Was in a very similar situation to you just before Christmas Jamsxr. Amongst our group of friends we usually have a big communal Christmas dinner (25or so of us), when asked if I was coming to this years one that next week, my reply was 'what Christmas dinner this year?'. Apparently there had been a gruop started on Facebook nearly 3weeks before to help organise it all. Being in my final year of uni (after being here for 6yrs!) means that not that many of my friends are students anymore and what with some of them being medics and working odd hours you can't just send a quick text 10mins before you're due to go out inviting them to somewhere. By the same token, I might not actually be awake when they think of something they want to ask me or invite me to a party etc. This is where Facebook comes in.
I've also got got photos up there from my travels so that people who are interested can have a look at them and I don't have to bore them to death with the sort of anecdotes you collect when travelling the world with the same 3 people for 10weeks! Win win there! I also like the fact that it kind of replaces the old thing you used to get when you would bring your developed roll of film in to show your friends the pics from a holiday etc. and how everyone would comment on them - you do the same with facebook photos.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, if you use Facebook for exactly what it was designed for (i.e. social networking, organising and photo sharing) then it is a very efficient tool. What I don't get on with is all the fake crap e.g. 'send a present to x' or 'how well do you know y - quiz' and everyone's biggest pet hate, the innapropriate status updates - 'dave feels like a crap', 'dave is on the toilet', 'dave says, that certainly wasn't a one wiper!!!11'
Sorry, that went on a bit longer than expected!

Facebook is sh1t and slightly sad. Don't bother with it, I'm going to deactivate my account later. Everytime you do something on youtube it updates automatically on fb. Sh1te. People that never speak in real life add you and message you and still ignore you in the real world.
EDIT/ Deactivated it. FB. |

I'm in the minority too ... I don't have a facebook account (well that isn't strictly true, I made one just to see what all the fuss is about but never use it).
If I want to electronically chat to my mates, I use email and/or MSN ... unless you are into flirting with the world, I really don't see what facebook has to offer over email etc? If anything surely it loses the intimacy of conversation between people?
I really don't see what the fuss is all about myself ... ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |

I have bebo, the small number of people I count as friends have recently graduated to facebook and keep saying 'come on over, its great...'
So far I have resisted, who has time to continually update online profiles, photos, blogs blah blah blah... We managed without them for long enough, exactly what value do they bring to life bearing in mind it solved a problem that never really existed in the first place.
So much of what we get these days does exactly that. Its all part of hyperactive consumerism. All these companies continually telling us; look at this, how did you survive without it!?! All they've done is manufactured a 'problem,' convinced us we have it then sat back and watched as rampant consumerism, helpless 'keeping up with the jones' and peer pressure have us all running around like headless chicken spending so much time maintaining our social networks, that we don't have any time to actually speak to people properly.
I'm a bit of a norman, a bit carmudgeonly to be honest. But I can't log into my MSN chat thing any more because so many people try talking to me at the same time. You get the "Hi, haven't spoken to you in ages " I'm all 'who the fuck are you then??' And do you know the really stupid thing? I'm worried that if I go in and remove all the people I can't recall or don't know... It'll tell them and they'll be offended! I'm virtually pathetic!!
Its like we've reached the pinnacle of need. There isn't anything else, we have everything we could possibly need. So Corporations are creating new problems to solve in order stay afloat, meanwhile, we're all drowning in an ocean of mediocre products we just don't require, but strangely think we need, to solve problems we don't actually have.
Ummm, sorry, no I don't have facebook...

To be honest, I don't miss it anyway. Is it not more satisfying actually speaking to someone in person?
How often have you heard stories where someone has misunderstood something and its mostly been down to the writer not really being able to express themselves adequately with words. A majority of human communication is done with body language, MSN etc renders it useless.
As for using Bebo, I haven't looked at it in a while. What I would say about it though, is it has to be the top website online for allowing its members to have the longest profile pages ever, you could scroll down for ever and ever and never reach the bottom...
On the upside, if you have a bike stolen, chances are it'll appear in the photo section of someones bebo profile given enough time.

I use facebook, a lot.
I've got friends all over the country, a lot of who I don't get to see enough of, facebook allows me to keep in touch with them reguarly. I quite often get invited to parties via facebook, it's an easy way to contact a lot of people at once and make plans.
I also use it to contact promoters to book gigs, so networking, which it is really useful for, there is some promoters who request you contact them on facebook instead of via phone or email. I also keep in touch with other comics via facebook, it's good to keep up with other comics and find out what's going on, if there's any new gigs about or ones I've missed etc, for comedy it's invaluable.
Not to mention uploading pics and videos etc
I don't use apps at all, they're a waste of my time but other than that facebook is a very good thing for me.
Plus, sometimes, pics of mingles appear. |

Bebo - for children and everyone that can only communicate in 'text speak' or 'hAxOR' language.
Myspace - for people trying to promote art and/or music.
Facebook - everyone else. ____________________ As seen on Google Street View https://tinyurl.com/yfdvojc |

mistergixer, I read the article you linked to with great interest and then I saw this in the article.
| Quote: | I am a popular dude on the Internet |
Oh right, so some guy who is loved on the internet doesn't like facebook, wow, his opinion means loads to me.
Piss off, your irrational hatred of facebook is irrelevant, not everybody on there details their every movement on there, yeah some do but that's their problem.
Elitism, heh, some people will try to seize any oppurtunity to feel superior in some way, guess what, you're clutching at straws, now fuck off and sit in the corner and think about why you really don't have facebook, is it because you don't want everyone knowing everything about you? (because yeah, you HAVE to put every detail of your life in) or is it because nobody gives a shit about you and signing up would just confirm this to you. |
