Insurance write off back onto the road?

I went to view a very good condition bike the other day. I know these bikes very well and know where they crack/bend/wear when front ended crashed etc. This bike was exactly how the ad described. It had only done 8k.
It does however have light scuff marks on the exhaust and a dent in the tank as the ad said when it was dropped down the road... as the ad described nothing new.

I HPI'd the bike and it came up cat b. It just says 'CAT B BODY CRUSHED' which i guess some knob head of an insurance worker as classed a dent in the tank as a Cat b write off!! Even the seller was shocked. It's been through an mot since this Cat b.

I rang VOSA and DVLA they both said it only needs an mot to go back onto the road even as a cat b??

Anyone else been through this?

I had a bike years ago that had 3 police write-off notices on it. Was always fun when stopped.

i think cat B has to have an inspection before being used on the road again and if its cat C or less it doesnt?

This is exactly what I thought that Cat B's couldn't be put back onto the road. It seems stupid for a dented tank it's been written off.

I rang VOSA and they said motorcycles don't apply for "Vehicle Identity Check (VIC)" after any Insurance write off and Cat B bike would only need a new mot which it's already had in the past.

I rang DVLA and they said the same!?!

Tomorrow im going to ring my local VOSA Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) place in Guildford and see what the score is with them.

Best I can make out the insurance write off category system is just an insurance industry thing that they try and make sound like a legal restriction.

Most CAT B's that I have seen couldnt be identified, never mind driven/ridden again.

Also possible that it is a ringer, and someone has tried to give it a new ID with the history of a cat b write off.
