Leave denied at work... grounds

Hullo all
Bit of a query for you work wise policy people...
Oh works in the middle east, for weeks on end with no days off. he gets leave every few months for 10-14 days. This July he has 2 weeks off in the middle. We looked online a couple of weeks ago and found a really good deal to WDW Florida. The hotel we wanted, free wdw tickets, bargain! So, we went ahead and booked. Only low deposit £150 (in case anything went wrong with OHs proposed leave schedule). My leave has never been an issue, boss is pretty flexible.
I dropped my leave card off on his desk week before last, but he was off on his hols so picked it up a week ago first thing, Monday 23 March.
Okay, it was stupid of us to book and presume leave, but there you go.

Now chased boss up on the signing of my leave card today, which he seemed reluctant to do. So I pushed him to look at it (it was on his desk). He said I can't have the leave. Reason? He wants the 2 weeks after this and my leave should be the same as his
If I have 2 weeks off then him that is 4 weeks he doesn't see me. Is this right? Has anyone had this where they worked? I have never heard of it. We have other admin staff that could cover surely (forgot to say I am his personal admin assistant).
I can't take the 2 weeks he has as OH is back over there. I don't know what to do now. Kennels are booked for pets, DD is excited. OH said he is not cancelling holiday, so I guess they go without me!!??
I just feel hard done by as manager is dictating the 2 weeks WE have off, so he can accomodate taking his kids away.

I know for a fact my manager hasn't had his leave signed off as it's not on his card or in his calendar. I bet he gets it signed off today.... I asked first! Boo

Anyways, thanks v much in advance. I know I will probably end up losing the hol as I was a berk and booked without checking leave...

I think it depends on whats written in to your contract of employment. I doubt theres anything in there about having to take the same time off as your boss, I don't think that would be allowed...

I'd go over his head, your leave coinciding with his I wouldn't have thought would be a reasonable, ummm, reason for not allowing you the time off.

Oh, that sounds rough

Given that your OH is overseas I would have thought any reasonable person would have seen that you're not in a position to dictate his leave and let you go with it. I've never heard of PA's having to take the same time off before and in the past we've had temps in to cover for the PA's anyway, so it's not as if he'll be left high and dry.

If I was you I'd really push to make sure you get it. Play the OH overseas card, big style

Was told today that a temp is not an option due to ec climate atm.
I tried playing the overseas card, and he knows it's the only 2 weeks we can have.
Doubt v much it is in a contract, it will probably say something like 'all annual leave to be signed by manager if he is agreeable' thus getting roung it. You know what contracts are like!!

Will have to see what tomorrow brings.

All the places I have worked, you ask if you can have particular days off.

You put in a holiday REQUEST, for the days you want.

Often, I will have to fit around other things like when other people have days off, so mine will be different from the ones I originally requested.

I guess it depends on your contract.

I've worked at some places, where people with kids, had preferential treatment on choice of holidays, due to school holidays or not doing so much evening work.

I didnt think this was fair.

Just peed off that he is calling the shots and picking both our leave, but then he is a manager

I'm sure six weeks off with stress will focus his employer/employee relations.

keep badgering him, is he really unable to do his job without you about?

Ask him to set out all next years holidays in advance so that you can book your holidays. Be a professional shit towards him. Start being very cold towards him and keep everything very formal. Do no favours, keep it all as work. Even if he offers you a coffee decline it, then get yourself one. May not work for this time but you can make accountable for the next.

I would do a couple of things.

1) look at what real problems are presented and Create a plan for handovers etc. depending on your actual dates see if you can fit in a meeting (even if weekend) between for handover. Detail how it can work maybe with cover from other p.a's

2) approch the hr department with all the details about the limited leave of oh etc. Also have you joined the union yet ?
