Sore Gums =( - Advice

Ive been on the phone to the NHS most of the morning trying to find a place that will take me for emergency checks.
Going back over a month I went to the Uni to have a wisdom tooth taken out. But it was too decayed and compacted - He didnt want to touch it Told me to go to a private dentist to have it removed (Costing me £90)
Im unsure what the difference is between Uni (fully qualified dentist) and a private dentist except private charge!

Well, as im unemployed I cant cough up £90 so he covered the wisdom tooth with some paste which is still there and stops the pain.

However, now this is the problem I've been getting for about 3 weeks.
One morning the gum that sits above your two front teeth are extreamly tender - Even just gently pushing the gum with my finger it hurt that bad (front and back of gum)
The front isnt so sore now but the back it - also bottom inside gum where the teeth sit bleed heavily when I brush my teeth.
The front bottom bleed and my two (fangs as I call them) bleed underneath. Its quiet a bit of blood that I loose.
So I look and find this 'Gingivitis' could be possible - there sore/bleed - I can just suck on my gum like you would a sweet and withdraw blood, pinch the gum and I withdraw blood.
I was explaining to the nurse what can I do to stop/cure and she was saying the more they bleed the more I must brush
Its about getting rid of all the bacteria - tonight ill buy some mouthwash see reccomened.
as anyone had this? Sometimes I could just rip my teeth out because they ach ala lotost of the times.
Untill I get £90 or wait for a NHS place (June) I am going to be struggle - Im 25 and I dont want to loose my teeth!!!!
Ive not been the best at oral hygien and I do have a 'clean' planned asap but I do brush twice daily.

You do need to brush quite hard to have the desired effect. Painful at first but it does work.

I use Retardex toothpaste and mouthwash - expensive at about £5+ a tube and £8 per 500ml bottle but very good.

Ive been told to use 'Chlorhexidine' altho I could only find colgate stuff called Chlorhex' but had Chlorhexidine in.
Just a bit worried as they do get painfull when brushing - really sensitive right now & if i do have this Gingivitis I need to keep it at bay untill I can afford a 'clean' with a dentist.

Get up the duff, then your dental treatment is free.

Chlorhexidine mouthwash is good for treatment of gingivitis (which is latin for swelling of the gums). One of the brand names is corsodyl which is the most foul tasting stuff ever invented.

There is a slightly more pleasant, hydrogen peroxide based mouthwash that is supposed to be very effective called peroxyl.

Depends what is causing it in the first place. If you have a lot of tartar, it wont shift until a dentist scales and polishes your teeth. If it is just due to chronic poor oral hygeine, then the mouthwash can help.

If the inside of your mouth is ulcerated, you might have picked up cold sores (herpes simplex virus) from somewhere. If you've never had the virus before, it can leave you in a right state first time it flares up. If this is the problem, speak to the quack about it.

I thought gargling salty water 3 times a day was supposed to be good for things like this?

Doubt it'd do any harm and it won't cost much to try, even if its doesn't resolve it, just don't swallow it!!!!

The Retardex looks like water and doesn't have much of a taste at all.

A sachet of mint flavouring is included so you can make it minty if you want to but I've heard its not nice.

Pay money to get a wisdom tooth removed? I had both sides removed at a hospital without handing over any cash.

What you do is complain of severe crippling agonising pain , and go get the dental surgery at a hospital , treatment in Hospitals is paid for by your previously paid taxes.

Seems you have 2 complaints;

1) You said something about your wisdom teeth being badly decayed and compacted (I think you mean Impacted) so chances are the reason they said to go get them removed outwith the Dental Hospital is that they think you may require a surgical extraction. Not entirely sure why they decided that it was better to try and out-source this, but it may have been because their waiting lists are already pretty full (I know the ones here can be booked up to 18months in advance in some cases!) with more anxious/medically compromised patients and if yours is to be done then it would probably get done a lot faster in practice. On the other hand, it could be that they are not obliged to just offer you treatment in the hospital if you come in as an emergency. They are obliged to treat your pain, but if you are not seen as a suitable candidate for either teaching or more complicated treatment then they will ask you to seek your own treatment elsewhere. My advise on this one would be to phone around a good handful of NHS practices and see if they will take you on (but bear in mind that even in an NHS practice it's still going to cost you around the £50+ mark depending on what needs done!).

2) Second problem sounds like it could be a form of gingivitis/periodontitis - there are several different types and severities which I will only bore you with if I go into. Suffice to say, the advice that people have given is somewhat true, but there are certain standard types of treatment depending on which type of disease you have. For example, if it were a more aggressive type (characterised by pain like someone stabbing pins into your gums along with the bits inbetween your teeth going grey and foul tastes/smells coming from them) then you could well need a course of antibiotics on top of (most probably) Corsodyl Mouthwash (or another Chlorhexidine based M/W) and a good scale and polish done under local anaesthetic (well you would probably try and punch the dentist if they tried doing it without it - it's that painful with this condition!).

Anyway to sum up, as with every situation, there are loads of factors which need to be taken into account when dealing with any problem so I would say get yourself to a dentist ASAP before things get worse (esp with your wisdom teeth)! I would also not be too hung up about the fact that your dental hospital didn't provide you with treatment too - they have to work to guidelines, and if you fell outwith them then it's hardly their fault.

You live in Portsmouth dont you ? Try looking up the Poswillo clinic in the phone book. They are at QA Hosp, and should be able help with people who need immediate dental care but havent got (or cannot afford) a dentist. Dunno if they can help, but cant hurt to call
