polishing rims - and keeping them polished

I was just reading sond's project post...

And have now decided that I want to polish my rims as he has done.
So I want to get the inner part of the wheel powder coated and polish the outer rim/edge like so...

What would be the best way of doing this? I will be getting the wheels sand blasted then powdercoated.

But what is the best way of doing this? powdercoat the whole wheel then sand back the area I want to polish or would the coaters be able to mask off the area I want to polish? I assume not as they will need to bake the wheel.

Or is it jsut going to be easier to paint the wheel myself? paint suggestions?

The powder coater could probably mask off the area, spray the powder on, remove the masking tape and then bake the wheel.

So once it is all painted and polished how do I keep it shiney without polishing it all the time?

I'm guessing some kind of lacquer?

You could use lacquer but if it's not professional you might get ripples or drips in it. You could just polish them every once in a while. Wouldn't take too long to get them back up to a lovely shine again.

my dad is a polisher by trade 16+ years, he lacquers them but you have to use a good lacquer he use's two-pac or something, its about £30 but it lasts a few jobs.

an if your wondering he charges between £30-£80 a wheel depending (could be more if its a real tw*t).

To get that polished efect mask on the painted side then use nitromous and sandpaper to get ride of the paint and continue working up the grades of sandpaper then progess onto autosol.

I've heard clear powder coating exists... may be worth a look in to.

I've got no idea how much it's going to flatten the shine back though... it's something you'd have to look in to.

It does exist but usually gives a yellowy tinge after baking, which isnt to alot of peoples likings.

seen some with the black centre fading to polished on the rims i fancy for my blade
they are easier to keep clean than the polished rims as well

Wouldnt bother with getting them clear coated after you polish them.

My NC29 had polished frame, Swing arm, Rims and top yoke.
They were all just diamond cut alloy. So polishing was required.

I'd go over the whole lot, Once a month, With some Autosol. Not loads, Didn't have to work at it. Just a smear, And polish like you'd polish a car,

On a weekly basis, I'd polish the whole bike, And just polish the frame/wheels etc while im at it. Just using normal car polish.
