Hi all,
im having problems getting a front sprocket off.
i got the 2 bolts off.
the sprocket & retaining plate are extremely rusty.
it took me about 45mins of repeated spraying with wd40, & tapping away with a punch/screwdriver to actually seperate the plate from the sprocket.
rust had welded them together!
eventually i managed to seperate them & turn the plate & get it off.
but the sprocket wont budge!
& i dont want to damage the shaft.
any ideas?
cheers,
GAZ

I'd soak it again in WD40 and leave it for a bit, then try tapping the sprocket clockwise/anti clockwise to try loosen it up.

It's not totally unknown for some bodgers (a fine breed of men) who, when faced with badly worn output shaft splines, weld the front sprocket on and sell the bike quickly.

hi,
done that bodge maself, lol
but this is a relatively new bike, (2 1/2 yrs old honda cbr125) & its on the original sprocket.
but the bikes been neglected & kept outdoors.
theres rust everywhere, but its mostly surface rust.
the retaining plate thing was welded to the sprocket with rust!
seems a shame to leave the old front sprocket on, when i've changed the rear & put a new chain on.
gonna try soaking it overnight or for a couple of days, with wd40.
cheers,
GAZ

Could you get a set of small bearing pullers on it?

hi,
dont hany kind of puller, so gave up for now.
reckon a good soaking in wd40 might do it, but it gives me an excuse to buy some more plus gas.

The sprocket should slide further down the shaft (when not rusted) so after leaving it soaking wd40 and a quick blow torch on the SPROCKET then get a socket or box spanner that is larger than the output shaft and smack the sprocket ON more ... in the hope that it will free it and then you can clean the splines and pull it off by hand Smile

That would be my first try anyway Smile
