping mine on xmas day and playing pacman and return of the jedi!

After that would be the xbox/360 as that revolutionised multiplayer.
