Agree.

There is the tax credit and benefits system, but they are so complicated and convoluted that most don't get what they should. It seems that unless you were born into the wellfare state benefit system getting anything out of it is near impossible.
there are some who live a very good life within the system, but there are many more, for which the system was set up for, who don't.

The system should be simplified, Those on it, no matter for what reason, should justify why they are on it. It is an ass that a 21 year old male who has never worked, never will either, does drink, drugs and petty crime should have a roof put over his head and money put in his pocket more than a guy who has put 20 years into the system, has been made redundant, has two kids and a wife, who is actively seeking employment, but just wants/needs that little helping hand to tide him over until he is back in work again.
That is what is wrong with this country.

Exactly why we should concentrate on our own matters before piling money into Africa.

Was watching a programme on Ch4 last night called "The Hospital". A doctor on there summed up our society perfectly when she said that there is a distinct under-class in our society now, that is bereft of respect, or any moral compass. Throwing money at the situation wont make it better, wholesale societal change will.

Also what was interesting was that back in the 90's doctors used to race wheelchairs through A+E, now they are dealing with drunks who are piling pressure on those that really need the help.

Our country is going down the shitter.

No it isn't. What is wrong with this country (one of the things, and a pretty huge thing) is that the guy who has put 20 years into the system is expected to work his guts out for a pittance, have most of it robbed in taxes and then see criminal filth like the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith thieve tens of thousands of it for herself, and the MoD spend £250,000 of it for three pictures to hang on the walls of their offices. Etc etc etc ad-infinitum.

'How they squander our billions', CH4 a couple of weeks ago.

They take BILLIONS of our money and piss it up the wall on utter shite. And all the parasite hyenas in the house of commons, de-frauding MILLIONS of it for direct personal gain. While running the country for the benefit of the few (corporations) and being given big fat consultancy jobs after they leave office (the payoff for their corruption).

THAT'S what's wrong with this country. While 13 million are living in poverty we have vermin like Jacqui Smith gorging at the trough.

Yes it is when you are talking about the poverty line.
If you want to talk about the abuse of another system, then another thread would be needed, but you have opened this thread with the subject of poverty, not the MP's abuse of allowances. But there again all your rants lead to the same thing.

You said "that's what's wrong with this country". I countered that, and qualified the counter.

If you can't even understand the formal rules of debate you shouldn't attempt to engage in them.

Its a damning indictment.

Also true that throwing money at the problem won't work.

I had a theory about this from ages ago. This lack of respect comes from a inate mistrust that has developed over the past few years, a lack of hope and ambition.

At the risk of more government bashing, I think there has been a trickle down effect over the past decade. We have been lied to, had stories spun on a scale never before seen. Ok, it might be that in the past the press weren't so good at unearthing the spin stories or didn't want to...

But when you think about it, the tories' time in office was stamped by sleaze. New labour's time is rubber stamped by 'spin.' I think that adults (mothers and fathers) working or not have been lied to, spun at for so long, they have no trust in the government and its trickling down the generations.

Kids see their parents growsing over the dinner table (or over hear them at night talking about bills bills bills and tax tax tax...) No one can help but be open to the drip feed of stories, Jacqui Smith and her husband's film viewing pleasure... How could we not become cynical about the ruling government.

Britain has turned into a Buy to Let society. We live in expensive hamster balls were our main overriding concern is servicing the tax we need to pay to just exist! Never mind all the other things you need, insurance if you drive, money to get to work, all the other panopoly of things we are told we need, broadband, digital tv et al...

Mortgages, electricity, gas, council tax, income tax... All of it seems designed to keep us in a perpetual state of catch-up.

This government talks about social mobility, Balls! They want us in penury, continually striving to survive on a month to month basis. I don't go for all this NWO stuff, however; I do believe if a society is left with few options, but just enough to think they're getting by, its a great way to maintain order...

I can't claim to live in poverty, but if I lost my job tomorrow, I'd be homeless within 30 days. Its a climate fear, fear of bailliffs, fear of failure, fear of not keeing up with the next door neighbours and fear of not being able to provide.

So much these days is driven by fear and that is not right.

Thumbs Up

I have lived on the poverty line for the last three years, mostly because of the minimum wage.Nobody gives me expenses or a fucking John Lewis list it really annoys me that these politicians can decide how much i need to live on and the cream everything off for themselves. They don't see anything wrong with it all either.

I get confused by the whole system.
When I was working full time (and part time before that) I was getting tax credits - this making my life a little bit easyer to live -
Now im out of a job they seem to think that £50 a week is enough for one adult and one child to live on?
Again I get confused and more then likely missed the point of something but it dose piss me off!

No not really, just know a fake when I see one.

No one really follows the rules on Monopoly anyway, but I bet you always want to be the banker. Rolling Eyes

Judging by most of the piffle you write it's clear you barely know yourself (quite common with low-IQ people), so how you can claim to know anybody else is a source of extreme amusement to me.

You're a well-conditioned slave, just accept that fact and move along.

But the politicians can have the mortgages paid for by the tax-payer on their second homes.

Sweet little ramp the parasites have going for them, ain't it?

Thought i'd add my little angle to this.

I didnt have a choice but to move out of home about 6 months ago, currently im working part-time 30 hours a week, it brings me in a very small ~£550 a month after tax, my rent is £390 including bills, the government outright refused me any help at all, Im looking for full time work but i've been unsuccessfull so far, my own fault really since my only experience is retail.

Any way apperently i work too many hours(the limit being 13) and my rent is too high to use for thier calculations because of my age the limit is £350. Bullshit, apperently because im only 19 i should be able to get money from my parents to help me out, sorry we dont all live in a perfect world!

So, now im left with £150 to buy food pay petrol and all other costs for the rest of the month, obviously thats not enough to live on, let alone live comfortably.

To top it off i've been told that if i didnt work at all i would get more money overall than what i get from working at the moment, not much incentive to work there then is there?

So thanks to the no good government i'd say i am well and truely living on the poverty line, thanks Mr.Brown, enjoy your second home Middle Finger Middle Finger

Oh, he'll enjoy his second home alright, bought and paid for by the tax-paying public. Then he'll enjoy the fat-salaried job he'll be given by big-business after he's thrown out of office at the next election.

Corrupt scum.

All I would like to add to this is that whilst she may feel that she lives 'on the poverty line', and c_dug also feels the same, may I point out that their standards of living are WAY above that of the average human being.

Whilst I agree that the Labour government of the UK has created a shedload of wasteful spending and excessive borrowing in their term in power, and that some of the practices of MPs are abhorrent, I would like to point out that billions of people in the world are without any real healthcare provision, extremely limited education, no 'welfare state', no running water/sewerage system, no pensions, no flat screen TV's, no bikes, no cars, no three bed semi in Burseldon with a well trimmed lawn.

I personally find it incredibly hypocritical when people say they are very hard done by, and that they deserve to be helped etc etc, when they do nothing themselves to help their fellow man.

I don't help my fellow man, but I also don't complain about my financial position or living standards.

Ultimately, we are very, very lucky to have been born into a privelidged position, yet all many of us seem to be interested in is gorging ourselves at the trough of western wealth. Wink

What you have to remember is all things are relative. Once born into a modern industrialised society, as ours is, one becomes used to certain things as normal and the bar is higher. That doesn't mean that one can't, or shouldn't, appreciate that one's belly is never empty, but it does mean that once simple survival is transcended one's needs become somewhat more sophisticated. The focus of one's purpose is shifted and the means of mental stimulation are different.

So take a starving african and put him in a council house in the UK, with £50 a week to spend on food and a TV in the corner, he'd think himself in nirvana. But take an englishman and put him into africa and have him doing nothing all day but grub for water and food, he'd think he'd gone to hell.

Now put the englishman in the council house. Sure, he'd be glad of the food and entertainment. But without the need to grub for water and food all day, and heartily sick of the pap on the box, he'd soon be looking for something new with which to stimulate his mind. But oh! No ready cash! Only enough to maintain the norm.

The norm doesn't quite make the nut, does it. One needs more. So don't imagine that 13 million people aren't living in their own particular brand of hell on earth. In relative physical comfort, yes. But mentally? Deprived of all novelty and stimulation? Don't discount that experience so readily with trite comparisons with those starving in africa. All human experience is relative.

I agree that she, and others are having a relatively hard time, but that was not the point I was making.

The point I was making is that you can criticise those in the UK who live 'excessive' lifestyles when others are in poverty, but yet don't see the similarity between that excess and the relative excess of your (and my) existance when compared with the majority of humanity. Why is that not morally indefensible? Why aren't you and I scum of the highest order?

Because we are not 'on the top'. Hence we may be scum, but certainly not of the highest order.
