Do you cook differently when camping?

So when your camping, do you just get the good old frying pan out, or do something a little different.

One of my favorites is to get the 2 plates from my cheapy tesco cooking set, found here.

And put them alterately in the big pot, so they make a raised platform, then fill it with water about half way up the top plate, fill it with all the good grub, like sausages, meat balls, fish, veg. Then pop the lid on and let it all steam until the water is all gone. Then you take the lid off and enjoy.

On a more sensible note.

I try to use as few pot/pans and other bits as nessecary.

Rice and pasta are good for camping as they dont take long to cook and are easy to store. I usually take a few boil in the bag meals, just in case but prefer not to use them.

Boil in the can. No need to pierce the can providing it doesn't boil dry.

I sometimes take my Jaffle iron and have tosties and square fried eggs. You can put most things in a toastie.

Whilst I can cook, when I go camping/rallying with the lads we give all the stuff to one of the bloke that's with us and he cooks for us, he's a fantastic cook...

He has no choice or say in the matter though...

I generally take food items that don't need cooking, and I am known for wandering around with carrots and humous at rally sites.

I sometimes take bacon with me, then wander around asking if anyone can cook it for me, and I take a mug and tea bags and beg for hot water.

BUT, this year it will change. I asked for a camping stove for Xmas and got one!!!! I just need some tiny cooking pots and some gas and I'm well away!!!

When abroad I just picked something up from the shops on a day to day basis for that night, unfortunately on the continent tinned beans and sausages or anything else along those lines taste worse than tesco's value stuff (something I didn't think was possible).

If there's two of you cooking then spaghetti bolognese is good, one does the quick cook spaghetti, the other the bolognese, and then swap half with each other when done and eat, same goes for rice and curry, I'll only be taking two mess tins when I go again by myself, pots and pans are just too bulky and unnecessary. If you can't be bothered to cook one night then go find takeaway or restaurant, easy.

I actually eat better when camping than when at home. I have been known to do a full cooked breakfast, sausage, bacon, eggs, fried bread etc and pork chops, sauté potatoes with fried tomatoes for tea, all on a single burner & 2 pans lol

well after spending 4 days camping out at brands hatch this weekend and running out of gas on the last night that morning breakfast was cooked using a makeshift grill consisting of about 30 tee lights and a rack fashioned out of the top of a disposable bbq.

ok so it took over an hour to boil the water for a brew and cook some bacon but hey.. it worked

if id have gotten up earlier i woulda just got some wood and built a proper fire but my m8s other half had set it up and she seemed so proud of herself i didnt wanna interupt (and i dont eat bacon anyway so i was quite safe )

Didn't somebody once manage to cook a fray bentos pie on a coleman stove?.

In that Fray bentos pies seem more space efficient than ramen which I am considering bringing as backup food incase we are stuck in the back and beyond.

Problem with army rations is they're so expensive, used to like them when I was living on them for a few days at a time in Cadets, all the menus were pretty good and the snacks. I've yet to find anywhere selling them under about £10 which is daft, can buy a meal out for that easily.

If you have got to take freeze dried stuff take stuff from "Expedition Foods." (I have tried a lot of different brands and these win hands down). I always take a couple of these when walking. The Korma and the Apple and Custard are brilliant. Good to have in your bag if you are stuck/can't be arsed.

Expedition foods is even worse £15 for army ration packs, as said I'd rather pay £8 to get a 24 box of 2 minute ramen or 4-5 Fray bentos pies for a couple of those things!.

What about cooking up fresh seasonal "road kill"?

Dunno about fancy ration packs, camp cooking sets etc.
Just get yourself down to your local tesco/asda/sainsbury`s.
Pick up some cheap pots/pans and 1 of stinkwheels 1ltr+ tea/coffee pots, and a set of knives/forks for £5-£10 and you`ve got the basic kit for cooking food for several rallies, Buy own brand tinned spagbo, curry... rice & pasta for a couple of quid, and you have the basis of the main meals for a weekend away
