Off to look at a 96 fiesta later for my wife [not a bad swap I hear you say]

Any know faults or problems to look for?

Personally, its two wheels too many for me

Details sketchy at the moment, its word of mouth.

All I know right now is '96, taxed & MOTed and lady driver owned it for years

I had a slightly earlier one - 94 or 95 I think, it had numerous problems with the "clutch quadrant", apparently it's a part made of plastic than often goes. Results in the clutch pedal going to the floor with no effect. Owned the car for 3 years from new and had to have it sorted at least 4 times. Other than that, no problems.

Bit more info.

1400cc, last advisories were track control bush, flexi brake hose & rust to OS sill. Family owned since new, loads of history, bit of T&T, £100.

For a ton you can't go too far wrong, but I would expect more welding on the next sheet if there was some on the last if I'm honest.

Should be the zetec lump, so it'll be fairly robust.

Hard to really point out a lot of things that can go wrong with a £100 car, as, err, everything can really

Welding is no problem for me, as are most mechanical things. Just never comfortable opening up an engine - so for £100 I think it should be OK unless there's something seriously wrong.

I think for that year the 1400 was not a zetec. They brought out the 1250 around that time that was zetec

Even if its a pushrod engine it is a piece of cake to work on and good little workhorses.

first thing i wud do mate is give it a service and change the cam belt.

+1 on changing the cambelt as a precautionary measure. You're supposed to do them every 4 years on a Zetec even if you don't do enough miles to warrant a replacement.

is that the 96-N(last of mk3) or 96-P(early mk4),if it's the P it's a zetec lump,and if it runs ok £100 is a pretty good price,the N was still on the cvh lump but even so at £100 if it goes through test without costing to much you wouldn't give a toss if it was knackered after 12 month it'll have served it's purpose

if its the 1.3 its the push rod engine named 'endura' if its a 1.4 its a zetec. The zetec being a more modern ohc engine has more things that can go wrong!

been having trouble with mine recently, won't pass an emmissions test. They're very easy to work on but if something goes wrong it can be a pain (although really i'm talking for all cars here!!)

i had that same problem with my golf gti,probably because i'd smashed the internals of the cat out,i just gave the tester £30 on the sly and he run another car through the emisions test with my cars details on the printout

I prefer to buy disposable cars rather than anything too flash - that way we don't give a stuff if it doesn't go more than 12 months.

I bought my n reg 1.6si for 150 quid with a months t+t, I had to pay 80 quid for a set of new front tyres, thats about it. Mine had been sitting for 3 years, and fired up first try after a battery charge with the old fuel.
