Any suggestion for a chipped knuckle ?

I do an exercise glass called boxercise, where you punch focus pads while wearing pad mitts. You can punch pretty hard without hurting yourself.

Sometimes I play football at a gym, and then go upstairs to use the facilities.

A few weeks ago, I did this, and hit the punch bag with no gloves on, as hard as i would hit a focus pad while wearing pad mitts.

It fucking hurt, but I didnt think much about it at the time.

I have since noticed that I have a slight spot of pain on my middle knuckle. I had just thought it was a bruise, but i have now realised, that I can actually move something about under the skin.

I think I may have chipped a bit of my knuckle or something.

The moveable bit is about the size and shape of a squashed pea.

Has anyone had anything like this before ? I know nutter luke off here had moveable bits around his eye socket or something, and I have a feeling moving them around didnt do him too many favours.

I guess I should stop hitting things for a while, but should I think about making sure the bit of bone is in the right place, and it doesnt just free float forever, and does knit back together ?

Or will it be ok just to leave it ?

It doesnt really hurt, just a very slight pain if you touch a certain bit, although it does hurt more, if you move the squashed pea type thing about.

First of all you are bloody stupid for punching the bag without and protection like mits, gloves or even handwraps.

Get yourself to the docs and see wat he says. it wont heal on its own. Get a referal to the hospital to get it x-rayed.
They may cut you open and remove the possible floating piece of bone. Then you will have to wear a finger brace for about 6 weeks.

It could be any number of things. If it was a chunk of bone, you'd know about it: you'd have trouble moving your finger, for starters.
Go see a doctor about it. You may have damaged the cartilage that sits between the bones in your hand, hence the mobile bit.
Whatever you do, stop fiddling with it until a doctor gives you the all clear.
I have hypermobile joints (all of them), and the one things that I've learned (and yes, it was the hard way) is that if it's hurting, and moves in a funnier direction than usual, leave it be 'til it's been checked.

I wanted advice from people who had experienced the thing I have.

Someone has, and told me what happened.

Everyone else just gave me their opinions.

Opinions are ok, but actual experience of the thing tends to be a bit more useful.

And yeah, I dont want the hassle of going to a doctor who may do more harm than good.

As it turned out, after I posted this thread, someone at work also had experience of floating boney bits, that then settled down and no problems since.

If the movey thing doesnt stop moving after a month or so, I may take up the advice of the opinion people and go see a doctor, but I really dont think its that serious and doctors for all there training and good intentions often to more harm than good with minor things.

I did think about going to the Dr's - Altho I could move my hand/fingers freely it was just plain annoying it sitting there.
I think after two weeks I started to moan at the OH how I got slightly worried it could be a bit of bone just floating around (I did punch a solid object hard)
But she said that someone at work used to do boxing and he said the same thing.
It will die down soon enough

Ive had this, used to be well into boxing. Theres nothing that can really be done, apart from ice, if its that painful/swollen and rest. Time is the best healer. I was in the same situation as you, but beleive it or not i had wraps and gloves on and still had it (hit hard you see ). On a serious note, its about a year later now, and i can still move whatevers underneath the skin, but its not so painfull. Also,whatever you do dont hit walls bare fisted, or any other surfaces like that. Doesnt do your hands . Mend well.

iv cracked and chipped my knuckle on my right hand so many times it now has a big lump on it thats formed like a callus.

first time it cracked, I went to the doctor and he said it will heal itself just takes time.. Shortly after it did in its own time.

In january i hit something again and i had a loose chunk also floating about, after a few weeks it sort of went on its own.

basically give it time and it will be fine from my experience

I had this after punching a wall (was either the wall, my ex or my best mate of the time) - had one knuckle that I could move around and it wouldn't spring back. It didn't hurt, and it went away after a month or so.

I'd be inclined to have a little dig with a sharp needle...but I wouldn't advise you to do the same. Rub a little witch hazel onto it, and it might go away...if it doesn't actually hurt I wouldn't bother going to the doctor with it.

I think it seems ok now, but I'm not going to try too hard to move it around, just in case its starting to bind together, and i dislodge it.

I'm not going to be doing any boxercise stuff this week, and then I'll go back to doing it next week, and just be quite gentle with my right hand.

Safe to say, I will be leaving punch bags alone for a long while, and be sticking to pads and focus pads just to be on the safe side.
