PostPosted: 20:41 - 24 Mar 2009    Post subject: Employment Contracts and Drug Testing Reply with quote

Hi,

In a few months me and many of my mates will be going onto the working world which part of me is quite looking forward to. Im a bit bored of Uni with constant work and 'on your own schedule' type working. Though i know i will miss it as soon as im gone.

Anyways, those of us that have jobs lined up and have contracts though and have been wondering what the deal is with drug testing? Some have been tested already which was mentioned in the interview and they were quite clear about it but others never mentioned anything.

All we're talking about is a bit of weed here and there, nothing major but what I wanted to know is if you have checked though your contract and there is no mention of drug testing at your place of work, can they still test you?

Any good advice/experience etc would be great as we are all a bit unsure at the moment!!

I think that you have to give consent when you sign the contract. I'll ask my other half: she's in charge of this sort of thing at her workplace.

bear in mind also that if you refuse to agree to drug testing you may as well tell them you smoke the occasional weed, if you do agree to testing weed stays in your system for a fair while.

Don't be eating any roasted poppy seed bagels now will you?.

The problem is though if you refuse and you are clean people will still think that you are guilty with the nothing to hide nothing to fear mentality of many people in the UK.

If you are scared , get small hydration pack hell even a hamster watering thing will do , and strap it to the inside of your leg when they do the test , they aren't going to watch while you whizz...

Its how atheletes used to cheat but they would have the bag of clean urine stuffed up their bum to conceal it, which made them change to blood tests instead.

Thanks guys some helpful comments. Yea I know refusing is as good as a positive test but was wondering if there is like a list somewhere with all the companies that test, though that sounds VERY unlikely!!!

In general how many large non-government companies test their employees?

I have never come across a company which does drug testing in my time, and I must have seen a couple of hundred co's, of all sizes.

Don't worry about it.

Drug tested every 4 years as standard with my work, its part of the medical.

Previous work once brought it in, told everyone that it was going to start and those caught out would be sacked unless they admitted in advance.

Out of 800 workers almost 300 put there hands up, cost the company a fortune in providing counselling to try and get them off:lol:

Almost half put their hands up? Jesus. That's... Impressive.
Kinda makes government statistics about drug use look a bit on the contrived side, doesn't it?
I'm afraid that I never got round to asking my SO about the rules, but there should be some mention of it in the employment contract. Do you know anyone that has an active role in any trade unions? They'll be able to tell you straight off.

My work does drug testing, both at the interview stage and at random once employed. I know of one lad who failed the test and didnt get any further whilst applying, they did however give him the chance to come back further down the line and subsequently employed him.

Ive had 5 randoms, all clear. Ive got nothing to hide but theres a large demographic across the site and obviously some people will fail. Its not a flat sacking for testing positive, there are counselling options and a warning. I think they go easier on you if you admit you have a problem.

We also get alcohol tests randomly too.

We also have regular biological samples, which is a right pain. In fact they seem a bit obsessed with piss now I think about it!

I've often wondered, what if you'd been on a recent trip to, say, Amsterdam and undertaken in perfectly legal activities.

Would they then have any right to sack you?

Funnily enough Weed is the one that stays in you longest.

Heavy smokers will still test positive months down the line, especially if you lose any weight (likely if you cut down on the weed).

And yes, I have a friend of mine (coming to the paintballing by the way) who had to leave rather then take the test. The company he worked for had lots of weed, and lots went missing. So they brought it in.

And yeh Nowhere.Elysium, govt figures are hilarious. It's front page news when someone dies on pills, yet I'd wager 0.5-1 million people in the uk were using them every night of the weekend.

What we need are more people like me, who will freely admit drug use to everyone who asks. And explain why. And explain comparisons and knock them down a few pegs.

At the moment I've got my finger in the dyke (ooer Wink) on my own usually.

Winding them up about caffiene addiction/abuse is always a good crack though. I drink tea normally, have done all my life. Start getting up at 6 and doing a shit job, switch to coffee. As does everyone else I've met. It's stimulant abuse, pure and simple.

Sorry - that's about all I got from that statement. I'll have to re-read it when I'm not in a self-righteous rage incited by the Daily Mail about these pill-munching pinko nazis that the nation's becoming... Wink

Seriously, though: I do wish the government would grow up about all this: people ingest chemicals. We've been doing it since the rise of civilisation (probably even earlier than that, truth be told), so why do a bunch of suits feel that they have the moral authority to ostracise the honest among us?

Rant over. Normal programming will continue shortly; sorry for any inconvenience...

A lot of it is to keep the populace subjugated. Like religion but more devisive.

People willing to use drugs either get nicked or ostracised, and the populace (vindicated by years of blatantly false propaganda, most blatant being the 60's american cannabis stuff Shocked) feel that little bit more superior. Whilst distracted from the real issues.

To quote Frankie Boyle...

'LOOK AT THE SHINY SHINY!'

I imaging it depends a lot on the type of work.

Anything where you are responsible, directly or in-directly, for people's safety at work then I would imagine drug testing would be quite common. Pilot, crane driver, drill operator on a rig, working in a foundry etc. And even then it's probably just for insurance purposes.

But general desk-monkey or other work; I don't think they'd bother. More hassle than it's worth.

If I was applying for a 'non-dangerous' job and the company threatened me with drug testing, I'd seriously think twice about carrying on with the application. Do you really want to work for a company that treats it's employees with suspicion and contempt? Sure drugs are illegal, but so is incest. Are they gonna drag my sister in every other week and ask her whether I bummed her, just to make sure I'm not doing anything illegal? Unless either of these activities is adversely affecting my work then it's none of their fucking business.

I don't bum my sister by the way.

It's not incest, don't worry about it. Look on it as an externally-assisted wank.

For us unfortunately yes, its nothing to do with 'law' but more to do with 'company policy'. As long as you are within that company you must adhere to 'its' rules.

I work in the nuclear industry, aswell as what you have mentioned above there is a degree of public relations involved, i.e a headline involving 'Nuclear workers on crack' etc. Laughing

Its not unknown for a random alcohol test to take place and a failed candidate to be passed over to the police because they have commuted to work that morning in their car. Furthermore we have our own gun toting police that have a 10 mile jurisdiction around the site. The even gang up with the local real police to do traffic stops to combat terrorism/tax disc avoision, hence why we whistle the theme tune to police academy when they walk past Laughing

It is a job thats quite hands on and working within a process manufacturing a product which makes me think there will be testing.

That said, it is not a volatile product ie gas/oil as anyone in those fields were openly told drug testing will occur along with alcohol if suspected of being under the influence due to the danger involved.

Cant say I agree, people that freely admit tend to get labelled. I believe that if you do it should be something you do with close friends at raves/nights were everyone is mashed too. Never understood people that drop pills at student nights with lots of their friends around that are just drinking. Neutral

Probably due to insomnia and/or health concerns.

It still remains, most people avoid decaf like the plague.

Oh and Andy, I can see your point, but only that pilling amongst drunk people sucks and ends up with embaressing accounts the next day.

BUT, I never had any fear of being labelled. If someone is spouting bollocks about drugs, be it at work, round my grandparents or wherever, I'll set them straight. Ignorance is the governments tool to keep the public on side to their collossal waste of money.

Also, keeping it some clandestine secret lends credence to the myth that its a taboo. Like swinging, done on the hush and so it's a big deal if/when people find out about it.

I think you're just trying to apologise for your lack of testicular fortitude with rational excuses personally Wink

Not really. I get a stinking headache (which headache tablets have not effect on) from not drinking tea or coffee which is probably caffiene withdrawl (not uncommon). So it is either avoid it or keep myself dosed up. Don't really care about it keeping me awake and can't tell the difference in taste between decaf and normal so easier to just avoid it.

I'd imagine they would. I'm usually conked until I get a coffee in me, and besides it is the expectation of a stimulant effect which drives people to coffee (usually). Whether it is actual or placebo is besides the point, more that they feel they need it to wake up/function.

Fair enough cant all agree eh?

I do agree that miseducation does work on the government's side (herion and MDMA are on the same level and ketamine is so much safer Neutral ) but even if everyone knew about the governments grading system that has no logical reasoning would ever make them fully reclassify/legalise esp while we're best buddies with US with their 'war on drugs'.

Can't say that was the case for me even when I drank normal tea and coffee. 95% of the time it was just something to drink, and coffee is likely to be more drinkable from a machine that tea.

All the best

I used the 'coffee' one on my mum when I smoked a fair bit. Now it's incredibly rare I smoke, I do seem to have got myself addicted to caffeine (in the form of Coke Zero). I'm letting it happen while I'm trying to lose a bit of weight; just hope it's less nasty than tramadol to kick!
