What's the official lowdown on when it is acceptable to use HP/Brown sauce over ketchup? ... its been concerning me for a while ... Thinking

I tend to have tomato on say chips but brown on say bacon butty ...

Are there any hard and fast rules in sauce application I should be adhering too!?!?

When do you think it is ok to go brown?? {fnar fnar} Laughing

For me, I'd say ketchup for burgers, brown for chips, bacon, and fried eggs.

Also, to give ketchup a bit of zing, try putting some ground dried chillis in the ketchup bottle with the ketchup and giving it a good shake. You could probably use chilli powder, just not quite as good.

Cant believe I am replying in one of your threads Rolling Eyes

God I must be bored.

Red for chips & fried eggs.

Brown for everything else.

However, if the chips are served with red meat you must revert to brown.

and BTW if this thread is a lame ass attempt at double entendres it is obvious and done to death, so you are getting a straight reply Razz

If it's got egg with it, then brown. So egg and bacon sandwich, cheese omlette, full english breakfast - brown sauce. If it's got chips with it, red. So fish and chips, chip butty, sausage chips and beans - red. If you have both egg and chips on the same plate, you may choose either.

However, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce are always welcome, as is English mustard.

I think sausages are a bit of a quandary ... they go with brown OR red ...

So is it then down to what you are having with the sausage? ... what if you have a meat platter and you have some chicken, some pork, some beef and some lamb on the same plate???

What do you do?!!?! Shocked ... is it then acceptable to have different sauce in different areas of the plate Thinking

I need to know the rules for the next time I am at a very posh restaurant with highfalutin company... I mean I don't want to look uncouth by applying the wrong sauce!! Very Happy

Assuming there's both egg and chips with the platter (would be silly not to, unless you're gay, when it's ok to have salad and jacket potato) then you can have either, but you must have mustard on the pork and sausages, horseradish on the beef and mint on the lamb.

Brown sauce on pretty much everything (stirred into your stew is lovely). Red for hotdogs and burgers. Although I can never decide with a fry up. Thumbs Up
