Managed a few hours fishing for Pike on the local canal this afternoon.

I'd caught nothing, and was on the verge of packing up, when suddenly the head of a pike appeared a few inches behind my lure, followed it for a few feet, then turned tail and swam off.

I cast out again in the direction it had gone, lo and behold i could see it follow my lure in again (the joy of polaroid sunglasses).
It came within 3 foot of the bank, all the time the excitement was building within me.

I gave the rod tip a twitch, and this provoked the pike to rush forward and engulf my lure. Like an overexcited schoolboy i eagerly struck into it - only to somehow pull the lure from between the closing jaws of the fish.

The lure landed with a plop in the water at my feet. I was livid with rage and frustration - i'd been fishing for hours, the only fish i'd seen i'd managed to fuck up.

I managed to stop myself from throwing my rod in the water, and instead i stamped my foot and snarled out 'Oh your FUCKING MOTHER!!!'

At that point i became aware of that itch you get between the shoulders when someone is stood behind you and watching you.

I turned around to discover a small, angelic looking blonde haired boy of about 7 who had witnessed the entire spectacle of my snarling rage and blasphemy.

I've lost a couple of snappers on deadbait because the hooks weren't set....tension on the rod, feel weight of fish..all good...then bait pulls out it's mouth. My boss (who I usually fish with) had the same fish within sight of the landing net twice in a session (the second time it ate the dead while it was being reeled in!) and the bait pulled out for no apparent reason. Needless to say it was tears before bedtime - rod slung in reeds etc

Generally speaking, it's very rare when lure fishing not to have the hooks set properly. I've only had a few fish manage to spit the lure out, these were all from takes on the surface.
With the incident in question, if i'd waited a split second more till the fish had actually closed its mouth, i'm sure it would have been business as usual.
Instead, i was as nervous and premature as a schoolboy getting his first bit of tit.

When spinning I tend to hit most things bar the odd dumb fish that takes it right under the rod tip (my fault for not expecting it). It's a right buzz but casting repeatedly for long periods hurts my back so I usually only spin to break the boredom / keep warm when winter piking. I've solved the deadbait issue by scaling up the terminal tackle and giving the bite a few seconds to develop properly (I'm nowhere near deep hooking them doing this) although strictly speaking this makes my traces "illegal" on the waters I fish (supposed to be no bigger than size 8 trebles - WTF??????).

The only time I went fishing I was amongst several more long term fishermen and on casting out the last section of my rod decided it wanted to try flying. Cue a huge splash in the middle of the river scaring all the fish away and a very embarrassed me reeling my line back in, rod section attached.

I quietly packed up and went home never to fish again...

Had that kind of shit happen when out shooting for wabbits. All of a sudden you seem to develop Bowers pork sausages for fingers and a scope eye that doesn't work.
