Just kinda getting an idea for my next motor.
I currently have this...

https://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/Killa127/Roc6.jpg

A 1988 1.6GT Scirocco.
Im loving the classic styles and at £475, it was a bargain.

Anyway, what im after next is something with more, comforts. Electrics would be nice! lol
So i've narrowed it down, i want either Jap or German made, 1.6. I dont like the small motors like a CRX or civic hatch. Id like more of a saloon, coupe type machine.
So far im quite into anything like the Toyota Levin, the Civic coupe and the Galant. The galant is maybe a little too much in the power range. I need to keep my bike you see so 1.6 is the limit really.
Any suggestions? I may even be persueded by the Germans but im struggling to find anything that isn't gonna cost me a fortune. Im looking to spend £1500 to 1800

Cheers Thumbs Up

At that sort of engine size you're not going to find a saloon worth having, only thing that comes to mind is a BMW 316i, and they're shit.

Why the restriction on engine size? It's not that big a deal for insurance, I paid about the same to insure a merc 190e 2.6 as I did on a ford escort 1.6.

Really, £1500 to £1800 will get you just about anything, as long as it's fairly common. I'd be buying a mid 90s BMW 325i with it, but that could be a bit pricey on insurance for you.

Levin as in the AE86? anything in your price range will likely be rougher than a Scunthorpe massage specialist or already on it's way to Ireland

What type of car are you wanting (2 or 4 door? rwd/fwd?, family/sporty/large/small/etc) and how old are you wanting? your scirocco is a late 80s car, are you wanting to move on to 90s cars or stick with slightly classic?

If you're thinking a two door you could try..

Nissan 180sx - earlier model to the 200sx, rwd 1.8L engines

Nissan s12 / Silvia - forerunner to the 180sx, looks like an AE86 but 1/10th of the scene tax but not common in the UK, engines from 1.6 - 2.0L

BMW 316/318i - loads of different 2door models from 1985 - 2000 depending on yhour budget.. the late 80s E30 shape was probably the prettiest and was available as a 2door:

actually..

As Robby states, engine size won't be that much of a problem for insurance purposes.. want a suggestion that is a sleek looking 2door, comfortable, fairly quick but not amazingly powerful, has a few luxurys, german, slightly rare and a little different?

how about one of these:
https://i5.ebayimg.com/05/i/001/41/a2/e6f7_12.JPG
ebay link

Sure it's a 3L NA engine, but it'll be producing ~125bhp, you're looking at ~9seconds to 60, ~120mph flat out and ~25mpg if you're sensible Very Happy

I see what you're saying about saloons etc at 1.6.
The twin cam 16-20v toyota i thought would be decent though. The reason for 1.6 capacity is mainly for MPG etc, i find my scirocco drinks a bit, im sure i dont drive badly all the time either.
That opel Monza is wicked, i love the classics...and that has all the electrics you need.
I've only been driving 6 months so when i get the next motor i will have 1 years experience.

the scirocco would be a 1.6 carb engine right? i wouldn't expect much more than 23mpg from it unless you drive like a nun Smile

you say you've been driving for 6months, does that mean your 17&1/2 years old or are you older and have only gotten your licence recently?

if your old enough (i think you need to be 21) to qualify for it, classic car insurance policies would save you money on older cars but you'd need to look into what mileage limitations you'd have

pretty much any 4 or 6 cylinder petrol car engine from the 80s or early 90s will be capable of ~24mpg when driven nicely, you'd get a couple more mpg if it's fuel injected, provided it's size is a match for the car.. scirocco size or smaller 1.6L is fine, move up to something BMW 3series size and you would do just as well with a 1.8 or 2.0L engine

if you're needing more mpg than that, you're looking at moving to a post 1995 petrol or a diesel, if economy is totally your bag (at the expense of style, street cred and being happy about being seen with your car) the most economical car you'll find on a budget is an early 90s Cavalier 1.7td (isuzu engine version)

£500 to buy, you'll get 45mpg out of them and they'll survive anything up to and including nuclear winter.. Citroen Xantias do more mpg but they have more technical things to go wrong and people actually like them so they cost more Smile

corrados had (i think) a choice of 3 engines, standard 1.8L(na), supercharged 1.8L (G60 model) and the VR6 (3L V6), the standard engine wouldn't be too bad but the others could cane you a bit for using your right foot Smile

At the age of 25 i'm pretty sure you'd be able to get classic insurance on early 80s cars, Peter Best, Adrian Flux or Herts/HIC are helpful people (my manta's insured through Herts/HIC for £150 for the year but i'm a bit older than you) just make sure to clarify what mileage limit they're looking at, 9000miles is standard, you get a discount for limiting to 5000miles and another for 2500miles limit

also, classic policies won't build up no-claims discount but some insurers/brokers do a "claim free years" discount that amounts to the same.

Manta was based on a Cav'
Loved 'em!!

But my vote goes to the Corrado. In basic 1.8 trim, it goes like glue off a gluey thing, but if thats the kinda performance/mpg you want then the basic is a good choice. Just be cafeful about choosing one, as many boy racers had this affordable model, then ragged the arse out of them 'cos they had no guts.....

my baby on one of it's incredibly rare outings:
https://www.speshul.org/random/atmacro.jpg

2.0L on fuel injection, about 24mpg combined driving Smile

i'd recommend a manta to the o/p but at the moment you'll struggle to get a good one under £1500.. they go through peaks and troughs of interest it seems

plus they're not exactly fast cars Very Happy

For that budget, you'd easily get any of the following.

Honda Civic VTi 4dr
https://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/homeforsummer/2334_3.jpg
If you can find one. This particular one sold a bit ago for £920. They're unpopular, so despite sharing the same 160bhp engine as the hatch and the coupe, are always much cheaper.

Mazda MX-3 V6
https://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/homeforsummer/mx3v6.jpg
Pushing the engine size on this one a little, as it's a 1.8. Apparently still fairly economical though, easily capable of more than 30mpg. Not too bad to insure either, judging by the times I've checked for quotes. I know someone who swears by his, had it 6 years and he's kept it while other cars came and went. Fairly easy to find and certainly within your budget. Just make sure it's had cambelt changes every 60k miles.

BMW 318ti Sport
https://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/homeforsummer/3801_27.jpg
Again, pushing the engine limit at 1.9, but again should be capable of mid-30s mpg and they don't seem too bad to insure. Fantastic to drive, I drove a '99 model recently (which cost £1500) and it's one of the nicest cars I've driven - great steering and a nice amount of power. Easily available in your budget.

I'm being tempted by a mid 80s granada at the moment, with the 3l-ish V6. That or a big engined sierra.
Or, the dream, a vauxhall viva with a V8 in it.

There was more than that, 1.8 8v, 1.8 16v, 2.0 8v, 2.0 16v, G60 & VR6. Thumbs Up

Might sound odd but I would recommend a 3dr fiat stilo Diesel 1.9 You'll a reasonable one for the money you're looking to spend with plenty of kit if you go for the dynamic variant comes with 115bhp as standard & for 300 get it remapped to 160bhp yet still return as much as 51mpg. Ok doesn't sound nice but they do look good but then I am biased. Embarassed

Ford Probe! You can get them with a 2 litre 4cyl or a 2.5 v6. Not sure what the insurance will be like but the cars are dirt cheap to buy due to the poor image. Not much of a drivers' car though, more like a big cruiser.

For some reason I really like them. Not sure why, probably due to seeing one at the motor show when I was little and thinking it looked nice Embarassed

Hi

Also consider some other coupes such as a Fiat Coupe (go for the older 16V one if you want to avoid very expensive cam belt changes).

All the best

*grins* if you get a probe you have to mod the rear end cali-drift style.. give it a foot of extra ride height at the back and some big slick Hoosier tyres, just so you could signwrite "PROBULATOR" in flame letters down the side Very Happy

another option for the £1500 could be a late model Calibra? (2 door cavalier), in the last years you could choose from 2.0L, 2.0Turbo, some with 4x4 if you like a technical challenge, or 2.5L v6

You got a touch of over-compensation for the small car Robby!!
I'd have your car over a horrific Grenadeher anyday. They were foul when they came out, and they ain't got any better!! A nice Sierra Cossy would be cool though Thumbs Up But stick to the small cars, they are always the most fun to drive. Very Happy

I've always quite liked the Probe too, but I think it'd be too embarassing to own one! Imagine having to tell someone you owned a Probe. There aren't many circles that wouldn't give you funny looks with that comment.

However, help is at hand:

Mazda MX-6 - same car, vastly less embarassing:
https://www.caralius.net/auto/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/mazda-mx-6.jpg
Only available with the V6 though.
