Do you have any friends that can play? If not, it might be worth paying for a couple of lessons, just to get over the initial hump and learn the basics.
https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/ has a good selection of lessons, you may find one there that piques your interest.
There is no substitute for practice. You are aiming to build up muscle memory, so that you don't have to think about where your fingers go, they just know. You may think "Kumbaya" and "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" are for 5 year old lamers, but they do their job.
If you haven't got it already, download (or buy) Guitar for Dummies, and work through the exercises :-

You may find this tune boring, but it'll get your chord changes and strumming sorted.
[edit] It's not dodgy scat porn, honest. It really is a song, by Andy Fairweather Low. I just had to zip it as you can't attach MP3s greater than 5MB ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

2. Buy the best equipment you can afford - a cheap guitar will sound crap regardless of how good the player is.

Hmmm not sure I'd agree with that, my first guitar was some shitty squire stratocaster that I probaly couldnt sell for £20 if I tried, but I still use it and it sounds pretty damn good in drop C tuning much to my surprise, as well as producing a nice tone when sweep-picking.
Then again I'd say buy a decent amp because that;s really where the magic happens for most humble guitar folk.
