do you want them?

im talking about ESP, ABS, TC, etc. basically, look at an expensive car that can do the same speed as a bike and it usually got all of those things, let alone cars designed to go quickly, Just look at a evo or a ferari, theyve got so much stuff on them, off the top of my head yaw control.
I know a fair bit about what they all do and practically none of them could transfer to a bike.

But do you want stuff like ABS or traction control on your bike? Its already here in a way, suzki / yamaha ABC modes, ABS on hondas.

Do you prefer just you and your bike, back when carbed bikes were around, or do you prefer all the technical weight saveing big bang engine technology stuff?

I think ABS could have some uses, however on a bike it would still be a lot harder to rely on it. I've wondered about sticking a racelogic unit traction control unit on a bike - should work, I reckon. But again, I'm not sure it'd help in all situations, due to the nature of how bikes work.

Go into a corner too fast for the vehicle in any vehicle and electronic stuff will just mean you've slowed slightly when you hit what you're going to hit!

I want my bike to be as basic as possible, im not even fond of having the electronic start ( there is just something so satisfying about a kick-start ). Good old dials not digital readouts and carbs not FI would adorn my perfect bike.

Definately no way. Hell i won't even buy a modern or new car, as i want my 200bhp+ delivered through the front wheels with all the drama that entails! I have found out that there are ways to get a fwd car set up well and be able to use 250-300bhp if you know what your doing, and have a bit to spend.

With rwd it's even more vital to have no electronic aids IMO, as you need plenty of power to make rwd fun, and then when you have paid out to get a fast rwd car, why would you want to have the potential for silly amounts of fun curtailed by nannying electronic gizmos?

Bike's will have to stop gaining power maybe though, as we are at 170bhp r/w with out of the factory sportsbikes now, and the tyre technology seems to be going into reverse a bit like re-visiting the 1970's!

Hi, i like gizmos. I'd like to have the choice to turn them off tho.
On my perfect bike i'd have a HD monitor with an array of preset 'clock views'. Before my journey i'd select 1 from my touch display, whether its an analog view or dig. I want to check my tyre pressures and alter my preload electronically, same with abs and traction control.
A live traffic update to my onscreen satnav and a quick glance at the rear facing camera view before blasting off Smile

Pat
thats what i'll order after i've won the lottery

+1 Thumbs Up

I like being able to service my own bike without needing a USB connection, and not having to part with a huge amount of cash for a black box with no user serviceable parts inside. Hell, even indicators are optional.

My friend has a klx300r and its about as basic as a bike can be with no indicators, no ignition and a kick-start that only an olympic athlete could operate but im so jealous of its pure bikeness

If you want basic, one of the bikes I've been lusting after recently:

Absolutely nothing that's not needed to make you go/stop as well as possible. While you don't have to be a manly god to start it, if you can use even 75% of what it's capable of, you certainly are one!

Simple is better. On my xr there is lights and horn. No battery or other silly things so nothing to go wrong. Makes fault finding on the electrical system easy. The fireblade sounds like it has to contact bill gates for activation authority before starting judging by the noises it makes when i turn the key.

Went for no.

I could just about handle having abs on a bike, but not out of choice (i.e. only if you could not specify the bike without).

Anything which interfered with the input of my right hand and the power out the back would be enough to stop me buying a bike.

I'm not a moron, I want to be solely responsible for what my bike does (or does not), and am happy to take the consequences should I mess it up.

Hi

ABS is a maybe, the rest not really.

Not sure that traction control could transfer over easily. As far as I know it relies on sensing a change in speed of the front wheels relative to the rear wheels, while with a bike as you bank over you land up on a part of the tyre with a different radius (so the wheels speed up) and with different tyre profiles this change of radius is likely to be different front to back.

All the best

Keith

The racelogic unit can be set to allow certain amounts of slip in front vs rear. Presumably different wheels on the car will be turning at difference speeds - definitely inside to outside in a corner are going to be at a different speed.
With the racelogic unit you can also get quite fancy and set up all sorts of quite detailed 'maps' with a laptop, I believe.

No,

I don't think there's anything that can be done with a bike to improve safety which is anything as effective as paying attenmtion to the road.

No technology will save your bacon if you're doing a 150+ wheelie in the direction of a hedge.

I'd be more nervous knowing that there's a cpu unit that may make decisions for me, becuase I trust myself to get it right.

I think, though, technology could defintely be used to improve the security of bikes. Immobilisers should be standard etc. Really, we should be at the point where you can only steal a bike by carrying it away and even then, all you could do with the bike would be break it, as it would be impossible to get started without the key/ or as password or something....It really should be a case of needing to know a password to get a engine to operate.

I'd be in favour of that, anything which would mean I could park overnight without worry.

Got ABS on the BMW but I turn it off unless it's icy or very wet.

I love the k5 1000 as it has the right amount of gizmos.

Gear counter, decent efi, and digital dials and a slipper clutch (not electronic but I like it).

The power setting thing on the new ones is a nice addition all though rather pointless if you know how to use your throttle.

Traction control is not needed on the road and hardly any one will take advantage of it on the track, its just something to talk about.

But I'm loyal to suzuki and will always love a good Gixxer regardless of tarty bits. (Reckon my next Gixxer will be an RK like Pups)

Could have used it on my zx9 at the beginning of the year when I opened the throttle a little too much going onto a cold roundabout with a really old rear tyre.
I suspect, similarly, quite a few people would take advantage on-track, judging by the number of high and low sides I see caused by just too much throttle Smile.

I think traction control could be a hinderance on a bike. If you are leant over and applying throttle to take you through a corner, and the bike suddenly decides that the back wheel is slipping and cuts the power, isn't that dangerous?

steppen22 wrote:

We have that already in some bikes. Honda's HISS system for instance. And then look at all the shit you're in if the immobiliser breaks or you lose your key!

No substitute for a big fuck-off chain.

I'm not saying technology doesn't have its place. My perfect bike would powered by a fuel cell and an electric motor. But something that does the driving for me? No thanks.

The racelogic system should be a bit more advanced than that.
You can set it up so that it can have up to 20% difference in wheels while keeping smooth power. There are videos of people doing full drifts in cars, while their foot is, I believe, pretty much flat to the floor. The unit controlling how much more the wheels can spin at the back than the front.

Hi

Trouble is the amount of difference you want to allow will vary with lean (and will vary between different makes of the same nominal size tyres) due to the change in rolling radius. Thats before you start to try to factor in the front wheel coming up.

All theb est

What an odd remark to make.

On what basis is tyre technology going backwards?

Confused
