What do you reckon on these machines?

There's one driving round my old town.

I don't like the way that one is being driven as the driver drives it as though on a motorbike weaving in and out of traffic. Personally I think they are too big for this.

They are cool for off road and stunts etc.

Roads I'm not too sure really.

All the down points of a bike, and all the down points of a car!

Open to the elements/danger but you can't filter etc etc

So I'd say for off road/stunts but for general road riding

What licence do you need to ride/drive one on the road?

I have one because I need it for feeding sheep & 101 other farm jobs.

They aren't much fun on the road as they skip about and are too slow. Cornering at speed is not safe.

But on rough or wet land, even towing a trailer, they are great.

Interestingly you don't need a helmet to ride on the road if the rear wheel centres are more than 400mm (18inches) apart - they nearly all are nowadays.

But if you're riding it as part of your work you should wear one to comply with HSE regs.

Actually I'd like to know as someone else round here's letting their 15 y.old son ride one on the road - pretty sure that's gotta be illegal!

you need a car licence as it has 4 wheels i believe.

I'm pretty sure they come under the same class as a car.

Hence, requiring a car driving license. Although don't quote me on that.

I actually did a course with an assessment at the end for quad use, so I have a quad licence! But I don't know if I could use them or the road or not.

They look quite cool. I've only seen one on the roads, I nailed it off a set of lights and M1ke (following) said it did a decent wheelie trying to keep up

All I know is that they stop at the most unnexpected places, nearly rear ended one because his turn off into his little secret farm worker hide out was right round a corner, annoying if you ask me :>

I think they are cool and will be fun on the road. I would love to take one green lane'ing. I saw a group of people out on them last summer and they were doing little tricks like going up on 2 wheels, not a wheelie or stoppie but going onto say the 2 left wheels or right wheels. Looked alot of fun, its annoying you got to have a car licence to use them as the ones i have seen for sale have 100cc scooter engines (motoroma).

I think you should be able to use them on a provisional at 18 or full bike licence.

I believe 4 wheeled vehicles under 400kg can be driven on car licences.

The Yamaha 350cc 'Banshee' sounds quite good, it uses a derivative of the dr350 engine, but people have been known to tune them to over 100hp , impressive.
For stunts they are easier to wheelie/stoppy I believe. Also easier to push over dirt as well I suspect.
However I don't really see much that they can do that bikes can't do better (note, better, not easier).


Oh yea, from what I've heard those 100cc full size ones are a pile of ****. It's only when you get to the decent engine capacities etc that you start to have fun .

This raises a question I've always had about trikes, now further supported by the number of quads seen on the road:-

If a trike or quad meets the criteria for being classed as a car, surely you must have to wear a seatbelt? Conversely, if it qualifies to be ridden on a 'bike licence, you are required to wear a helmet.

How is it then that you see trike/ quad riders with neither a helmet nor wearing a belt, yet not getting pulled by the local boys in blue?

(In mad moments I've often fancied building a quad, based on something like a GSXR thou' or the non-bulbous CBR thou')

You dont need a helmet on a trike and you only need a seat belt if you not sitting on it like a bike ( if you use a car seat you need a seat belt ).

What would happen of you came off a trike or quad on the road? Think about where the back wheels are in relation to where you would fall on the road. Ouch.
