TLR 1000 - Your Opinions

I'm pretty set on getting a TLR1000 now. They seem to appeal to me in every way.

I can also insure one for 2/3 the cost of insuring an R6. And 1/2 the cost of an R1.


I've heard about the rear suspension issues. Are there any other really bad points I should consider before buying one?

Also what is the difference between the RW and the RY. And whatever other models there are. I don't want to know about the TLS.

Whats the going rate on one, And a reasonable price to expect to pay. I've seen them going for the £1900 - £2200 mark in reasonable condition. Theres an awesome example on ebay at the moment with upgraded everything, Buy it now at £3000.

If you can get one with all the suspension upgraded then I'd go for that. I love the looks and the fact it's a bigger bike than your average sports these days. I considered one myself, but in the end went for an Aprilia RSV Mille 'R' (full ohlins, ohlins steering damper, lightened wheels etc) . Not that a normal RSV is a bad bike.. I imagine they handle better than a stock TL1000R (though with the suspension sorted I imagine the TL will take back the advantage).

Can't wait to go get my bike on Wednesday.

Oh and I forgot to add, I've done some quick online quotes and had it as low as £445 for the year TPFT, not bad and I haven't made any phone-calls to play them against each other yet . I'm 20 (21 in May) with 3yrs NCB.

I rode a totally standard one a couple of years ago, and to be honest, I was expecting it to be a complete pig, but it wasn't. It was fantastic fun. Ok, I wouldn't say flickable in the same sense of a sports 600, but your mind isn't in sports 600 mode when you ride it. I think they're cracking bikes and cracking buys. £2000 sounds about right for a very good condition one.

I'd be tempted if I didn't already have the SV1000s.

i always thought it was the TL1000S that got called the widowmaker. had a recall and they fitted steering dampers or something?

never heard of the TLR1000 having this.

ive owned a 98 tl 1000s. handled ace and sounded the dogs bollocks. u either love or ate v twins. completely diff from 4 cylinders. get one bought and make your own mind up

Have you ridden a big twin? That'd be the first step if you haven't .

The TL is a bit 'heavy' compared to modern sports bikes and even with sorted suspension still has the "handles like it's on rails" things - which I've always taken to mean "doesn't change direction very quickly" .

Have you got quotes for a similar age R6 - wouldn't have thought the difference in price would be the same for al companies if so?

R6 quotes were coming out at £400~
For a 2000 - 2003 R6.

R1 quotes were coming out at £750~
For same sort of year. 2000 - 2003. Even the 98R1 was going to cost £715.

TLR1000 2000 model. £315 TPFT with legal cover, break down cover etc etc.

I've printed the quote, So thats what I'll be paying if I get one.



Not ridden a big twin yet no, I've owned a NC30 V4. But Its probably a completely different ball game.

Theres a TLR on ebay at the moment, Dymag wheels, Sorted suspension, Sorted brakes, exhaust, damper etc etc. for £3k. He's only up the road from me, I was going to go have a look and make an offer.

I liked my TL1000R and would love another one now but it's worth spending the extra and getting one with the suspension already sorted and upgraded! wave2k had one and loved it

Ive just Purchased one, picking it up next week. Its VERY different ton an IL4 but im hoping to get used to it.
Im 6`1" and for the 40 miles I tested it, it was very comfy.

Loved my TL1000R, bought it for £2500 in 2007 with Ohlins rear, front internals, steering damper and a full Yoshimura system.
One thing to note that ive found (im looking for a bike too), is that the recession has made expensive bikes cheap, but cheap bikes a bit more expensive, as demand for cheap bikes its going up.

Anyway TLRs.

They are quite big and heavy, but when properly set up they can be a dream, they hold a line well and dont turn in as slow as some might think.
For the money, you cant go wrong and id choose one over a IL4 1000.

Yeah id have one, as i definately think that they are a bit of a cult bike like the Firestorm and some other not very popular big sports machines were. The ZX7R also falls very well into this catagory, as does the GSXR750 these days.

I don't think anyone would dispute that for the same money if you could get an RSV1000 it would be the better bike, as would a 996, but for a big twin thats got a tough image id have one any day. I'd like an SP2 Edwards rep more, but they are like rocking horse shit, and how much extra would a mint SP2 be over a well sorted TLR!

Does the TL-R have a 'tough' image? I always had that reserved purely for the early TL-S - though a fellow ZX6R-J owner said he'd still choose his 600 for the fun of the engine character over his TL-S for a road-ride.
