Riding to work this morning I managed to overtake an unmarked police car at quite a coniderable speed, he pulled up along side me at said speed the cop in the passengers seat mouthed "slow down" at me and gave me the thumb down. Shitting myself I slowed to 70 as did he, he then gave me the thumbs up and drove off!!
Much better than being given a speeding ticket!
But on the otherside of the coin come the squaddies. Under my overalls at work I tend to wear army issue combats, mainly because they are cheap and easy to clean.
At the services I was sat munching my lunch sat in my combats when 4 squaddies (obviously recently back from iraq) approached me.
"you shouldnt be wearing our fugging uniform if you aint in the army" Said the firts knuckle dragger.
I explained to him why I wear them and that im not pretending to be in the army. He spat at my feet and walked off swearing.
Good advert for the armed forces he was.
I didnt realise how strongly they felt about it, still isnt going to stop me wearing them tho!

I won't usually approach and offend quite so blatantly (or on such a tenuous premise), but I'll freely admit to having taken the piss mercilessly out of military fanbois dressed head to foot in DPM whilst wandering around clubs and city centres.

Some lads do feel very strongly, after all the uniform is a sign of cohesion. They've done their training and bleeding in it, seeing someone walking around looking the part when the closest they've been to a live weapon is the boxed set of dads army and a collection of "Soldier of Fortune" mags can really grate.

Not saying he was right, just trying to give an idea of what's passing for thought.

Thats absolutely shocking! Im sure they dont represent the majority though Confused

Probably the knuckle dragging single brain celled school drop out minority with no other option but to join up for the cash and tarnish the armed forces with their attitude.

While we are at it, dont be wearing football tops (you're not a footballer), dont be wearing coveralls (you're not a mechanic) don't wear wellies (you're not a fuggin farmer either), don't even think about wearing black trousers and a white shirt (you aint no copper) Laughing

Nobheads eh! Rolling Eyes

That’s what happens when you get paid 16K a year to go to Iraq! People working in Co-op earn more then them.....

I appreciate being in the forces can be traumatising, but what do they think is going to happen when they signed on?

Just sounds like you had an encounter with a proper twat, probably had that shitty attitude before he joined up, and if he didn’t, well he should have got a job in the Co-op!

Lol;

They're often seen bringing their own webbing, paintballs and pathetic smoke grenades. They're friends with everyone there but have no friends of their own. See airsoft.

Fuck me was there one of them the other day. Bandana, vest top and bellowed commands we promptly ignored (or were obvious).

As for the army, I lost all respect for them for several reasons;

A) OTC try outs where they only took the women
B) Their slogan 'No qualifications? No problem!'
C) I've met the cannon fodder regularly and a conversation with most of them is like have your teeth pulled.

It's a basic human territorial thing, it occurs in almost all walks of life.

We even see threads on here regularly about people who grind their knee sliders on a bench grinder or have full race gear and chicken strips, we all in some form have badges that we feel are "earned" and resent/denigrate those who we feel don't have the right to display them. Exactly the same in this case as well, he was just a tad more confrontational than the average bloke at a bike meet winding up a one-piece wearing Rossi rep who's wobbled in on an R1 with rim tape and decal kit whilst sporting pristine sliders.

Its more a case of they want to kill people, but they want to feel like good guys when doing it. Thats what the army can give you. The thrill of killing people, without the remorse, as you are told that you are doing something that needs to be done.

Personally, I think killing someone because your prime minister told you to, is not that different from killing someone because your mate told you to.

The whole point of the army, is you kill who you are told to kill. These days, they don't shoot soldiers who refuse to fight, so I guess you do have a choice, but herd mentality steps in for most people.

I think its only afterwards that people start to think about what they have done, and then comes the alcoholism and suicides.

I wouldn't have given such a knobhead the benefit of an explanation. Next time just tell him to fuck off. They are fucking clothes. I wouldn't count combats as proper uniform anyway.

If you were parading around in number 2 dress complete with cap badge and stable belt, I could possibly understand a bit of resentment because such things, at least until recent "reorganisation" carried hundreds of years of tradition along with them. Combat fatigues are hardly unique to a unit.

Given their extensive defenition of WALT, I find it odd that ARRSEpedia does not appear to contain another acronym in common useage with which describes the person in question in the OP.

That is:

Man you don't want to get up close and watch the light leave their eyes as they gasp for air.

*hhnnngghhh*

I'm getting hard just thinking about it.

I can still hop in the USMC if I give them my signature but the UK looks like more fun at the moment.

You weren't wearing a uniform though you were wearing trousers with a DPM pattern.

For it to be uniform it would need to have an insignia and a cap/beret.

Where would it end? I have a couple of pairs of army issue boots from my days in the cadets I still wear, is that bad?

Well, I was quite taken aback by what happened to you..

Firstly, were they wearing desert combat clothing when they spoke to you? Or what makes you think they had recently returned from the sand pit?

There is no excuse for how they spoke to you, and im not the greatest fan of army soldiers at the best of times. Spitting on a civvy would have got the aforementioned squaddies some serious punishment had they been caught...

However,

some people are very attatched to the uniform, and we do get annoyed when we see people parading around in it like a fashion accessory. Quite often you see student types wearing number one jackets complete with ribbons for a night on the lash, which i do think is blatent disrespect.

I remember a few months back when i came back from Iraq (RAF) and seeing some lad wearing a desert DPM shirt with the collar flicked up in a pub. I was really annoyed at this lad, especially as I was thinking that fairly recently, good lads had died wearing that kit.

However my proffesional attitude meant that I didnt see the need to spit on him, or approach him at all. Now I wouldnt bat an eyelid...

MEH, some of us are bothered by it, some aren't...
