Speed cameras are more rewarding to the government than common sense procedure.

No prison becoz of his age?? WTF?? He killed a man. He killed him with reckless driving and total disregard for the safety of other road users by driving with shite eye sight.

This is a real tough one.

On the one hand you want to punish the driver but on the other, what with his age, what would be adequate.

This has been a failing of legislation and procedure, as said in the report, older drivers should have to take an eye test and general medical every couple of years past say; 60 years old?

At that age the chances are there in and out of the Doc's office once or twice a year and I was speakingt a friend today who said Boot's already insist that people who use contacts come in for a check up (or whatever its called) every couple of years. (Apparently they have to do it for professional audit purposes or something.)

Basically all the right things are in place, they just need to be exercised.

That said, when stuck behind a car dawdling along at 35mph (regardless of the conditions) seeming to be driven only by a flat cap... If you had a bazooka, you'd be hard pushed not to use it...

Thumbs Up

Down to failing to modify the licencing procedure for old drivers most probably because there's not a lot of money in it (with regular retesting I imagine a lot of old drivers would just not bother and so not pay). Old drivers who can't see or just can't think fast enough are a big problem, not just because it causes accidents but because they hold up traffic and indirectly cause accidents when they piss about on the road.

HGV drivers are required to take regular medicals after a certain age (50 I believe) and so should car drivers, you can kill just as many people with a car as you can a truck. It's kind of shocking they honestly think he's safe to hold a licence again at 98 following a re-test, he's failed to stop driving already or declare his seriously defective eyesight so would he act on any issues in the future, unlikely. Thankfully he'll probably fail the driving test but drivers who don't kill someone will slip the net until either they do or their vision recedes so much that they can no longer find their car in the first place.

Agreed.

It seems at the moment, the test for old people and whether they're safe to be on the road is a practical one taken on the road in amongst it all.

Namely, they only get flagged if they cause or have an accident or at worst; kill someone.

Not an acceptable state of affairs...

Thumbs Up (Or in this case Thumbs Down )

This is utterly sickening. That's the second post I've read today about accidents/near accidents caused by old people because they're either blind or not paying attention. Yet they more or less get away with it just because they're old. There definitely needs to be some sort of repeat testing structure in place for older drivers.

This sounds to be the same trouble I had with my driving test, though, thank god, I was in a car.

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/norfolk/7390082.stm

The guy was so bloody arrogent.

Quote:
Taylor declined the chance to sit a driver improvement course - because he felt his driving was "not bad".

In a statement, he told the court: "Unfortunately my judgement was faulty. There was an accident."

Twat pulled accross a dual carridge way and hit my drivers door while I was going about 60.

He got 6 points and a £300 fine.

I've still got back problems over a year later.

read this the other day. Its sad. I wish they would have some sort of medical and a re test for over a certain age group. And even my own granddad I say that for as he cut me up on a round about one day and didnt even see me. Confused his vision is fine but he didnt bloody see me and could have flattened me. This guy killed someone and got off lightly , seems ok to kill bikers. Had this argument before on this site.

Retest for ALL every 5 years. This should improve some of the shockingly poor driving you see, makes sure you are upto date with laws, weeds out the infirm and doddery.

This theory is all good untill one of the infirm or doddgery plow into your car and due to lack of seatbelt kill you aswell, nice plan.

its a lot easier to kill people if you have many more tonnes at your disposal

thats why standards are higher for truck drivers

Having said that I think medicals, eye tests, re-tests should be considered for old people.

A simple one would be that everyone has to get an eye test at 60, and if they dont pass it when wearing glasses or contact lenses, they should have their license revoked until they get new glasses or contact lenses.

If they still arent able to see the equivalent of a number plate from whatever distance its done on a car test, they should lose their license.

People are used to getting eye tests anyway, and it doesnt put a strain on doctors, so I think this would be a good first step.

Thanks i'm quite aware of the governments reasons for making HGV licencing more strict, however that isn't my point. My point is that you can kill just as many people using a car not that it's easier to, the potential is there.

There is also a far greater number of cars on the road than trucks and with the outrageous variation in car driver skill they represent the largest majority of crashes so to ignore car licencing goes against the governments ultimate plan of achieving a zero death rate on the roads.

When I pick up any new pupil no matter what their age I always do a quick eye test ( the same one as you would do at the beginning of a driving test) It is amazing that so many people of All ages have poor eyesight and not realise it. Many a time i have had to refuse a lesson until they have got their eyes sorted.

I get my eyes tested every year, all is ok so far, and I think everyone should do the same.

Considering that photo licences have to be updated every 10 years, it would not be hard (and a nice money spinner for opticians Laughing ) that you had to submit for a eye test and get a certificate to go back with the picture.
This could then be expanded to a retest of the theory, to make sure ALL are upto date on new sign's and regulations.

I can live with the old and slow, its the too fast that cause far more problems......

The thing is, part of the national standard in terms of eye testing and prescriptions is that people are reassessed annually so the eye tests should already be happening.

My pal is 40 this year and has been told he needs to go back for a yearly test to make sure his contacts remain useful.

Thumbs Up
