Live to ride ?

Iv noticed over the past year that bikes are beginning to completely rule my life. If i arent riding one i tend to be fixing one or reading about them or on here talking about them.

I seem to have completely given up all my other interests and am fixated by motorbikes. obviously this isnt a balanced outlook on life and i probably should ease off a little before i turn into a bike bore but i was wondering how many more people were dominated by the thought of their next ride?

Could you give up riding tomorrow or would it leave a gaping void in your life?

If I gave up riding, I couldn't go to College etc so yes it would leave a void but not as big as one would think.

I enjoy biking, but as like a lot of Bikers on here I imagine when I'm out I ride to live.

However, ask me this question in five months and you will get a very, very different answer.

I've got seven bikes, have raced various things (and still am in Enduros), done a wide-variety of off-roading, some small 'touring' and a lot of other things.
A hell of a lot of my money is spent on bike-related stuff. In the last two years, I'd say a total of over £40k for bike related is quite possible (some of which I'm still paying off/going to be for quite some time, other which is devaluing 'equity', the rest gone).
I ride a motorbike most days by choice; including through the snowy period earlier this year.
My thoughts are often dominated, maybe not by my next ride, but the next enduro, or buying a trials bike or similar.

However, I wouldn't classify myself as a 'biker' foremost, as many people like to define themselves with.
Bikes are fun and relatively cheap compared to other fun activities.
If I didn't have motorbikes, I might do mountain biking more often (not as fun, but cheap), car drifting, car trackdays. Riding a unicycle, actually, if I my bruised hip can manage it, I might go and ride my unicycle now as I'm not off getting muddy due to a broken exhaust yesterday .

I know what you mean about the thoughts of a new trials bike G.
I started off looking at getting my son an offroader this week and iv so far managed to convince myself i need one too and a van to cart them both around in it seems to be infectious.

Indeed - though do check if you mean trials or trail bikes .
I've had a few vans and car/trailers for bikes over the year - if you've got a car, I'd start of with a trailer and see if you really *need* a van. It's definitely very nice to be able to chuck vans in the back and have that extra legal 10mph on the motorway, however it does end up costing quite a lot through out a year (a coupe of years ago I actually owned two vans for a while for bike stuff, big one and a little one - that was possibly taking it a bit too far!

If you do go for a van, there's quite a good choice of little vans that can handle a couple of bikes and do not too bad mpg. Or, go cheap and functional transits can be got for not much.

It would definitely be an old transit that i went for. We have a transit at work and they feel very much like a car to drive, but i dont think the boss would be over keen on it being covered in mud

The trailer is a very good idea though and one i hadnt considered thats my afternoon planned searching for trailers.

my life depends on bikes. If i'm not fixing, riding, reading about or watching bikes i get really bored. When i got squashed on the xr and i couldn't ride, i tried a different hobby, R/C nitro cars is just as expensive as bikes and a little boring, so i was glad to get back to bikes. I have always had bikes, since i was about 12 i have been almost obsessed with them. But by no means am i a bike hobbit that stays in all the time drooling over the next edition of Bike magazine. (not yet anyway )

It could be worse, i could be like the other 75% of the population and waste all my money paying to watch overpaid puffs kick a ball around a field.

I could quite happily live without, theres times i would rather be out with mates on a sunny day rather than hooning down an A road. But it would be a bore without a car or bike... my life wouldnt be as fun as it is but it wouldnt be dull eithier.

I think it would leave a fair void for myself from the sheer inconvenience to start.

I dont have a license to drive a car as yet.

I could probably do without a bike if I had a car & license, however I would miss biking sorely.

Well over the winter period our Land Rover Disco has filled a gap quite nicely, only thing is now that I'm starting to struggle to find time to sort the bike over fiddling with the Disco. Does still pull at my strings though as I'm under the bonnet twiddling and hear the howls and rumble's of Cat and Fiddle attendee's coming and going

The only time i use the car now is when i go somewhere with my wife ( only because she flatly refuses to get on the bike) and even then i have been known to ride there while she drives there.

Weather doesnt effect my choice of vehicle at all i have just naturally grab one of the bikes on a morning.

I think if I gave up bikes I would miss them sorely from both the fun and convenience aspects. I do also enjoy the spannering aspect.

That said I do have other interests. I was driving for just under 3 years before I started riding and have long been interested in old cars. My interest in bikes hasn't dampeded this and I still love going for a good drive. Cars undoubtedly have practicality benefits over bikes in some circumstances too. It's nice to be able to take friends along for the ride in comfort.

Even then I can't ever see myself spending vast amounts of money on cars or bikes - I'm a bit of a cheapskate and would rather have a larger number of cheap bikes than a single expensive one.

Funny this post is up, i was just thinking today how i havnt been fishing in a while, or done really anything other than work 45 hours a week, drink smoke and ride bikes (not at the same time...).

I could go fishing on a nice summers day and chill out by the lake side with some friends but id rather be riding in a group or even alone, aslong as im sat on a bike i dont really care. I dont have a car license, i have had lessons but i got bored and decided to just stick with the bike for now.

Also since getting the Vmax just over a week ago and with the weather constantly improving i think this summers going to be all about demolishing tyres and spending far too much money on bits i dont really need just to make the bike a little more shiney, whilst telling all my non-biking friends how great the ride i had was....

They dont understand... and really nor do i. But to answer your question yes, it would leave a gaping hole in my life... i dont have a clue what i would do without bikes except be a rather boring tesco employee with a drinking problem...

My bike dominates my life, without the bike I wouldn't have met all the friends I have and I certainly wouldn't have met the love of my life. I go to work and dream of being out on the bike, I only work to keep the bike on the road, oh and I use the money to buy a bit of food lol. I am happiest when out on the bike doing a long run through some beautiful countryside with friends or alone. I certainly couldn't imagine life without my bike.
