My parent's want me to put a keylogger on my sisters computer subtley, so they can watch what she is doing. They were going to do it themselves, which I don't think is fair so I offered to do it.

The only thing is, I don't particularly care about it too much, and I don't know anything about them. Oh and she has a password on her computer so installing one of these things would be difficult if not impossible.

I think the only way to do it would be to send her a music album or something with a keylogger in it, but thats bordering on a bit illegal isn't it?

My opinion on doing this would depend on the age of your sister.

Unless your sister is involved in some serious stuff I'd be worried about your parents not trusting your sister. She should be given some of her on privacy... them meddling won't help at all.

But then again I haven't a clue on the actual situation so should probably STFU.

If she is quite young then install glubble on her pc, it's the net equivalent of wrapping her in bubble wrap before letting her play on the swings.

Not keen on spying myself, cheap parenting.

Prevention > Detection.

But you could always spy cam her room, put gps trackers in all her shoes and covertly obtain urine and hair samples once a month to make sure she isn't pregnant or doing crack.

Hassle free, that way you can also get her windows login and create a back door to her machine, if you are networked at home.

Keyloggers are on questionable legal ground at the best of times. Most places that sell the hardware ones make a big point of saying that they're solely to make sure that no-one's trying to use your computer when you're not there.
If they're after what websites she's visiting, many routers offer logging capabilities.
Failing that, a silent version of VNC can be set up, and that means you can watch whatever she does on screen.
However, I reiterate; this is dodgy legal ground. Ethically speaking, I'd have to say that you should step away from it. Why do you have to do your parent's dirty work for them?

It's not that we need parental control it's already locked down, basically shes autistic, and her therapist person asked that we find out what she looks at on the internet, because obviously being impressionable there are things even on like wikipedia that confuse/scare/bring out a reaction.

Oh and shes 14, but has the mental age of about 12.

I know if the situation was different it would be wrong, but we can't stop her using the internet, it's too much to get into, but it kind of brings down social barriers, so it's good for her to use, it's already parental controlled and that.

Cheers, I've found a program which will store history of viewed websites in detail, which I think is a better choice from privacy's point of view, is better than a keylogger.

Send her an email "from an anonymous friend" saying "be careful, your parents have installed a key logger". Paranoia should do the rest.

just a side note worth rememerbing too.

with windows XP if you get the pc/laptop to boot up in safe mode you get an admin account option - this has no password and allows you to remove passwords on user accounts without knowing them, but you can also look through files and stuff on the account. i know because i used to regularly have a need to remove unkown passwords.

so you could still get access to her stuff without her knowing and without you knowing her password. dont know if its the same in vista - but it's likely.

If it's just to see what websites she's looking at then it can be done easily by looking at history, cookies or just a web address logger, a keylogger is major overkill. I also think it's a pretty nasty thing to do because she could be talkingt to friends or writing anything on the computer and you'll all be reading it, like rifling through her diary. If she has the mental age of 12yrs then I doubt she covers all her tracks or has the ability to detect a web logger and probably believes a password is all she needs, finding out what sites she visits is not going exactly going to be mission impossible.

If she had any trust in you, then you could just ask her.


Also, if you are worried about her seeing something, you will only know AFTER she has seen it, and a keylogger is useless for the internet, seeing as you can put 1 word into Google and browse for ages with just the mouse.
