The original and best Punk Band... The Ramones.
All others are pale imitators.

That is a big thing to say, that all punk bands imitate the Ramones.

Ever heard of Disrupt? Amebix? Very different to The Ramones.

In 1986 I started a new job and had to sit next to Hoxton Tom (4 Skins) for a year. Never understood a word he said most of the time. In 1994 he became my boss until 2002, when he got a better job in another borough.

Typical Tom quote, 'Ere, Ken Livingstone wants my views on letting motorbikes go into the new congestion charging zone for free. I'm gonna tell him only well dressed geezers on scooters should get in fer free, greasy oiks like you should pay double, ya muppet!'

Dischord: If you like the bands you listed, pogo along on to Fat Wreck Chords, run by Fat Mike of NOFX. Pretty much any of the bands on that label will do stuff you like, judging by the few bands you listed above.

Also, try Alkaline Trio, early Brand New (the later stuff is better, but the early stuff is more the right genre), and Goldfinger, maybe try New Found Glory, Valencia, SR-71, Houston Calls, Less Than Jake and Jimmy Eat World... basically there are dozens that all offer that kind of sound. EDIT: Try Yellowcard too, they've just come on my itunes and I think they're awesome.

And don't forget The Offspring, if you haven't listened to them already.

I heard a whooshing sound a few hours ago, must have been the sarcasm flying over your head.

Many of the bands mentioned previously are more 'New Wave' than 'Punk' - whatever those labels mean.

Whoever mentioned the Clash must surely have been having a laugh - they are about as far removed from punk as can be. The phrase 'sell-out' springs to mind. The only decent thing they did was grasp the coat-tails of roots, especially the DJ style (Mikey Dread for example)

Really, you only need 2 groups, from the USA it has to be the Dead Kennedys, from the UK it just has to be Crass. Of the 2, Crass are without doubt the finer.

Anything else is just a pale imitation.

And here was me thinking that whoosh was the definition of sarcasm passing you by...

"Sarcasm: a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual"

As there was no wit, and little hint of irony (as we all know how hardcore you are, duuuude), it looked less like sarcasm and more a sweeping generalisation to me Wink

Thanks for the suggestions so far, gonna check out these bands! I've been into Punk music for years, have delved into all the sub genres and the only reason I requested pop punk is because it's really uplifting!

If any of you have soulseek let me know your username and I'll check out what you've got! Thumbs Up Very Happy

Not at all, year sure they covered allot of genres, including ska, and reggae. But that doesn’t mean they are not a punk band! Have you heard songs like White Riot, and London’s burning, they also did the first decent cover of I Fought the Law, who the Dead Kenndies then covered again a few years later? Sure they are not an out an out punk band but they cover punk rock, rock, and reggae.

Clash.
RAR. Sell-outs. Fakes.
Wink

From 'White Punks on Hope':

They said that we were trash,
Well the name is Crass, not Clash.
They can stuff their punk credentials
Cause it's them that take the cash.
They won't change nothing with their fashionable talk,
All their RAR badges and their protest walk,
Thousands of white men standing in a park,
Objecting to racism's like a candle in the dark.
Black man's got his problems and his way to deal with it,
So don't fool yourself you're helping with your white liberal shit.
If you care to take a closer look at the way things really stand,
You'd see we're all just niggers to the rulers of this land.

Punk was once an answer to years of crap,
A way of saying no where we'd always said yep.
But the moment we saw a way to be free,
They invented a dividing line, street credibility.
The qualifying factors are politics and class,
Left wing macho street fighters willing to kick arse.
They said because of racism they'd come out on the street.
It was just a form of fascism for the socialist elite.
Bigotry and blindness, a marxist con,
Another clever trick to keep us all in line.
Neat little labels to keep us all apart,
To keep us all divided when the troubles start.

When you that good you can't help but sell out. There were still around before and after Crass, and will always be remembered as one of the greatest British bands ever!

You can help selling out. If you sell loads of records, that's not selling out. If you change your principles in order to do so, that is.

AJI, I was taking the piss out of people who say things like pop-punk is gay. Music is music and you like what you like. It's hard to get that across on t'interweb though.

Good business sense though Wink If the music is selling better than I think quite a few bands won't mind alienating some of their original fans. If you lose one original fan for every 20 bandwagon-jumpers you gain, then you'll make stacks of money.

Obviously, it's questionable behaviour, and if the band fails then they may find no original fans to fall back on!
