Exhausts and end cans

Covered the end up of my exhaust and it turns out that it leaks/blows.

It is a carbon micron can on stainless steal headers on a zxr750.

Being carbon i'm not sure there is much i can do to fix it so am looking for another slip on can for the mot.

Can i use any slip on can that fits or do i have to use ones specific to my model bike?

Any can will work, as long as it fits. You might have to adjust the fuelling like with any aftermarket exhaust, and the bike will probably loose some power if the can is not designed specifically for it... It'll be fine for an mot though.

Shouldn't really lose much if any power with most end cans as long as you're replacing like for like ie straight through with a straight through.

End cans are mostly to satisfy noise requirements and athestical reasons. On a similar note just make sure it's road legal if it's for the MOT.

sorry, never learned much about exhuast in 4t bikes. Whats the difference in straight through and not straight through. I presume they both have baffels?

No I think the modern road legal after market cans have this removalable baffle stuff. (Excuse my ignorance never had the experience with a 'new' exhaust.)

But some of the old skool road pipes didn't.
I may be wrong. Question

Where was it leaking from?

The main thing to check for is the diameter of the end can where it meets the rest of the system. Just put a smear of exhaust paste on there to help it seal when you fit the new can. For the MOT just buy any old thing that fits and doesn't leak. Won't hurt for the few miles there and back.

A straight through pipe doesn't have a baffle, has no restrictions, and doesn't alter the flow of gas.

To quieten down an exhaust you have a baffle, loads of different designs. The basic version disrupts the flow of gas before it leaves the can.

Pretty much. Most OEM exhausts are sealed with an extensive sytem of baffle plates and packing material to significantly reduce or tune the noise.

Aftermarket stuff is very hit and miss. Some come with baffles and packing material. Some with just a bolt in baffle and the rest with nothing at all.

ok well my exhuast has three screws at the end. I removed these. There is a long reasonably wide perforated pipe wrapped with baffel material. This piple is the length of the end can and is consistant in diameter.

The exhaust is leaking (not noticably unless you cover the end) from a crack in the carbon about 1/4 or the way up from its base.

I guess something like this would be fine to replace it:

would love to, but its the end with the connector to the down pipes that is broken.

If i stubby it how would i connect the good end to the metal bit that joins the downpipes?

Also would the bike need re-jetting for this?

How would this affect the sound?
