Give a kid a plate of cabbage and sprouts and see what happens.

We just give our daughter what we eat, works pretty well.

She even eats chilli and curry. Not crazy spicy, but it does have a bit of a kick!

As far as I can make out (although my experience doesn't leave me with any cooking for children) there are two main ways to introduce foods to children.

1) Food they eat normally, such as chicken breast. Show them it during preparation so they see it going in, then afterwards use the old favourite 'it's just like normal just a bit different'

2) completley new everything, insist they try

Have no idea what sort of foods you would eat but I'll suggest a few I can think of in my 'home from the pub' state

Anyway, I'd suggest just adding things to veg/gravy, like if you boil some new potatoes, cut them in half and roast them for 10 minutes with garlic+rosemary+thyme, or make block fondants instead of chips. You can make exceptionally tasty veg by cooking lentils/beans in 3-1 water-white wine, with a dash of vinegar, and adding finely shredded cabbage and a pinch of sugar at the end, thickens up to consistancy of risotto.

Risotto itself is a good one, can pretty much chuck any componants or flavours you want in.

I'll write some more tomoro

Exactly the kind of thing i want to try them with, something a bit spicier more out of the ordinary. I think one of your chillies could blow their heads clean off though Very Happy

Fantastic ideas pyro thanks very much. Im going for the completely new everything approach so want to get as many new flavours past them while i can keep them interested, keep em coming Thumbs Up

My grandma was Chinese, so we had all sorts of different (then) food, but one of the ones that used to have my school friends laughing was sweet and sour fishfingers! Mum used to make a sweet and sour sauce, boil some rice, then pop the fishfingers on top and pour over sauce!

I've a handwritten 'Mum recipe' somewhere for spicy sausages that is chipolatas with a tabasco and everything else in the cupboard sauce - bung it all together and into the oven - we loved it!

If I was you I'd see if they fancied helping you make some sushi - still has me fascinated Embarassed

Note this was before you could buy any of this stuff ready made and getting anything 'foreign' was a major shopping expedition to Romford or Luton Laughing

Kind of along the oriental theme, I think Udon noodles are the bizz and look just like worms - perfect for kids imo! This one is like the Wagamama recipe.....

If you involve them in the preparation/cooking they may be more receptive to new things.

We make pizzas with our kids with a plain base, tomato puree, cheese then whatever they want on top, shove it in the oven for 10 mins, jobs a goodun. Get them to grate the cheese and sprinkle whatever stuff they want over it all. It's quite cheap - Tesco do 'value' bases that are quite big and not bad.

Come on then Mr Wizzzard, what did the kids have for tea? Laughing

I'm guessing if it was one of Mr 1930 Ariel's chilli wonders, you're still giving them pints of juice to cool 'em down!! Cool

Fajitas? It's 'build your own' fun food, with chicken, salsa, sour cream, veg, salad, cheese all in bowls and they dig in with the tortilla wraps.

Or home-made egg fried rice - they can pick what they want in it, cooked chicken, ham, prawns, peas, other stuff. Use cold cooked rice, hot oil and quick active cooking for best results. Light soy and splash of seasame oil make it kickass. You can also spice it up with a good pince of cayenne or chilli powder.

Bag o' prawn crackers, and Robert's your Mother's Brother! Very Happy

Normally Josh eats what folks eat - He likes pizza alot at the moment.
How old are they?
Josh is almost 5 he likes to watch 'Big cook little cook' and try to cook what they do on the program.
If there old get some hands on recipes - a child helping will make them want to eat the meal - Or Josh dose anyway Thumbs Up

Stuff that they can help with like wraps and samosas, kids love playing with food. You can also but all sorts in a samosa and they'll eat it because they made it.

My faves:-

1 x roll of ready made filo pastry
some feta cheese
some spinach.. deep fried MMmm!

Monkeypit - my Guides made samosas and despite starting the night having no idea what they were, they all went home having eaten one and desperate to eat their second Thumbs Up
We made plain veggie samosas with potatoes, peas, onions and spices.

The other thing that went down pretty well was making fajitas (already mentioned) and salsa from scratch, even if the question "what's this little purple thing? Is it a chilli?" made me cringe Smile (and the fact that only one of 20 knew how to use a tin opener)

We got them to eat haggis on Burns night - now *that* took some genius white lies and lots of persuading and bullying ("What's the matter with you? It's only sausage with some oats in it! Stop being such a big wuss, we'll send you back to Brownies...")
