Practicing, no license.

Only a matter of time til this came up! My CB5 is sitting in the garage itching to be ridden, but there's 3 months til I can do my test.

Unfortunately my drive isn't really big enough to ride on, (except clutching it up into the garage), but there's a village hall about half a mile down the road from me (involving a main-ish road), which I reckon would be good for practice...

What do people think about me riding down there and just practicing in 1st/2nd gear around the car park? What will the consequences be if the police come along and happen to ask questions? (bearing in mind the bike isn't restricted yet although this is somewhat irrelevant considering I'm only on a provisional license now)

It's not worth the risk of getting caught.

If you are caught you are riding without a licence and without insurance. The best you could hope for is 6 points, and a hell of a time getting affordable insurance once you do pass. If they think you are likely to do it again (and by knowingly riding illegally once, you would have shown intent) you may get banned. They do this to discourage people, cos riding whilst banned carries a possible prison sentence.

Edit: By the way, it's now illegal for you to practice in the village hall car park as well. Used to only need licence, insurance etc on public roads, but this has now been extended to "Publicly accessible land" which includes car parks etc.

What a stupid thing to think of doing... If anything at least get a mate or find someone who has a licence to legally ride your bike, take you down to a car park and then you could have a spin. If you have an accident on a main road you'll be buggered for a very long time.

I was in a similar position..except i had to wait 2yrs before i could ride mine. In the end i stored it elsewhere cos it was too tempting.

I wouldn't risk of messing up my future license.

3months is nothing, eventho it might seem like a long time. Just get your mind off of it, or spend the next few months to make sure everything's in a good condition on it.

I've my next bike sitting in the garden back home and tho iit's tempting to take it out for a spin, I know I'd be gutted if I got caught while riding iit. For me it just doesn't worth the risk.
Instead I'm spending my time, untill I get my full license sorted out, to fix a few things on it and make some additions.

But after all, it's your call, just know the possible consequences.

I wouldnt risk it like has been said. If you do get caught you will have an expensive few years of hiked insurance prices plus depending on what the police / courts do, it may effect getting certain jobs as well.

For it to be legali believe the area has to be closed off to the public.
So if you can find an industrial unit, get permission to store the bike there and ride it on their land, then go for it.
For 3 months, nar, just wait

All it takes is for an ANPR camera car to tag you on the way there or back.
Plus someone in a car park on a bike, riding up and down it. If any police car goes passed they are going to ask questions. Even if they are okay with you being there they will likely wait out of sight, wait for you to leave to go home and then pull you. As they know you dont have a license, or insurance

You are likely to get reported by the general public as well as it does look dodgy.

Good tips, mostly things I've thought about, but good to hear it from other people. My dad has said he'd take me down to a car park on the back at some point so I could have a practice. I would be able to walk it but as the public has access to the car park I could still get done for riding in there, besides as deanoet said, it would look dodgy to anyone watching.

Guess I'll wait and get everything sorted for when I can ride it!

All good advice tbh, i really wouldnt bother..i know its a long time, hell i had to wait 2 weeks to pick up my gsxr and it felt like a few years, but its well worth the wait buddy

The village hall car park is still kind of classed as a public place because the public has access to it so even riding your bike in there could get you in trouble. I don't think anyone has also mentioned that if you were to get caught, because you have no licence and/or no insurance, the police will seize your bike too under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act. Not only will you end up in court for commiting the offences but you will also have to pay recovery and storage to get your bike back.

You get nabbed then your looking at a ban points a fine plus the vehicle WILL be confiscated which is £125 plus £20 every day. If its left in the pound for more than 7 days then it is destroyed The police will no go easy on you

Then you will get huge insurance quotes on you bike and a car if you deceide to get one.

Plus if you come off and smash the bike into someone or something you have no insurance to claim off and neither do they.

You may think your a great rider but its suprising how fast a bike can run away from you if you slip up.

No question about me being a great rider! I'm only riding a moped at the moment- this is why I want to practice!

I completely get how fast a bike can get away from you, I can feel when I'm riding up the drive that it just wants to go, and I can tell that one too many things to concentrate on = mistake + mess.

I was mainly focusing on the riding around the car park bit, as I could get to it without using roads if I need to, but I had read the thing about public access = public place so knew I wasn't allowed to practice anyway, just didn't realise how massive the consequences were. Have decided not to ride it on my own but if my dad comes down and takes me to an industrial estate car park or something i might have a quick go.

We all know how you feel just resist the temptation and take a few lessons on a hired bike when your 17 that way you can learn without the risk of trashing your own bike.

It really is the worst feeling when you see your bike smashed on the floor similar to being kicked in the balls.


if you really wanna get on the road that much for some practice go on auto trader and get a cheap 50cc ped and your cbt and go get some experience on the road
Your going to need the CBT anyway to do your lessons and test and while your waiting practice the theory religiously you would be suprised how many people fail it on silly questions they should know.

You at least should get back what you paid for the ped when your done.

Got a ped already, riding since last July, doubt I'll be getting back what I paid for it though as I was mugged off for £1100 back when I didn't really know what I was looking for, now I've got 10 times the bike for £300 less and I can't even ride it. Priorities wrong anyone? haha

phone round bike schools and ask for cancellations, i got one for the next day (last wednesday)

and no don't be stupid, it only takes 1 car driver to not see you then boom your off, bikes totalled your licence gets taken away before you get it and you could be looking at a hefty fine/community service.

Not a very clever idea...... 3 months is not very long compared to how long a driving ban would be if you got nicked!

Do you know anybody with a lot of land/any storage etc? If you could move it (in a van or something) to private land then go for it and practise there, but I wouldn't risk anywhere else.

As for private land, there is very few places that qualify, and even then I doubt you would get permission.

Spoke to my dad last night and this weekend he's coming down and we're gonna go out for a ride and he said maybe we'll go to a disused airfield somewhere in the New Forest, win!

But large open space, easy to see coppers coming and get my dad to jump back on, then we're only tresspassing, they can only fuck you off for that, rather than dish out large amount of points and fines
