Cigarette Packet rantings

I know this topic boils a lot of people's piss but I thought it necessary to bring it up again (for no good reason really, just that I was a bit confused). Found a packet of cigarettes in the Union last night and saw one of the new warning stickers on it. I stopped smoking a few years back, so I saw the transition from the small health warnings to the massive black and white stickers. I think by this stage in life, people know smoking is bad for you. That's a given. However, at least the black and white ones make sense! Stuff like 'Smoking seriously harms you and others around you' is fair enough - it does. However what really got me was the new, more graphic ones on the back. I see what they are trying to do, but they don't even have real solid scientific backing behind the gorey picures! Take the pic below as an example;

From right to left they get more stupid!
Far Right; Yeah, it does indeed clog the arteries, but what is shown is some open heart surgery - not clogged arteries!

Middle one; Okay, it can cause a slow and painful death, but this pic obviously shows someone who has had a tumour resected from their neck. If the pic said 'Smoking can cause painful tumours of the head and neck' then I wouldn't have so much of a problem with it.

and finally the one on the Far Left; Again it correctly identifies that smoking does indeed contain harmful chemicals but what it fails to mention is that the picture of the mouth is shows someone who is most probably on methadone! You would have to be severely compramised before smoking alone could do that to your mouth! If they had said, 'Smoking can increase your risk of periodontal problems', or 'Smoking can cause staining of your teeth and restorations' or 'Smoking can reduce your saliva flow and increase your risk of dental decay' and shown a picture related to one of these facts. The picture there shows someone who has massively neglected their mouth - it wasn't CAUSED by smoking. Smoking may have played a part, but it may aswell say 'If you smoke you are a dirty, filthy individual' because that's what they've tried to achieve!

Sorry to pour pertol on the already raging fire of the smokers' rights brigade, but that is just not on in my book!

I quite agree. That person may be a smoker, but having teeth that bad has exactly sweet FA to do with smoking.

Then there's the 'droopy' fag one that's supposed to imply that smoking causes impotence. Pah, tell that to me when I've got a raging hard on!

I don't smoke, never have done, never will, I don't like being around smokers when they smoke, don't like the smell on clothes etc, but those pictures are offensive, even as a none smoker I think they are too extreme. They would put me off doing anything if I saw them, in fact I was just going to turn off the pc when I saw them.

I used to smoke, off them a god while now and have managed not to kill anyone yet. I went cold turkey, anyway thats not the point I am about to rant about also.

I seen them stupid warnings and I know smoking was dangerous but to be honest have never seen anyone have what them pictures where showing on the packets. Bit over the top Never turned me off smoking either, I done it for my son. I dont rant at people who smoke either. I hate them types. Its your body do whatever you will to it.

I am still waiting to feel better from giving up though. All I feel is strangly calmer and cannot stop eating!

i've smoked for nigh on 16 years,

teeth are fine, wierd what brushing em twice a day can accomplish.
impotence pah, have to keep it strapped to me leg!
low jizz count double pah, 2 healthy kids proves that wrong,
bad breath, see brushing of teeth.
clogged arteries, most probably but i also eat fried food which surely is just as responsible.
but in the same (not smelling like stale fag smoke, cos i brush my teeth twice daily) breath, i am also physically fit, probably not as fit as i should be but can easily hold me own in any rumbles at work and can also keep up a fair pace on the treadmill or out for a jog. smoking is bad for you no arguments but its also a personal choice. and beside s which all the cool kids smoke.

right i'm off for a ciggie!!!!!
