I usually give other bikers coming the other way a nod to say 'hello' but what if you want to warn them of plod ahead? Or other types of warning? How do you signal this without confusing the other biker?

I think the old school warning is holding your hand above your head and opening and closing it, like a flashing siren or whatever.

That looks a bit mental though, and nobody ever gets it. I'd flash my lights.

usually a up and down flat palm motion will do it! or a flash of the lights! from past experience it seems to work?

a hand on top of the head making a sort of siren shape works aswell i find! Very Happy

I tend to flash my lights, and do the flat palm up and down movement - no-one's thought I was calling them a wanker yet.

A couple of months ago me and misstit were going into the city in her smart car.On the left hand side of the road was a scamera van,no problem went past it doing the nsl.Just after that there is a slight right hand bend,as we came round it coming towards us overtaking on our side of the road was some sort of chavhatch. As a warning to the driver i flashed my lights repeatedly. This seemed to upset the driver, because as he got level with me,without slowing down or taking his hand off the steering wheel he gave me the finger.Just as he got into the range of the scamera van! I nearly died laughing, imagine what the photo was like on the NIP! He must've been doing at least 80 and it would have looked like he was giving the cameraman the finger. PS if you were that driver, hard fucking luck! i guess you'll have to pay for your own arragence and stupidity.

Flash lights or take my right hand off and either do thumbs down or move my palm up and down.

I pat the top of my helmet with the palm of my hand, as if to imitate a flashing light on a roof, normally works. Also normally flash the lights or point the direction they're in.

If the scamera van was pointing in the direction you were travelling it wouldn't have caught anyone going in the opposite direction anyway would it?

Thumb down is the universal "speed trap ahead" warning for both Bikers and lorry drivers, has been for as long as I can remember.

Tbh, if I get anything other than a nod (or no nod), then I assume bad things are around the corner.

Some can take pics going both ways, yes.

My 'sign' is thumbs down - generally if someone makes a gesture other than a nod or wave I'd be suspicious and slow down just in case.

Patting the air with your right hand is the signal of choice
in Yorkshire.

Never seen anything else to be honest.

Was on the motorway a few weeks ago and saw scamera ahead.
I beeped my horn and patted the air, I have never seen a car driver so grateful. He waved, thanked me with his lights repeatedly , even again a mile or so later.

I pat the air with my right hand as well, and it always gives me a nice feeling that I may just have saved a few motorists from getting fined/points. In the car I'll flash and/or indicate with my hand too.

Only wish others would have done it for me sometimes in the past! Smile

Don't know about everyone else, but I'm warning them to slow down because they are approaching an accident blackspot. Stands to reason, if there is a camera there it must be an accident blackspot. They are for our safety to make us slow down in danger areas and not to earn revenue.

I usually signal by means of the universally accepted "thumbs down" Thumbs Down but if they are RIGHT on top of it I do the frantically waved up and down arm movement as if doing a slowing down handsignal.

Used to wave my arm downwards to tell them to slow but I find tapping the top of my lid works fairly well or at least made a couple of bikers slow before the trap Thumbs Up

Bonny got done by one like this recently.

I either do thumbs down, arm waved for 'slow down' or finger/hand spinning in air for 'blues and twos' style copy.

Randomly enough I've not passed a mobile scamera when on the bike, yet (and it isn't cos I didn't notice Shocked ), but I did flash the car lights at a couple of bikers messing about on the Harbour road last week as there was a van parked up (sunny Tuesday lunchtimes are particularly dangerous Rolling Eyes ) I think they thought I was 'telling' them off and I half expected them to turn round and chase after me! Fortunately I think they were both WTF and slowed enough anyway - numpties! Rolling Eyes

.......if it was anyone on here, lovely numpties!

This is the way to do it.

The tapping the top of your head is a US thing.

I think his point is the fact that there is a possibility that you may get done for warning others of the van's presence??
