Newsgroups.

I'm looking into using newsgroups to download music/movies instead of the increasingly frustrating torrents.

Anyone have any recommendations as to which group is best, cost and d/l limits etc.

I'll third all of the above, though I tend to use GrabIt instead of Newsleecher.

Giganews is an expensive server but the retention is phenomenal and the files rarely need repairing so its money well spent.

I'll also send Newzbin invites if they're needed.

I use Astraweb

Its more like a pay as you go version. Instead of paying £xx monthly and downloading what you feel like, you buy download amount (125gig for $25) etc, and this lasts until you use it up.

I don't download much, so this lasts me for months before I need to 'top up' again.

yep agree with you both, no good for heavy users like you two are.

myself though, I maybe download a film or two, maybe a game or some program per week at most. This is only going to be 3-4gig. making the 120gig last me 30weeks

Obviously, there are some weeks when I will download 10-20 gig, but that's not very often.


As said by most above, if you wish to download loads, then ignore my post, however if you just want the odd item, and don't want to wait for torrent speeds, then it is a good alternative to the monthly payments.

Just wanted to say thanks to phantomtek, he sorted me out with an invite and now I'm downloading faster than ever! Can't beleived I put up with torrents for so long lol!

Can't recommend newzbin highly enough. They are the guys who developped the format and they have a real understanding of the technology.
I highly recommend HellaNzB for downloading too.

I signed up with Newsdemon ages ago for a one-month service, just to see what it was like. That was about a year ago and it's still live, and pretty good too. Newsleecher and Supersearch for finding stuff.

2,700gb is v v easily done, after all thats only about 7.4 gig per day. 1 xbox360 game is 8.5 gig ish so one game a day no worries plus all the hd movies and dvds etc etc
