Easiest way is to visit your tax office with your P45 or P60 and they will give you a P85 or a P50 form to fill in , fill it in there and then.

I did it yesterday took me 10 minutes.

If you are still employed just phone your tax office up and they should adjust your tax code so you receive it back with your next pay cheque.

Just take your P60 (I think) to your local tax office.

I've done it a couple of times in the past and they've been very helpful, even filling in the forms for me.

Yeah, my new boss made an enquiry for me, and hey presto! I get three separate cheques that really made me smile...and rather than do the usual thing and bank it, I treated myself and bought a small automatic car...the best present I've had in a long time.

I really didn't realise how badly driving actually hurt me till I got this new motor. Thumbs Up

In a way I'm glad I over paid tax for a year or two.

Hmm Noob question now - How do I find out if im due tax return?
Do you earn so much a year tax free?
Because I had 2 employers (same company) since April 08
I never got a P45 from the manager that got sacked.
Then the new boss over took in September 08 - Im still waiting for my P45 - its been almost 2 months and I have asked for it Thumbs Down

Use your latest payslip and look at the year to date.

For April 6th 2008 to April 5th 2009 you should get a Personal allowance of

£6,035, everything above that 20% tax , unless you are higher rate tax payer

just punch it into an online calculator and don't consider the NIC,

If you want to ask HMRC as they should have the records from the P35s , but this is a risk in that you might owe them something instead.

Thats not always true , in that it depends on the tax office...

If you've been overtaxed and still in work they adjust your tax code so you get it back next pay cheque, if you aren't in work then they send you a cheque.

It varies between the time of year also , in that if you get fired May then there is still 11 months of the tax year and they will say you will probably get another job in these 11 months and they will keep delaying it.

But its March almost end of 2008/09 they'll send you a cheque if you aren't in work by now.

This is the bitch - I have no payslips - I never keep them Thumbs Down
I do know tho - I was underpaid for 4-5 months buy at least £100 a month (part time) and because I cant get hold of Leo (first boss) I have no chance in reclaiming that.
How ever - I did pay tax but I cant remember how much (my fault I know)

When Paul over took I was full time - I took home £1000 a month but after tax it was £830.....
I dont really looking into these things so again its my fault but I am just wondering if Im due anything.

I have no payslips - But, I never received my last pay slip from paul for Jan 09 - Do I ask for that - or is there no point?

Again, Ive been lazy so I dont expect nothing back but I am wondering if I could be 'due' something soon...=)

Proof that nobody reads warnings, it says on ALL pay slips DO NOT DESTROY.

Ask for your payslips and your P45, you have a right to them withing reasonable time of termination of employment.

Failing that you will have to get them via HMRC via the P35s but as said this carries an element of risk, you can't back calculate it via the amounts you were BACS'd as you don't know your code. If you are certain you were over taxed, phone HMRC and state you don't have your P45 or P60 or payslips (form P50 and P85 require this as evidence), and they should sort it all out and maybe give the company a talking to for not issuing payslips or P45s. As they will have it on the P35 and monthly PAYE returns they have to send in.

Tut tut you are supposed to keep them 7 years minimum (ie the period which HMRC can investigate back to) I keep them for 8 years.

Yes, as that will have the cumulative amount of earnings and tax deducted on those.
