Anybody had their collarbone plated?

Just wondering if you had the plate removed and how long after it was removed.

The guy who taught me to ride had a plate in his collarbone, his is in for life apparently. It's weird, you can feel the heads of the screws under his skin!

Not sure about collerbone plates .
As far as I know metal work can stay for life but does mean you can't have a MRI scan. It's often removed and usually within 3 years, the longer it's in the harder it can be to remove.
The consultant should be able to advise on pro and con of removal

I've broken my collar bone and still get quite a bit of pain from it at times, it's very weak and i can't lift alot on the one side.

Never heard of collarbone plates though. What do they do?

In most cases metalware is just there to support the bone as it heals and can be removed. In some serious cases it will have to remain. Broken bones heal back stronger than what they used to be, over time. Any weakness in that area is purely down to muscle and can be regained with training, it just depends how commited you are. Muscle deteriorates rapidly when it isn't used, comparing my legs after my crash was astonishing.

Surgeons and doctors in my experience all say different things, some say it's safe to stay and others say it's a liability. Personally, I would (and am) having it removed. A second fracture to the bone with any metalware in there would be extremely complex to fix. Also there's the ongoing comfort issues where it protrudes from the bone into surrounding flesh.

I had an MRI scan on my wrist with metalware in my leg, I guess it depends how far away the subject areas are from each other.

Pain in the fucking ass.

They'll try to plate a collarbone in extreme cases, smashed my right clavicle into around 14 pieces and they wanted to pin/plate it back together (said no and discharged myself, no metal but if standing straight my right shoulder is an inch or two lower and forward to where my left sits).

Never heard of someone having a plate removed from there, it's not exactly a burning topic of conversation though. The doctor certainly gave no indication it would ever be taken out if I had gone ahead with the op.

I fell down the stairs and broke my collar bone when I was younger. Greenstick fracture. Healed now and has a pronounced bump. No lasting effects though.

I could have had my plate removed, but chose to leave it in for the time being as it was causing me no discomfort and the scar had healed nicely.

Think it was around 3 months after I had the choice, the consultant said I could go in and have it arranged to be done whenever in the future, (put that in the notes) as it was a very simple op.

If they offer to plate it then generally you need it done, hell of a lot cheaper for them to let it try to heal naturally.

Can't have an MRI if you have plates/pins etc in you? As far as i am aware, ALL the metalwork they use in you is titanium.

I had several MRI scans when i was in hospital and i have a full length plate on my femur and a full length nail in my tibia.

For the metalwork to be affected by an MRI scan, it would have to contain iron and as you will all know, iron creates rust when it comes in contact with oxygen (and considering your body is something daft like 80% water, you will go rusty very quickly )

No seriously, i believe they have used titanium for quite a number of years now.

There was no mention of having my plate and nail removed (all held in by about 6 screws ) but i am still under my consultant and having regular visits to the fracture clinic as my accident was only last june. So i guess it will be mentioned at a later date. But on saying that, having random banter with the nurses on the ward, i remember them saying that generally they leave them in unless they cause problems. 99% of the time, metalwork will cause discomfort and slightly painful for the first winter and it WILL ache whenever it gets cold (hasn't for me, but i guess thats because im a junky and on shit loads of painkillers). But if problems during cold snaps/winter persists then they will remove them.

Anyway, i don't want mine taking out, because then i won't set off the alarms at the airport . But then again, if i have some ops to get them removed, i get some more (fully paid) time off work

i was told most plates and screws are permanent.

ive got quite a collection going.
> left leg foot long metal pole down the middle of it
> right foot plates and screws
> left wrist screws

i was told if i wanted, the pole would get removed, but that involves cutting into my knee. dont really want that again.

the plates and screws i was told are only removed if they start to cause problems.

if you really want them out, say its causing pain.
if not its a private surgery job.

the one in my foot is causing a few problems, so i might give you an answer pretty soon.

I already have a stainless plate on my femur and did have a stainless rod but got it removed,they couldn't remove the plate because the bone had grown over it.I am now waiting for an op on my clavicle which i have broken before but this time apparently it's worse,been in 3 times but got bumped for emergencies,not good,thanks for the info.
