TALKING lampposts which dish out a stern telling-off to anyone caught misbehaving have been unveiled as the latest weapon in the war against crime.

The scheme in Stalybridge will soon keep a watchful eye over thousands of young revellers who pour into the town centre every Friday and Saturday night.

Speakers fixed to CCTV cameras will allow operators based at Tameside Council’s control room in Ashton to bellow messages warning trouble-makers they are being watched.

Cabinet deputy Councillor John Taylor admits some may be alarmed by the ‘Big Brother’ tactics but insists most people will have nothing to fear.

"It is a little bit more invasive and I accept the suggestion 100 per cent," he said.

"But in my experience, big brothers are there to look after you and make sure you’re safe.

They have these in Northampton town centre; when I was in town Tuesday there were a number of announcements, telling people that littering is a crime punishable by death and why don't you use one of the town's 150 litter bins, and telling cyclists that "this is a pedestrian zone and cycling is an offence, please dismount".

You can walk from one side of Northampton to the other and never be out of view of CCTV. I understand that people come from all over the world to see the setup. Nice to know my council tax is being well spent, and I'm safe from those pesky cycling litterbugs.

Every email stored.....cant see it i sometimes send emails with over 200mb of files in them each month. So if 2000 people do the same thats 400000mb for a year if 20000 do the same thats 4000000mb if we all did it twice a month ..... well you can see where im heading there wouldnt be the space or the funds to implement it.
