They were only doing their job. The sheep deserve to ripped off. They only found it by mistake as they were looking for innocent people having a spliff. Rolling Eyes

ACTUALLY ... I think it serves those people right.
Greed propels them to respond to those things.
Greed and stupidity.

Several times I have discouraged idiot types from responding to those sorts of letters. You want to shout at them "But NOBODY gives away free money!! Did you buy a lottery ticket to that lottery? No, you bought one to the national lottery, not to some obscure lottery!!"

Surprising the number of people who try and convince you (and themselves) that the 50p raffle ticket they bought at the church fete/tripe-eaters social event/rugby club/street party MIGHT be the reason why they've received this letter Rolling Eyes

Dolts.

You'd think the police have better things to do with their time than catch people just making an honest living out of parting fools from their money.

This was discussed on Breakfast telly this morning and there was a chap whose mother has been scammed for years and had lost thousands. She was 90+ and he described her as silly, she was promptly defended by the Police representative who was trying to explain that the majority of the people targeted are very 'vulnerable' not silly. What I hadn't realised is that once they have sent money or responded these individuals are absolutely bombarded with more and more scams some including free gifts to keep them on board. Shocked

Yeah this was discussed on Jeremy Vines slot on Radio 2 today, some women phoned in about her dad being conned out of £86,000 within 10 months.

Im not so sure about this "Vunerable" lark. Being old doesn't automatically make you a retard and lose all common sense, even if someone did have dementia it's curious how they are able to read/respond to these letters, and bounce money around left to right whilst not clueing that something is amiss....

Exactly.

So if he didn't mention it to the daughter - and she didn't say "Dad! Are you crazy? Don't send them ANY money!", then he must have chosen to send it himself.*

Anybody feeling "vulnerable" would have been likely to have asked somebody else "Is this the right thing to do?" God knows enough ditzy types have asked me the same thing over the years :

"Jen, you've got a good brain and can understand 'small print' ... can you look at this letter please, only ... I think I might have won some money..." they say meekly and hope that I'm gonna say "Whoooppeee, its the big one, luv."

But no. I never do.

I disagree with old = vulnerable mentality (apart from physically, obviously). I can't see myself being any less likely to part with cash the older I get, in fact quite the reverse. Unless someone caves my head in for it, I won't be shelling out for "lottery wins" or unfeasible things.

If you get beyond 30 years old and still think there is such a thing as a free lunch, then you're definitely one sandwich short of a picnic.

Vulnerability in this case only relates to the mentally infirm, those who are physiologically insufficient in mental processes (as opposed to plain good old-fashioned common sense).

*Of course, there is the possibility that the daughter's a stupid greedy sucker as well, who encourages her father to go ahead with it. But for now, let's be charitable and say she's not.

I think it's the definition/use of the word vulnerability that is in question.

From the telly the implication was that this old lady was 'naive' and didn't think that anyone would lie and be deceitful enough to fleece her out of money, rather than she'd gone gaga! Laughing

More to do with a generation of trusting individuals, as well as those that have various mental impairments.

OK fair enough, I'm occasionally prone to bouts of naiveté myself, and understand that of an older gentler generation.

But still! Come on, Nan...! If you didn't *enter* the fancy competition with a £20million prize, how could you have won it from a 50p raffle ticket for a bottle of sherry down at the knitting club? Rolling Eyes

I missed that.
Musta been out in the posh shops at Chelsea Farmers Market, considering paying £290 for a palm tree that would probably die in about ten minutes in this climate, and finally "only" shelling out £4 for a stupid catnip mouse that Mingles won't even CONTEMPLATE amusing himself with. Gah!
