Although often asked I seriously want to know people's opinions for a tent.

The task at hand is a big ride out across Russia from the low mountains of Turkey and Georgia ,the desert and steppe of Kazakhstan , to the Mountains , rocky desert and grassy steppe of Mongolia to the swampy rocky bits of Russia.

It has to be light cheap, pack very small and be double skinned hardened tent pegs and an axe hammer thing will be bought to drive pegs in if needed.

Tents that have caught my eye are:

Pro Action Hike Lite 1 Person Tent

Gelert single hoop kebab tent

Anybody suggest any other and or the advantages / disadvantages of the above? , there is no room for a pop tent so those won't work.

Ideal but far too expensive tent

Any thoughts

Oh and a certain Mr Coy , isn't bringing a tent and thus when he is freezing his balls off on the steppe there may well be a need for him to share it.

Thanks.

https://www.outdoormegastore.co.uk/acatalog/Vango_Banshee_200_Mountain_Tent.html

I have and use this one.

It packs down small, smaller than a rolled up roll mat.

It's easy to put up, you put the poles into their sockets, and then tighten the straps at the bottom by pulling and it's up.

The top cover just clips in to the bottom...difficult to explain, but so easy to put up.

It won't be particularly warm, and theres not a huge amount of space, but I'd reccomend it.

Gelert one won't be robust enough. They are built to a price. (I have one). Lightweight summer camping only.

There are other versions of the "kebab" theme which are considerably more robust but they are very expensive (eg, Hilliberg Akto, Black diamond).

You are looking too cheap. I'd budget on spending £150-£200 minimum on a tent for what you are doing or you are asking for trouble.

Check out Lightwave tents

They are designed by a materials engineer. I've spoken to him at an open day, he is very enthusiastic about his product and knows what he is on about. If you want advice from him, ask, he is happy to customise stuff too (eg, ultra lightweight flysheet combined with extra strong poles for someone doing an arctic adventure race).

The G1 ultra will do everything you want but they are very expensive. A T0 trek is about £200 and you'll struggle to find anything smaller and lighter (1.6kg, 50x13cm pack).

My suggestion. Club together, get a slightly bigger, more expensive tent and carry it between you.

They do a "lite" version of the spirit 200 which doesn't have the big porch for a fair bit less (around £100 if you shop around).

Maybe even try for a second hand, higher end tent off ebay, re-proof it and repair any damage?

Bargain! This is a £400 tent.

So ok change of spec what up to £150 tent for such a trek would anybody recommend.

Blimey these things are expensive (but I just sold some junk so I can adjust the £££ up a bit).

Actually the Argos one was recommended by a HUBBer who did a similar trip but via the Ukraine instead of Turkey.

Quick search on ebay:

Spec seems amazing This type will also stand up unpegged. Never heard of the make though and it seems suspiciously cheap for the specification.

There is also an old Mk4 Vango force 10
They weigh a fucking ton (rigid steel A-frame, canvas flysheet) and take up loads of room but they are very quick to errect and will stand up to anything short of being nuked from space. It'll need new elastics and re-waterproofing.

I saw those. They are "emergency" tents with a nylon flysheet and two, vertical poles. They are called a "force 10 vitesse". Not made by vango you will notice!

They won't stand up unless well pegged out. A proper force 10 will pretty much stand up by itself. The pegs just keep the flysheet off the inner.

Confused , tricky wording they have on ebay ,

I think I have a winner though (a local shop stocks that Aztec Esquina Plus tent thing I'll have a look).

I think a current winner is

either a

Vango Spirit 200+ (ie the ideal but too expensive tent in my OP) which I can get for a flat £180

Or the

Vango Spirit 200 lite , which is half a kilo lighter and packs smaller.

Meh if that lightwave tent wasn't bright blue I'd probably take that one, but we are camping wild everywhere and thus don't want to attract attemption with it.

I wonder if I can get Nath to bring a sidecar Razz

Dont bother with a cheap tent, it will fall apart in a few weeks

You need some in the £100-200 range

I live out of one of theses for a month last year, well made/roomy/light/packs small (ultra light version even more) also the bug net works great and kept out the hordes of Finish/Russian mosquitoes.

Aztec Esquina Plus tent - I picked up one of these on ebay for £60, my plan is to take it around europe. The tent is very quick to erect. It's light and packs down very small. Aliminium poles and a 5000 hydrostatic head. Perfect for the job.

The thing to watch with the cheap argos one is that they are quite heavy for what they are. You can get a 3-4 man Gelert one for the price of a 2 man argos one.

I bought a Gelert Eigar one last year, tested it for 2 weeks last year and seems a good tent and quite roomy without being bulky once packed.

I have an Aztec sleeping bag and 'Camel back' - seem to be decent kit at a decent price.
I still reckon I'd go for a pop-up tent. I spent a total of around a month in mine last year (though only two weeks concurrently) and am still happy with it. Does weigh a bit more and is a bit bigger (around 2.5kg and 63cm disc for the smaller ones) but it's so nice just to chuck it out, chuck your stuff in and climb in. Pretty small porch area though, but enough to keep boots etc.

I have the pro action hike. I've only used it a couple of times. Had no qualms, but for motorcycling it could be an issue if my gear were to get completely soaked as there's nowhere for it.

I'm happy with it until I can get the funds to afford something bigger.

I suppose the question is "How much shit am I in if my tent collapses round my ears?"

Is it something to keep you comfortable at night or is it a piece of survival equipment?

If the former, get a cheap one. If the latter, don't get anything less than a 4-season rated tent, don't get anything with a hydrostatic head of less than 3000mm and don't get anything with fibreglass poles. For pitching on hard, rocky surfaces, a geodesic or semi-geodesic design would be an advantage.

I've never been but I was always under the impression that the Mongolian desert gets very cold at night and is prone to sudden extremes of weather due to its altitude. Of course, this is something you would need to research.

Yes I know this I was close to pressing the buy button on a vango Spirit 200+ tent I found after much searching for £160, but then noticed it was a 3 season tent and thus not much use.

But hey no need to tell me anymore speak to Nath as said he ain't bringing a tent.

While we're talking tents.....who has a Kyham Biker?

How small does it pack down? Is it easy to acutally get back into it's pack?

How do you rate it?

Sorry for the semi-hijack.
