Right, I want to learn how to use a chainsaw effectively and safely. I am probably going to go on a course pretty soon but was wondering if there are any pdf type books online I can read up on.

You'll get a blue book on your first day there, helps to read that in the evenings to be honest.

Best way I can describe on top of 'buy one and use it' is to rest the edge of the base of the enigine case bit (eg.the curved bit of the underside of the red bit on the one in the pic) on the edge of what you are cutting and roll the saw down or up onto whatever you are cutting. It's also not always about doing the whole thing in one go.

You'd have to be an idiot to want to use one without some basic form of training. Simple as that

If nothing else, you won't have a clue about what clothing (chainsaw boots and chainsaw trousers minimum) will give you half a chance of walking away if you make a mistake (and even the pro's do, often) you'll blunt the chain in a matter of minutes, then have no clue why its not cutting right or how to sharpen it properly.

The recommended courses for part time users are offered by Lantra, for professional licences its NPTC https://www.nptc.org.uk/ their website is pretty thorough.

I'm adding to the posts that say education on this is needed, a chainsaw is not a toy, nor is is a tool that is plug and play so to speak.


You can't logically figure out how to use it first like maybe a jigsaw or a angle grinder.


The forces you feel and when are very alien indeed until you are used to it, as is the motion of cutting, especially when completing the cut, and judging how easy it gets how fast on your muscles that were bracing the saw.


Professional tree surgeons actually earn a good wage and it ain't for nothing, they all say its damn strenuous and requires your full concentration and strength at all times, and clinging to a tree for hours is agonizing when holding a saw, let alone forcing it against the cutting surface.



A chainsaw is certainly in my opinion something that should be respected and used in full knowledge of how to deal with any scenario you may encounter using it, which could turn out to be a threat to life and limb very very quickly if you are ignorant.

btw, most modern saws have anti-kickback measures installed. But they don't stop all kickbacks/mistakes
