Does a 30 limit mean 30mph?

So - do you obey 30mph limts? How about the rest.

More and more I am sticking to 30's and often 40's too. Where the limit is 50 or more my speed depends on the road and the conditions.

Totally agree. Since passing my test I generally stick to 30's etc, sepecially through towns. Not sure why, maybe I just grew up?

if circumstance and conditions dictate yes, otherwise at whatever speed I consider safe. Unless I'm in a part of the country where I don't know the road layout and I'll generally stick to them since you simply don't know where the cameras and speed traps will be.

Never exceed 50 in a 30 though I don't think but I'm on about country side 30's through villages that are safe for 50mph at least despite actually being a 30 limit.

Around town I tend to stick to 30 or less unless the roads are wide open/visibility is good etc..

Usually stick to within 5mph of the speed limit except for national speed limits where it depends on the road/conditions/frame of mind.

You have to be within 10%, so 33 in a 30. But speed cameras (hand held ones) allow you to be another 10% on top of that, incase the gun is 10% diff aswell. Therfore a cop with a gun will only stop you @ 36 or over, but not likly. This usually comes into consideration in areas with higher speed limits,

Example, 48 in a 40 and 60 a 50, as far as I know, but dont quote me on that .

Most definately, I agree with McJammy.

In 30s I will stick to 30mph, the most I will creap up to if there is no one around and it is late/early would be around 40mph.


There is one issue with sticking to speed limits, on my way back from Telford last week I was followed along the A5 by a guy in a 4x4, national limits I was loosing him (but he was overtaking like a moron), then there is a small section by Western Park that is a 40 limit. Police have frequently been known to patrol this little section because nearly everyone speeds through it.

All the way through this limited zone the twit in the 4x4 was about a metre from the rear wheel, when I slowed down he started pipping his horn and shouting abuse etc. I find that you get this quite often even in a car when you are sticking to the speed limits, heh, funny there's never any police to witness them overtaking you on a blind bend just before a school entrance eh.

Pretty much stick to 30's and 40's - you never know where there is a school had a child run out in front of me near a school and if I had been going any faster ........

This was one of the questions asked last week at the bikesafe-london course. The traffic divisions general view is that you won't get nicked if you are doing the speed limit + 10% + 3mph.

However if you were doing that up a busy high street or around a school they'll do you. They know bikers go faster then cars, that's why we ride them and as long as people are sensible then they will be flexible.

I believe that 30s and 40s are there for a reason - a lunatic pedestrian could step out in front of you, or a blind cage driver could reverse out of their drive, etc but 50s + I tend to use my judgement on as to how fast I go (weather, traffic, likelihood of getting nicked, etc!)

Not sure. I try to do about 48kph which I think is 30mph.

Everybody here says they do 30 in 30s but why is it that I never see other bikers doing the speed limit in 30s? The ones I see are always going much faster.

Same as everyone else. 30 in a 30, 40 in a 40 then whatever I feel is safe anywhere else.

What about in 20mph zones? Do you obey the limit then? That's when you get the cage drivers really getting pissed off. It's kind of hard to do 20mph without it feeling really stupid. I at least get it down to 25mph anyway.

I have to say the regular commuters I see on my daily ride are indeed doing 30 in the 30's.

The lads on the crotch rockets, however, tend to zip past me and leave me spinning like an upsidown turtle on my shell....

I normally don't get chance to reach 30mph in a 30mph limit. 25mph if I'm lucky, unless it's a real long road, but normally I am just led into a false sense of manlyness, only to be greeted with a new speed zone of 40mph or something, and as I glance down at the speedo which indicates 29mph, I watch cars and indeed pushbikes slide past me as though I am stood still.

don't ride myself, but there is a small town in between two nsl limits and everyone always speeds through them so last summer there was a line of traffic and I was in my brothers car when a silver vectra decided to overtake as there was about a few car lengths gap, as soon as he pulls in he slams on the brakes, too late, as out steps traffic cop from a garden and stops him, so they sometimes do stop cars for speeding

Really depends where it is I guess, however I don't know how fast I'm really going on the VFR.

Following BCF people it seems more like 50 than 30. To work in the morning I'll usually do about an indicated 40ish until I get into the town center, where it drops to filtering speed.

I used to pretty much add 10mph to most limits except for around schools etc. But since I sold the NSR and got a big bike, I ride slower! Maybe it's because I can now make up the time on A-roads etc and don't feel the need to prove myself (or maybe it's age)

I gauge it on the size and location of the road etc. Some 30's are wide!

I just try not to ride like a d1ck without losing that biker spirit more than anything else.

(But I really hate old people who do 30 in 60's )

Pretty much always stick to 30 in 30s and 40 in 40s occasionally find myself creeping upto 5mph over the limit but that usually happens in the car more than on the bike. I actually like it when travelling at 30 mph through villages and holding cars up as they try to go that bit faster then reaching the end of the limit and watching the cars disappear in my mirrors.
I remember Luke commenting on my 'good behaviour' through villages when he and goose followed me home from Doncaster when he came up for Elvington last year.

Try to stick to 30s and 40s (although some of these are now getting very silly). Do I always manage it? No. Am I one of the slowest people in 30 and 40 limits? Yes.

60s and 70s I tend to just go at a fair pace with little regard for the limit. 50s mainly seem to be roads which should have a 60 but where they decided they had to be seen to be doing something.

I try and keep about 35ish though sometimes I have found myself doing 40 and not realised it on a nice flat road. The thing is as stated before that in 30 and 40 zones there will be quite a lot of hazards, children playing, car doors opening on road sides and so on. As for 60 limits I think if you know the road go as fast as you deem safe.

Doesn't matter how fast you go really, always be a car driving nearly on your rear end, I stick to about 33 on 30mph limits, but sometimes go to 35/40 cause of the morons in the cars behind either not understanding what the limit is, or not caring and trying to speed you up dangerously (touching brakes sometimes gives them a clue). Sometimes I ignore them and keep to about 33 though, they should be more considerate though especially if theres speed cams around (when i do stick to the limit)

I Try but i'm far from perfect, i tend to follow the flow of traffic which normally tends to be 10mph above the limit!

I generally do.

Though I have been seen at up to 70 on the speed bumped road to my work... but then I'm not certain there's any restriction signs and it's coming of a derestricted road... so technically that's not much over the limit (don't ya just love soft long travel suspension ).

I definitely try to in the car, doesn't really seem to help much in the car... you'll just catch up with the car infront at the next junction.

I do however use my judgement, for instance some country roads have had their 30s/40s extended quite ridiculously away from the towns they're supposed to be protecting. In the same way I will often go slower through narrower car lined urban roads.
