I am taking some kids to the theatre in London over the Easter holiday (Lion King). Will it be possible to park my LDV 16 seater high roofed mini-bus in the area? I think the best thing would be to drop them off and drive over the river and park up near Tate Modern and pick them up after the show. My solution means I miss the show although I am more motivated by the the prospect of up close time with the pretty young English teacher than a desire to watch a little lion get orphaned. I need to sort things quickly as we need to buy tickets.
Thanks Wali

Yes, you will have to pay the Livingstone tax, and it can be done at tfl.gov.uk.

That English teacher: pics or it didn't happen!

As for parking, expect to get seriously shafted: I've got a photo somewhere of a place just off Oxford street that wanted something like £25 for four hours...

No congestion charge at the weekends but get's awfully busy on the roads as you'd expect.

Might want to google "Low emissions zone" to see if you are affected by that.

Not sure on the parking front, best to consult google if I'm honest.

Or you can just pay at any newsagent/petrol station somewhere in London on the day.

You'll be able to stop and drop off no problem, but there isn't anywhere you'll be able to park and leave it allowing you to see the show (assuming its a long wheel base job, this rules out parking bays, and it wont fit in any car parks). But you don't sound massively disappointed by that Wink

You may be entitled to use bus lanes, but I have no clue about the facts of this, so may be worth looking into if you will find that of any benefit.

Thanks, that confirms what I thought. I can use bus-lanes, will that be a good thing in London? In Brum every one uses buslanes to park in so they are a pain.

Depends, some are crap, others will save hours, I have often envied the buses on Piccadilly on a busy day, they even have traffic lights prioritised in their favour.

They are very stringently enforced in London, but a lot only operate between certain hours, so if it isnt in operation it just becomes another lane for congestion to form (the one saving grace is a lot of london drivers are too fucking stupid to read/understand the signage. So you can occasionally cut a load of traffic out because you bothered to read the sign).

Where in London are you going? If you're parking a van, look for the 'squares' as generally the spaces are facing outwards from the sqaure, meaning you can fit anything in them, I've had my long wheelbase sprinter there many times.

Are you going to the theatre during the day or evening? During the day its £4 an hour, usually 4 hours max, after 5.30/6 they are usually free Thumbs Up

St James Square next to Pall Mall is generally best for theatre-land.

Location-

Have a look here, you can see all the vans using the area.

If you decide you want to park, C.Garden is only 5/10 walk from St James square Thumbs Up

Have a good time!

Oh, and also, don't stop on Yellow lines, thinking 'I'll just drive off when I see a traffic Warden' because they will be raping you via the CCTV ticket sending machine!

I do not want to chance not being a parking space there. With school trips we need to do a lot of planing and risk assessment so it is best to just drop the kids as near the theatre in a pre planed place than rely on trying to find a parking space that may or may not exist. It is the kids trip and not mine so I will ere on the side of caution and safety.

Too many cameras in London for that malarkey.

Down here, people even avoid the bus lanes when they're ALLOWED to go in them.

I often notice people in mid-afternoon all sitting in the car queue when the bus lane signs blatantly says from, e.g., 9-12 and 4-7. Many work on the "better to be safe than sorry" mentality, which to be fair isn't a bad thing, and keeps London moving these days.

How on Earth do people cope with London? If I was taking kids to a venue in Central Brum I would be able to park in anyone of a dozen municiple carparks within half a mile.
Do you think I could drop them off and pick up from the carpark on Charring Cross Station?

Personally, I think London is great for people my age (mid twenties)

If I had kids, I certainly wouldn't bring them up here. I tend to look at kinds and think "poor buggers", growing up with all this traffic and nowhere to go play footy within 5 mins walk.

Possibly, but the drop off drive in thingy isnt always open from what I saw.

As far as driving rules go, it might as well be a different planet, you just get used to it I guess. London taught me how to map read properly. Found it quite stressful for quite a while, but eventually used to enjoy the challenge of driving around making deliveries there during the day.

I doubt, however, you could pay me enough to live there. It's such an impersonal place, and unless you were born there, I doubt you could ever feel part of it. It always feels like walking on top of a painting or through a film set. Bizarre anonymity.

I took the wife & kids to see the Lion King at the Lyceum in Covent Garden a couple of Christmasses ago.

I have to say it was a bloody good show, really entertaining and the costumes were excellent (especially the giraffes on stilts). The little lad who played Simba was brilliant.

I also enjoyed hearing the Yankee tourists pronounce it 'Co-vent gurr-den'.

However.....

At the time the missus was heavily pregnant. Did anyone offer her a seat whilst we were on the tube? Did they fuck. Miserable mannerless cunts.

None of my Gifted and Talented students are up the duff so that will not be a problem. Very Happy I always give my seat up on the bus or on the tube for women pregnant or not, old dears give me a smile and the younger ones have been known to put out for my minor act of kindness.

I'll bet they wouldn't give up their seat for an old codger like yourself either.

The day they do is the day I take that fast ride over that high cliff.

I told Miss K**** (the nice English teacher) that I may have broken bones on the theatre trip as I am racing at Red Marley two days before the London gig.

Man if that should happen it will make Jean Charles de Menezes last day on the tube look uneventful.

I could arrange free parking through my old man in Islington for as long as you want at weekends.

Think that's miles away from where you want to be though. Don't really know much about London (other than its a f-in rip-off).

By being very selfish.
I try not to be.

Twice this week I've given up my seat for pregnant girls.
Whilst an entire row of men, both young and old, English and foreign, sat stock still staring ahead, at their feet, at their hands (anywhere but at the mad old woman giving up her seat to a younger woman whilst they sit on their fat arses).

Occasionally a very nice young Nigerian bloke gives his seat up for me on the way home after work. I'm not quite sure whether its always the same one (I'm sorry, but there ARE so many of them round my way that they DO all look the same) ... but I always smile graciously and say thank you. Gratefully. Because by the end of the day I am grateful, I'm usually exhausted and can barely stand up. The other day I saw a woman who I swear must have been in her late seventies (liver spots on her hands) and she had to ASK someone to give her a seat. I was already standing else I would have done.

Living in London really does make you selfish, and often one acts in an ignorant manner much against one's principles, merely for the sake of self-preservation.

Anyway: parking ... no idea. I don't drive big vehicles, sorry, not much help. I'd come and pick it up and drive it around whilst you sit on the Embankment and chat with your love interest, except I'm probably working if its a Wednesday. I can't even suggest where to park it near my work, cos I work in Chelsea and they're arseholes for parking round there. Best off, I reckon, parking up in an NCP if you're feeling wedged up, and taking her off for a stroll down along the Embankment.

Laughing Never thought of it like that, on top of a painting/film set, before Laughing I suppose it must feel like really. I always felt like that when I was in the USA, but never in London (although since the advent of Guy Ritchie movies, maybe I understand what you mean, haha) - there was some filming going on in the street next to mine, last week. Big cameras, lights and stuff. No idea why they would want to film in a very seedy and rundown East London side street, but hey ... I'm not the location director (an immensely interesting job, I should think).

Anonimity has its pros and cons. I like the anonymity of a big city, always have. You can come and go and nobody bothers you. I hate that in a small town everybody knows your entire business and make a point of discussing it with everybody else. Of course, anonimity has an obvious and quite large downside that nobody cares whether you live or die, a bit annoying at times.

But you do get to feel part of it, once you settle and make friends:

I noticed an event (on the maligned Facebook, I might add) for a gig at the Embassy Club in Mayfair, which sounded interesting. I spotted that one or two of my mates were in the list of otherpeeps receiving the same notification, so we nagged them about going, but they were too skint.

So we trotted along anyway, on Monday night: saw a couple of brilliant rock bands, and discovered that two OTHER of our mates were there, and hadn't even told us they were going. We were well pleased to see them. Turns out they know the organiser REALLY well (turns out even Andy knows him, no idea why I don't know him, after all these years, he knows half my mates, LOL) ... so now Anita and I have managed to blag regular guest-list priorities, hoorah!
