Yokohama Tyres - Any good?

Hi! I'm paranoid when it comes to tyres. Has anyone heard/used Yokohama tyres for cars? I've never heard of them (certainly not in the bike field) so I'm a bit wary they're going to crappy budget tyres. Are they?

Really? That's strange, they always seem to be a lot cheaper than conti's and michelins, might look into that then.

Ok, next question, before I order them, is speed ratings. My car can only dream of doing 130mph, let alone 150mph. Can order V tyres, even though there are currently W tyres on it?

I had H rated tyres on my old Mondeo. They need to be the same rating on each axle to pass an mot too.

Ehm, does that mean all 4 tyres need to have the same rating for the MOT?

Just phoned an MOT place, the MOT tester was out, the secretary said she thinks it's just the front pair that have to match, and the rear pair have to match, but "Don't hold her to that".

I think she's right. As said, as long as theey are the same on each axle then it should be ok.

Hi

Yokahama car tyres are generally good, but tend to be aimed at the sports end of the market rather than the original equipment commuter car market that the well known tyre brands mainly aim at.

They used to make bike tyres years ago. Think that they gave about 1990 so any you find (and they do pop up occasionally) are very old stock.

A friend of mine had a H rated (130mph) Yoko blow out at 120mph on the motorway last night, it wasn't really coming to the end of its life either.

My experience of Yokos was fantastic dry grip, but they may as well have been wooden hoops for all the good they did in the wet.
Haven't used them for over 10 years, so they may have sorted that by now.

Were those A520s mistergixer? We had them on the Maserati for a while and they were great in the dry, but the were poor in the wet and went to being dire when a bit worn (alternating treads were only half depth).

The A509 and A539 were great in the wet.

I'll be darned if i can remember, it was back in the late '90s and i had them on 15" rims on my 'Rocco - massive understeer and frequent lock-ups under hard braking ('Rocco brakes are shite, so all braking was hard).
But,
in the dry, all was forgiven, and i was always to be found with a grin like a Cheshire cat - unlike my passengers!

yokos good in the dry, absolutely shocking in the wet, even if the road is damp the struggle, i had falkens on my old rx7 they were quality and slightly cheaper than yokos.

why do you want yokos anyway?
